I read this book as a kid and it scared the beejesus out of me. I read it again recently as an adult and it was a different experience alltogether. If you arent a King fan or are, if horror is your thing or its not, here are 3 reasons why this is still a great bookk:1. Its not what you might expect. Yes, its about vampires visiting a small town and good vs Evil (capital "E"), but Salems lot is a soap opra, with vivid characters only King can create and vignettes of life in a small town that will make you feel nostalgic and disgusted at the same time. They beat their children, cheat on their husbands, drink and bully. Yet its hard to pin them on a good vs bad board, there are shades of grey with everyone you meet. This town is Anytown USA, more a charcter than a setting and you realize the evil man can do is more destructive to society than a thousand year old vampire.2. It is King at his finest - the writing, the transitions and use of the third person narrative makes the story come alive - its a slow build I admit but by the time the bodies start dropping King makes you care in a way most horror novels dont bother to. You feel for the Glicks, you root for the alcoholic priest trying to reclaim enough faith to battle the dark one and you are happy for Dud in his new life. King will do this again in the Stand and in It, but once you read SL you realize hes sampling from his earlier works and no other book will make you laugh cry and turn on the lights like this one will. The genuis of starting the book with the tall man and boy in Mexico is you kind of know whats going to happen (much like a Columbo episode where you see the murder up front), but it raises so many questions you simply have to hang on.3. Its the best kind of horror story - it follows the rules and tells classic tale. Straker and Barlow may be the villans but they arent blood thirsty monsters either - they are true to their nature. A vampire kils and a watchdog protects. In one seen where Straker does something awful, King takes the time to tell us about the look on his face which enlightens the reader about his motivation. They follow all the vampire rules - sunlight and crosses and of course the need for an invitation (in fact they were invited to the town by Marsten). They arent invincible foes but they are formidable ones. And its the townspeople that drive the action and turn SL into an apocalypse.This is a rich story full of great themes about society, the power of faith, men vs boys (my favorite chapter is the inner monologue Mark Petrie has after a close call where he muses about how adult fears are nothing compared to what a child dels with under the bed at night) and even love and salvation. Read it and decide for yourself if this is a horror novel or a novel about the horrorz of man.

Very Good!

I enjoyed Salem's Lot. Prior to this novel, I read Carrie which was my first by King. I liked this story, a writer staying in a boarding house to write a book about a haunted house from his childhood that continued to bother him even in his adulthood. A group coming together to kill these creatures infesting the town. The witty English teacher/ Dr. Van Helsing character. Parts if it made me laugh in bed while reading, others creeped me out... especially the image of these child vampires overcoming the town's crotchety bus driver after baiting him onto the bus in the middle of the night. It definitely kept me engaged and I'm looking forward to reading a few more of King's books. In the afterword, King refers to Salem's Lot as an American vampire tale... it was then I remembered thumbing through the pages one of my brother's comic books with the same title and how King contributed to the writing of it. Good read.

I tried, I really tried, but at about the midpoint of this book I started skipping so many pages I finally just succumbed to my truth and let it go.I am well aware that this a good writer, an excellent writer, and I do understand the genre of "survivor memoirs" and their ability to inspire and empower those for whom the narrative resonates. But for whatever reason, the style of the writing, with its almost breezy stripping of the writer's every thought, making each one as important and essential whether talking about yoga or alcoholism, became wearying to me. The sheer minute-by-minute-by-minute-by-minute account of the writer's marriage and the revelations that arose from it (and other revelation-inducing life events) became wearying to me as a reader. I left her sometime during the yoga section and left without knowing whether or not she and her husband ever had sex again or ever decided to give it a real go again -- and I feel sorta bad about that, as, no doubt, much went into this life and this book -- I just found the mountain of details wore me down too much to care.I'm sorry to leave this review because I applaud anyone who transcends their demons to find a new and more self-preserving life. But maybe I've read too much of this genre at this point. Maybe the revelations and epiphanies that fascinated this writer to the point of microscopic examination have already been covered in other fine books I've read. I dunno. All I know is, she lost me along the way.I wish her well, however it went, and congratulate her on both the success of her life and, is seems, this book. From what I can see it's having quite an impact and that's a good thing.

A friend suggested this book, so I downloaded a sample. I read it and it felt like every word described my childhood. My experiences on how to behave...how to display beauty and intelligence when interacting with others.I was curious about the author and started reading reviews prior to downloading reviews. Some praised her and related to her, others dropped off at passages where they felt she was too (insert adjective). Some labeled her a false prophet, some a spiritual guide.I almost didn’t read this book because of one of those labels. One that I just couldn’t identify with at all.But I read on. At times, I thought this woman is a beautiful writer. Her imagery is crisp, uniquely hers, forceful and superb. At other times I felt she was shallow or putting others in boxes as it related to her grief, her experiences, and I couldn’t relate at all. I thought about stopping. But I read on,and realized that she was baring her soul. Opening herself up to criticism and attack on many levels—as a person, a parent, a spouse, a spiritual being, a woman, a feminist, and whatever role or label the reader wanted to ascribe or judge her on.Did I relate to everything she said. Absolutely not. How could I? It’s her experience. Could I relate to some things? Absolutely.Baring your soul is brave. Allowing others to glimpse the lesson that you took from a situation is courageous. And I realized that it was not that she was a guru or guide instructing us how to be, act or feel, but relaying her experiences, how she dealt with them reacted, and re-evaluated her behavior as time passed.So I can’t judge her or find fault if I don’t relate, but I can listen learn and grow from what she has shared with me in her own personal journey. We are all on our own journey, and it is beautiful and painful for many of us. By baring her faults and foibles as well as her successes, she affords you the opportunity to take with you a message, the knowledge that as humans none of us have a perfect life or experiences. There will be good and bad. You will be challenged to find grace is devastating situations, to celebrate the successes of others when you are flailing. And when you are not flailing, when you have grace, you can walk with someone through parts of their journey.

Way too much feel good, touchy-feely psychobabble. And I’m a psychologist! I enjoyed the first half of this book and started skimming toward the end. I wish I had read more reviews before purchasing this or that I had borrowed it from the library. The idea of totally accepting yourself and being your true self is wonderful. I just did not care for the delivery.This is Glennon Doyle’s memoir about her difficult adolescence, her battle with bulimia, her substance use, and her unhealthy relationship with men and sex in college. She gets pregnant with her boyfriend and they marry. They have two more children and settle down as a family. She discovers he is into porn then he confesses to serial one night stands since they have been married. The bulk of the book is about how she sorts through her emotions and tries to make a decision about her marriage and her family. Her husband seems genuinely repentant and tries to win her back. They both go to therapy and learn that they have very different communication styles. They both work very hard on their marriage, to an almost unbelievable degree. Ms. Doyle also seeks answers through yoga and church. The title Love Warrior (which I hate!) is made a bit more palatable when you learn that it is in reference to the warrior pose in yoga. I did not realize that the author has parlayed her love warriorship into a website, blog, charity work, and speaking engagements. I probably would not have read the book if I had known.I thought that the writing was excellent and there were some sentences and paragraphs that really drive home her message. I think everyone can identify with the difficulty in figuring out who you are and being true to that. Instead, we try to blend in and be what we think other people will like. What I did not like about the later portion of the book was the author’s focus on being her authentic self. All. The. Time. With the constant introspection and questioning of her thoughts and feelings, I’m not sure how she could be real in the moment. Some of the phrases she uses are too much for me such as “I’m learning to feed my body.” Or in reference to learning to love her body “You are the ship that delivers love from the shore of another being to the shore of me.” If you like that style, you will love this book. If it makes you roll your eyes, you may want to pass.

This book impressed me. At my age I regard William Shirer's Rise and Fall of the Third Reich as the standard against which I hold most history books of that period. But The Death of Democracy xxwent into more detail about the internecine politics, the conspiracies, the backroom deals that went down in the final days of the Weimar Republic, anf an acerbic analysis of the politicians involved, with irony-laden modern style.There were three things that recurred throughout the book: the extreme and seemingly irreconcilable Party divisions, the revolt against reason, and the willingness of some people to believe anything. See any similarities? Nowadays we call this "post-factual."

It doesn’t require reading many pages of this faux-scholarship work to detect the author’s purpose. Contrary to what the author says in the introduction, his narrative does not depend on new gems emerging from historical archives. It depends rather on a deliberate attempt, disguised in mostly neutral prose, to convince the reader of the parallels between Hitler Germany and Trump America. Whatever one’s position on American politics today, such a parallel is unconvincing to anyone who has studied Hitler and the Weimar Republic in detail. The author states, for example, that one of Hitler’s purposes was to “make Germany great again.” True? Certainly. But why use those exact words? Even the title phrase, “death of democracy,” echoes the Washington Post’s ridiculous and meaningless banner, “democracy dies in darkness.” The author refuses to accept that in the end, the Weimar Republic was destroyed by the Great Depression that started on Wall Street. Absent that event, which almost overnight wrecked the German economy, the Nazi party and Hitler would have descended into obscurity. In some sense, American greed for the quick buck is the most direct cause of national socialism’s triumph.There are many fine analyses available on the rise of Hitler and the dissolution of the Weimar Republic. This book is not one of them.

Hunter College history professor Benjamin Carter Hett has given us an insightful history into the collapse of the Weimar Republic and the rise of Hitler. He understands the power of myth wherein a large portion of the German population and most notably President Paul von Hindenburg believed there was unity in August 1914 at the outbreak of World War One and deceit in November 1918 when Germany surrendered. It was the power of this myth that underlay the success of the German Right.From the outset the social democratic Weimar government was never viewed as legitimate by the German Right. Thus there was a permanent built-in opposition to the government. That was compounded by the communists in the late 1920s, following Stalin’s orders, called the social democrats “social fascists.” As a result by 1931 there was an anti-democratic majority consisting of communists and Nazis working almost in tandem to destroy democracy. Although Hett covers the communist May Day demonstration of 1929 that was put down by the Social Democrats he spends far too little time on the role the communists played in bringing down Weimar.Although the Nazis were marginalized in the 1920s, the weakness in the farm economy, the continued burden of reparations and the onset of the global depression enabled the Nazis under Hitler’s leadership to unite the right. According to Hett German politics was based upon three “confessionals”: the Protestants, the Catholics and the socialist/communist factions. With the Left divided, Hitler utilizing the myths of August and October dominated the Protestants and picked off enough Catholics to become the leading rightwing party. As a result by 1933 the Nazis, by default, had to be part of any coalition government and with their successful bullying tactics they seized power. Of course they were aided by the deflation policies of Heinrich Bruning’s Center Party coalition government. In part the deflationary policies were designed to make things worse to relieve Germany of its reparations liabilities.Hett gets many things right especially his view that the untimely death of foreign minister Gustav Stresemann in 1929 eliminated a democratic voice in Germany’s center-right. In my opinion Stresemann was the only politician who could have stopped Hitler. However Hett gets a few things wrong. First he over-emphasizes the opposition to globalization. He neglects to mention that globalization was at its apogee in 1914 and Germany was benefiting from it. He conflates globalization with reparations and the gold standard. Initially the real problem was with reparations which Hett notes were relatively mild relative to history, but that is a low bar, the burden on Germany was severe. He also mysteriously leaves out the 1922 assassination of finance minister Walter Rathenau by rightwing extremists. Rathenau had the confidence of both the British and French finance ministries and had he lived the reparations issue might have been ameliorated. Hett also gets wrong blaming the German farm crisis on the rise of U.S., Canadian and Australian wheat. That is not quite true. The true causes for the fall in farm prices was the return to market of Russian and southeastern European grain along with the mechanization of agriculture that reduced the need for forage crops. The farm issue is important because the core of Nazi supporters were the Protestant farmers.Hett ends his book with the Night of the Long Knives in 1934. Here Hitler eliminates Ernst Rohm’s S.A. and more importantly much of the remaining conservative opposition. If there is a lesson to be learned from Hett’s book, it is that conservatives are play with fire when they suck up to rightwing demagogues. Hett has written an important book. Read it.

Disappointing...I bought this on the spur of the moment for my Kindle to read with my 3 1/2 year old granddaughter I was hoping for some illustrations (which were similar to the design on the cover) to be able to discuss with her,but did not find what I expected. The flow of the text was rather limited and mundane.For me, it felt trendy, uninspired and less than engaging.

My 2-year-old loves this book! The pictures are so cute and the story is just the cutest dialogue ever. Really worthwhile to get this book for your little one!

It's just weird that the boys think the girl's can't do sports &think it's just fun to bully girl's. Not cool😑😒😞!

I purchased this for my 5 year old grandchild. Given the cover, I was surprised to see that there were no pictures whatsoever inside the book. Pretty disappointing.

This guide is so jam packed with the sidequests that there's no room for the information that's ACTUALLY needed, like the pokemon that the other trainers carry. Nor is there a Pokedex.The format takes some getting used to. Because they let you choose which event you'd like to do next, so the format is like a choose your own adventure novel. But you have to flip back and forth between pages to find out if the sidequest is worth doing at the time (It's usually not) so you're basically left trying to find the main quest by shuffling through pages more. :/It's still a DECENT guide, but not a good walkthrough, which is what I was looking for and need.They should have done the book like thisMain Quest,Backtracking (Once you get Surf you can get that item across the lake in the first town)Sidequests (Now that you've beat the Elite Four you can trade this Trainer for X Pokemon),Wifi, Trading, and the In-Betweens,Pokedex,Instead, every scrap of information is POURED onto 2 pages, leaving an overwhelming cacophonous brick wall of text. I'm still not sure if I find the guide helpful or not at this point. :/

The walkthrough is very, VERY plain. I found 5 items within an our that are not even listed on the maps AND said maps don't even tell you what item icon is what item on the map. The "Pokedex" is terrible too. BARELY any information is given on each pokemon other than the general area where they may be found. Move lists are not present as to what pokemon learns what move at what level, not even basic evolution levels are listed for any pokemon other than for ones that can't be caught, which apparently is very, very few. $20 book at best and only because it is hardback.....

As a guide, this book has everything you need! It's well organized and constructed. It's thorough and covers everything in the game. It explains everything you may have any questions on. It lists what pokemon appear where. It shows all hidden items. It explains all abilities. Not to mention it's in a beautiful hardcover and is individually numbered, being a collector's edition and all. You also get an interview with the creator of the series, a poster, and exclusive artwork. This is the quintessential strategy guide especially for Pokemon. Highly highly recommended.

Pokemon Black/White 2 Guide Book.I bought the guide book so i dont miss any of the items and pokemons while playing the game, a surprise hit me in the face while i was reading the walkthrough and theres grottoes in this one and thats a great twist in the game but the only thing the guide book was missing was the pokemon evolution guide, but then i found out that they separated the pokedex (pokemon evolution guide) from the Guide book unlike previous game guide books. Thats the only complaint I have about this guide book.

This is the first strategy guide I purchased since Pokemon Gold and Silver (not HeartGold and SoulSilver) and I am really happy with it but also slightly disappointed. As with the games, Nintendo and Gamefreak change features constantly it seems in their walkthrough strategy guides as well. Like I said this is my first guide in a very long time, but when old guide used to tell me what Pokemon every single trainer had on every single path that I would encounter. That's not so with this guide, they only tell you how many Pokemon the trainer is holding. It's still a great guide but that disappointed me. The rest of the book though is absolutely fantastic. The binding, the colors, the quality, everything is great. The guide itself doesn't start for maybe 50 or 100 pages in, but the intro and information in the beginning of the book is also just perfect. Some of the pages in my opinion seem to be out of ordered strangely. The page numbers are correct but the order of events gets a little strange at some points. For example they'll tell you to board the Team Plasma ship, but not tell you how to get onto the ship until after you read the whole walkthrough on how to defeat the ship. It's hard to explain but if you go through the book it makes sense. This little issue just leads to skipping ahead and then back a few pages. There's also a lot of information in this book that I would have never known about had I not purchased it. I've been playing Pokemon since I was 4 when Red and Blue came out and there is nothing better than the franchise. I read all the websites and look for all the information but still this book has succeeded in blowing my mind in finding out new information about Pokemon and this game in general that I had not known. All and all, for the price there is no reason to not purchase this. For any true Pokemon fan this is the perfect guide.

When this first was released it was almost double the price but now its a great price for a collectors edition. I don't normally get guides in collectorsedition simply because of the price but since it is as cheap as the normal edition why not right?The construction is great and the guide its self is good and detailed. shipping was great as always.

I really liked this book and I love Robin McGraw's insight into a lot of different things. This makeover guide is good at reviewing different makeup techniques. I got this book to replace the one I had that my dog chewed up.

Book was in EXCELLENT condition! Shipper packed the book to protect it. I am looking forward to using it as I read "Inside My Heart: Choosing to Live with Passion and Purpose".

Total waste of money. States the obvious and has pages and pages of lines to pad it out. You don't need it, trust me.

Well, as usual I haven't done what the book suggestion, but I loved reading it and getting inspired. I guess I'll have to crack it open again,.

That Red Valerian is something you don't see all that often in garden centers, yet it is lovely and blooms all season long, so I was glad to learn about it and what it goes well with. The book made me aware of the many lesser-known or overlooked perennials that seem to be out there, even if you might have to search online to find them. It is filled with color photographs, and has ideas and design plans for just about every conceivable type of color palette, climate, and season you're working with, be it woodland, waterside, desert, or tropical. Maybe I'm jaded, but despite the dozens of garden styles presented here, relatively few were so breathtaking that they stopped me in my tracks. Hence the four stars.

I have been gardening for about 15 years. I have read more gardening books than I can count, visited public gardens for ideas and spent hours in garden centers. This is the single best resource I have. I bought this only a month ago and it has already transformed my garden. I already had some of the plants in my garden, and when I resituated them according to her suggestions, viola! Instant impact! I have half the book dogeared and underlined.~I’ve seen numerous reviews complaining about grainy, unclear pictures. There must be more than one printing of this. The pictures in my book are clear and beautiful.

This compact book is packed with inspiration, colorful photos and examples of color combinations!! This is exactly what I was looking for because the photos give you a real feel for how the plants will look together. One of the gardens I am planning this year is a butterfly garden and I was pleased this has a great example of plants grown together to encourage butterflies and other pollinators. There are so many combinations of colors and styles as well as special gardens (shade, wet, dry, etc...), even as an experienced gardener I found some terrific new ideas in this book. Happy I made this purchase!

Received this book in a timley fashion. The book was in great shape. It is an old book, some 20 years or so. One thing about gardening, it's not real faddish. There have been some trends which are currently being featured that are addressed in this book, just not the focus of the book. Other than that little issue, a garden is pretty much a garden. Color combos being the most noticeable. Might want to keep these issues in mind when purchasing used garden books.

If you've ever drooled over perfectly arranged landscapes designed with fabulous color combinations, texture, and an array of plants all sizes and shapes who's colors are pleasing to the eye, this book is your tool. There are many garden companies that offer pre-designed gardens, but they're expensive and sometimes have plants that you just don't care for. This book gives you ideas, plans, tips on how to combine plants in such a way that it looks like a professional landscaper came and did all the work. Every design is wonderful, the photography is superb and the gardens are beautiful. A real asset for anyone who wants to have a beautiful garden without paying a designer/landscaper to do it for you. A great book.

This is a great book for the gardener new to design. It presents a fairly simple scheme for creating a flower bed that will have perennials blooming throughout the growing season. For someone wanting to create a new bed or who has just purchased a newly-built home with nothing but minimal landscaping, this book would help in planning a more colorful landscape. However, I do think that adding a chapter on incorporating perennials and shrubs would have enhanced the book as so many situations call for them. For instance, foundation beds with nothing but perennials would mostly be bare during the winter; shrubs, particularly evergreens, would give additional structure. Otherwise, this is a great place to start in planning a design with it's simple to follow, well thought-out steps.

To say stunning combinations is a vast under-statement if ever there were one. This book provides color combination from subtle to bold for all locations in the garden. The only end of possibilities is your own imagination!

Not very creative - quite boring actually.
