A crash course in Persian/Iranian history that transcends form. A novel that reads like nonfiction the way I wish nonfiction was more often written. Historical, semi autobiographical yet a true novel, one which elucidates a period of history still affecting the world and its people. Highly recommend this challenging novel.

Very well-written and poignant. It’s virtually a history of modern Iran told through the experience of the youngest daughter of an Iranian family living in Paris. Djavadi writes movingly about the difference between immigration and exile and the difficulties faced by anyone trying to integrate into a new, foreign culture. A beautiful book.

This book knocked my socks off. I loved the story. I loved the manner in which it was told. I loved the characters. I enjoyed the history lesson. What a writer! It's especially impressive since this is her first novel. I can't gush enough about this book. This one will stick with me for a long, long time. I hope there are more to come from Ms. Djavadi. An excellent read!

At the very onset, let me tell you that "Disoriental" is not an easy book to read. I think most literary fiction isn't. You have to give the genre some time to grow on you and once it does, there is no looking back. Having said that, the reading experience differs with every book.The thing with "Disoriental" is that (and to me, this was important while reading it) it is written in French (the adopted country of the author) and not in the author's native language Farsi. This in itself says so much about the book and its progression.The readers are in for a treat when it comes to this book. From a modern-day fertility clinic, we are transported to modern Iranian culture and in the bargain the history of a country. Might I add that there are magic realism elements as well that take your breath away, even if you have read Márquez or Rushdie. Kimiâ Sadr fled Iran with her mother and sisters to join her father in France, at the tender age of ten. She is now twenty-five, in a fertility clinic waiting for her turn and memories come rushing by.I love how Djavadi has integrated the personal and the political. It is as if they are intertwined and to a very large extent maybe they are. The past, present, and future of the country of birth will somehow in so many ways, will always be linked to ours, whether we choose to acknowledge it or not. The Sadrs are a flamboyant lot - from Kimiâ's formidable great-grandfather to her father and uncles. Not to forget her mother from whom she was greatly inspired. "Disoriental" besides being a book on identity, exile, and homelessness, is also a book on a family in the midst of political upheaval and regime change. Iran is described on point (not that I have been there but can figure, only going by movies I have watched and other books I have read) and there is mention of "THE EVENT" of March 13, 1994, which is spoken about throughout the book and revealed with a feeling of horror toward the end. The thing also about "Disoriental" is that it feels as though it has come from a very personal space, almost autobiographical and maybe it is. Family looms large in the narrative and plays along beautifully alongside, combining the personal and the political. Also, not to forget the sexual. Kimiâ's sexual identity is also explored which I thought was much needed. "Disoriental" is about distances and perhaps also about the ones we do not sometimes want to traverse. It is about alienation and somehow feeling grounded wherever you are, in a very strange manner. The tone and voice of the narration keep changing in the book, which to me made it jumpy and out of the flow. Having said that, it was needed to give background about characters and the place they came from. There are multiple journeys in one book - they run parallelly to each other and the author uses deep, lyrical sentences that give it the much-needed elegance. At the same time, to understand that all of this is translated into English makes one be in awe of Tina Kover, given how dense the book is. There is a lot of thread of memory - through objects, people, place and time (you will keep reading about THE EVENT a lot by the way), lending it the Proustian quality (I wasn't surprised at all). All I can say is that "Disoriental" is a book that has so much to offer, and does it in a lot of ways and stupendously at that.Â

“[T]o really integrate into a culture, I can tell you that you have to disintegrate first, at least partially, from your own.” The creation of Kimia Sadr’s individuality set against her Iranian and French backgrounds, Disoriental, Négar Djavadi’s debut novel, is as fresh as a newly fertilized egg. Born in 1969 in Tehran, Kimia Sadr is the youngest of Darius and Sara’s three daughters. Kimia is born for a second time in French, when she is ten, after her mother and sisters follow Darius to exile in Paris. Instead of Kimia, she becomes Kimi, with a chance to make up an identity all her own. She tells her story from front to back, beginning in the waiting room of a Parisian in vitro clinic and filling in her history back to her family’s roots in Iran. Although her father refers to the French as “them,” Kimia candidly narrates in the first person, addressing, “you,” her (mostly) French audience. She grows up steeped in rebellion, her parents intellectuals and protesters against the imperialist regimes of the Shah and Khomeini. She, too, rebels against growing up, against becoming a woman, against the past, against speaking, against assigned roles. The intimacy of her tone - including conversational phrases like, “for your sake…,” “let’s linger for a minute” - shows how far she comes from pushing against, keeping her distance; her “love disability,” as she calls it, to welcoming new life.Disoriental is a total reorienting along free associations. The novel is difficult to categorize. Based on the author’s life, it is personal memoir and political history layered betwixt and between each other. But it is also a collage of indie music and cinema, books and subculture references. It is literature on drugs, a stream of consciousness dialogue that only makes sense taken as a whole. Juxtapositions structure the book: the conversational tone and Kimi’s proclivity for hiding, Kimi waiting in the in vitro office and her father’s escapades, her birth and her grandmother’s death, coming out to herself and the 1979 revolution, 9/11 and reuniting with her girlfriend Anna, leaving Iran and Iranian New Year’s. While seeming coincidences, these pairings inform each other, forging new meanings and a unique genre of storytelling.Toward the end, the novel becomes more linear the happier Kimia becomes. She becomes the person she envisions herself to be: a music mixer. She masters sounds as Djavadi masters a new style of prose. Disoriental delights and challenges the literary palette with a one of a kind tale of one woman’s coming of age amidst Iran’s tumultuous recent past.

The Qur’an was not codified until approximately 300 years after the death of the prophet. The Hadith is a collection of the words and deeds of the prophet. There is more than one Hadith because various groups investigated the accuracy of the collected words and deeds of the prophet. Wahhabists believe Islam is a continuation of the religion of Abraham, therefore Islam is not a new religion. Essentially they believe that Islam should be practiced conservatively without modern influences. Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, a scholar, created the Hanbal school of thought that prescribes the way a Muslim should approach Sharia (the book indicates there are eight different schools of thought on how a Muslim should approach sharia). The Hanbal school of thought is a precursor to Wahabbism. Roughly 300 years later another Muslim scholar Taqi Ad-Din Ahmad Ibn Taymiyyah wrote books that described in depth how a Muslim state should be ruled. Taymiyyah developed an ideology that a Muslim can accuse another Muslim of not following the religion. Any Muslim not following the true Muslim religion can be punished with death. Mohammed Ibn Abd Al-Wahhab is the founder of Wahabbism. Mohammed Ibn Abd Al-Wahhab developed an accommodation with the Saudi ruling family. The rest of the book describes the first two attempts to establish a Saudi State and the establishment of the present day Saudi State. One has to read the book to understand why the author seems to think the present day Saudi State is unlikely to survive because of its dealings with the West. After writing this piece, I decided I liked the book better and gave the book four stars instead of my original thought of three stars.

This book was an enjoyable read, but it also has yielded incredible results for me RIGHT AWAY! I am a reiki master, and I found a gorgeous 2.5 acre property in Green Valley, CA outside of LA proper I wanted to convince my husband to purchase for a summer home (we live in Scottsdale, AZ).When we visited the home the first time, the realtor explained there were a number of items still in the home which belonged to the deceased couple who had owned it. One of them was the painting pictured whic Had i instantly recognized as having been seen before. When I was a young child, my paternal grandmother had that very painting displayed behind her living room sofa. "That couldn't be," exclaimed the realtor, "See there, she signed her name to it. Connie Tillman."Disappointed, I considered that perhaps I was mistaken. Later that evening, I sent a photo of the painting to my brother. He confirmed that he also recognized it as the same painting Grandma had loved and displayed.After our offer on the home was accepted, we returned to it for the inspection yesterday. There were many things wrong with the house, and my husband was ready to cancel the whole deal. I knew having this painting in the home was a sign to me that this was to be our house. Incredibly, after sitting in the living room, asking the universe for a sign for my husband to show HIM this was IN FACT to be OUR house and saying a few of the words of power in the book and looking at the sigils, I was guided to return to the painting, and turn it around! Sure enough, there was an article attached to the back which showed she had copied a famous painting. It had the title as well as a description of the characters, the story/message, etc. The sign for my husband? Well, this article was written in 04/1997 by a man named DAVID STEWART which happens to be my husband's name!!!!!!After that, he was convinced except that we could not find a contractor willing to travel to Green Valley in time to give us a bid on the necessary repairs by our deadline next Tuesday. This morning, nearly in tears, I looked at my book again, and I recited the words of power for "bringing people into your life who can help you" while looking at the sigil. Incredibly, almost instantly - after receiving no after no after no came a yes!!!! Later in the evening came another YeS! Now we have someone coming tomorrow morning and another on Monday.Namaste! I used the creativity sigil. For the first time in my life, I can actually see pictures to paint in my mind. The lost or hidden sigil I used to find a bolt I lost while working on a vehicle. This is definitely a win win book everybody needs in their house.

I bought a kindle version and right away read almost whole book, while trying to familiarize with sigils and pronunciations. During the process and at certain times I felt a little bit weird but that's all. Next day in the morning I tried a number of words/sigils combinations and gave it several hours but nothing happened so I assumed that I basically wasted seven bucks which is not the first time, and it is not a big deal. To be honest, I didn't expect for some big miracle to happen in just few hours but I expected that slight pleasurable magical feeling which I usually have when magic is real and something magical is about to happen (now or sometimes in the future).But then, that same day (evening hours) I did a short ritual with angel Ravchiel (from some other source) felt almost nothing, and went out for a walk. During the walk, I noticed few waves of negative thoughts bothering me and decided to give it another try and use "Stop thinking negative thoughts" words of power. So basically I was walking and at the same time looking at sigil at my phone screen, while whispering the words of power. It took me less then 20 seconds and then suddenly, I felt slightly pleasurable feeling in my heart chakra, which during next two hours turned to full blown ecstasy experience which I felt in my whole body.I can't really tell what exactly triggered such an experience, but now I'm sure I didn't waste money on this book. Not at all!

The Sigils in this book differ significantly with those found in the Gallery of Magic, but the book carries interesting information nevertheless. I like the book and have used it successfully to improve aspects of my life. I can't explain it rationally, but it works. The information is contemporary and ancient. As a new comer to the information it would be helpful for a book expanding in depth the history of the wisdom it offers, i.e., where the information comes from in a historic context. It origins, Also helpful would be citations from ancient manuscripts. Who originally used this information and how it developed and evolved in years past. The author notes Jesus was the first one to use the information and hints at other historic contexts. It would be helpful to have a book entirely on the information and its historic roots and routes through history. My sense is, although I cannot confirm this, is that the information holds its origins in WIccan Religions and its forerunners. I am not certain this is accurate or true but the Brand Books seem to mirror Jewish Mysticism and the Kabballah. Either way - regardless of its history - the book delivers.

This was a very good read, something that I will utilize and use in just about any of every occasion.The words of Power and sigil used for anger or to help calm down worked pretty much immensely.One thing that has continually helped me is to use the words of Power slowly and even mentally, think and visualize the sigil in your minds eye, it will help materialize your desired effect.Embrosewyn is a fantastic author, this book will help you with pretty much anything you are struggling with. I love this book and wish everyone had access to it to help with whatever is challenging for them. I highly recommend this book for everyone, and be open minded with what you are learning.

Helpful at times but we found that quite a bit was outdated despite being published only 4 months ago. Many restaurants we walked around town to find, only to learn they were closed or relocated across town, prices were often inaccurate and time estimates for ferry travel were wrong for a few of our destinations. You may want to try the Rick Steve's version instead.

What a great book! My husband and I love to see main attractions, but prefer most of out trips to be off-the-beaten-path. This book had great recommendations for both types of travelers. Also, I found in Croatia that restaurants could be exceptional or terrible, and there were no telltale signs for the novice visitor. This book had some really great recommendations. (Of course, asking a local is always the best bet.) I would definitely recommend this book.

Great recommendations for things to do in Split and Dubrovnik-- the walking tours and restaurant reviews were extremely helpful in picking out what we wanted to see and eat. All recommendations were spot on. For future editions, I would have liked a little more information/recommendations for the islands (we visited Korcula and Mljet, and had to do quite a bit of research on our own).

I bought this book to help plan my upcoming trip to Croatia, and it's exactly what I was looking for! There's a perfect balance between can't miss highlights and details. I also really appreciate the history and cultural summary that add to an understanding of the people you're likely to meet and places you'll see. The book includes some festivals or special events that typically take place, so I'll have to come back and provide an update once I've had the chance to visit Croatia!

We just returned for our trip to Croatia and as usual this Lonely Planet Guide was right on about most everything. This is my 19th Lonely Planet book as they are proven valuable tools to the smart traveller. I have used them from Papua New Guinea, Palau and Fiji to Pamplona, Paris and Prague. Don't leave home without it!

This book covered everything we needed for island cuisine and city visits. Information about restaurants was good, but we used the Top 10 Dubrovnik and Dalmation Coast to supplement. Between the 2 books, we had information for restaurants and sight seeing covered.

Helpful tour book for Croatia. It was a big help on our recent trip. Especially sites to see, history and also restaurant suggestions.

this was not near as good as the RickSteves book I ordered....

I came to this book after discovering Janice Hardy's blog during a Bing Search. I have always been the type of writer that really needs to plan the hell out of everything before I feel comfortable sitting down to write. I like knowing where I am and where I still have to go. I am CAPTAIN OUTLINER. So when I saw this book being so highly recommended - I ordered it immediately.Janice Hardy has a knack for explaining what is often said but not really understood. I've found her methods and advice easy to understand and quite helpful. The lessons at the end of the chapters really helped to teach just how planning a novel can work to lay the groundwork for successfully writing a novel, and a quality one at that. In a way it was much like understanding how putting together a piece of furniture by following directions can similarly apply to writing a novel - Step 1 do this, Step 2 decide that, and in doing so eliminating all those issues that keep a person from ACTUALLY writing that novel they've always dreamed of. .If you are a Beginning Writer, A Struggling to Finish Writer, or even a writer who finds it difficult to get comfortable with writing - then I highly recommend this book. It is easy to follow, regardless of whether you're just starting a first draft to a new novel or revisiting old works that just never felt right. I myself often return to the book just to re-read certain areas as I work through other drafts and stories. I would highly recommend that one by the "Printed" version. I made notes all through my book because I adapted some of the methods in ways that better suited my own writing techniques - and I think that's important for every writer..

A very useful book! I'm plotting my 7th novel (2 published to good reviews), but always looking to learn more. The goal is to write a better book with less fussing and cutting, and this book is definitely helping me achieve that goal! The sections are exactly what I need to work through the full plan, so I can hit the ground running when I start writing that excruciating first draft. Everything is clearly explained. I LOVE the brainstorming questions! I'm making little cards of them so I can doodle on them in between other things. And I appreciate the explanation of "filter words," with examples that make clear the different effects that can be achieved. That has given me a little brainstorm about how to differentiate my two POV characters. All in all, one of the best craft books I've read, and I've read a bunch. Thank you, Ms. Hardy!

I'm a big fan of the author's blog - Fiction University so I was delighted when she packed so much of her wisdom, experience and knowledge into a writers craft book. I purchased the hard copy because I knew that it would become one of my go to writing books and I was right. I recommend this well written book for anyone who is writing a book. The author covers everything from the initial brainstorming to writing the much dreaded synopsis. Janice Hardy has a gift. She is able to explain concepts of storytelling in a way that makes it so clear to the reader. I've always read her blog posts for just this reason, but I love having my own little manual next to my side when I write. Janice doesn't try and force the reader into believing that her way is the only way, in fact she covers many different avenues one can take to get the the same place. We all want to get that same place - a published novel. She is quick to point out that there is no right way or wrong way - what is right is what works for you. But, she offers so many options for a writer that you can't help but learn. I like that she included many exercises. I also admit that many times when I read a writing craft book, I skip the exercises. The author covers everything from characters to plotting and even teaches you how to write your blurb or pitch. The author shows you how to do it and then discusses it. She offers many examples and "something to think about" prompts and she shows you how to get the most benefit from the exercises. You will learn how to plan and write your novel that includes theme, a great hook, inciting incident, plot points, characters fully fleshed out with distinct wants needs, flaws and motivatation. You will learn how to connect the dots and put it all together so that when you finish the book and exercises you will have something worthwhile already written- enough to work with so that you can then write or revise a fantastic novel that has allof the elements of great fiction. Janice Hardy is one of the best writing instructors I've come across and she has a rare gift. She is able to show you what so many others have told you. I promise you that many lightbulbs will go off as you read her book. If you want to plan a tight, perfectly paced novel, read Janice Hardy's book and please don't skip the exercises.

A wonderful guide for beginners and great practice method for those who may be stuck or trying to get fired up about writing again. Love the workshop format. I had a hard time finishing this book not because it wasn't engaging, but because it was so inspiring. This book put my idea hamster into overdrive! Love the way Hardy addresses both planners and pansters, respecting the fact that each writer has their own process. having written stories both ways, I'd say she does a marvelous job of keeping both main processes in mind. Not an easy feat. Whether you're just starting out, or you feel like your process might need some tweaking or a fresh perspective Plotting Your Novel can be a great resource. Highly informative while maintaining a healthy dose of questions and examples to inspire new ideas.

This is a great, old-fashioned pie cookbook. There are hundreds of recipes for all kinds of pies. There are a lot of *chiffon* pie recipes, but even if the thought of those makes you uncomfortable, there are plenty of other recipes in the cookbook, as well. IF you love pies, you'll love this recipe book. It is full of some really great pie recipes. I have purchased several copies of this book for family members. The book, pie plate, pie pan, and gift basket or bow, makes great holiday gift. Or wedding gift for the newly married!!

I have used this pie book since 1967. My original version finally fell apart so this was a replacement. I have made dozens of pies from this fabulous cookbook and not a one has been short of splendid! A great buy!

It's a good review for me, especially for a variety of piecrust recipes, and for different artistic ways of working with the dough. It covers a very broad range of pies, from cherry to banana cream, chiffon pies to meat pies. I'm glad to be able to add it to my shelf of reference cookbooks.

I received this book as a shower gift in 1969. Over the years I looked for it to give others, but it was out of print. I was so happy when I discovered used copies on Amazon this year. I snatched up a couple of copies and wrapped them for gifts for my family members.The Farm Journal contributors knew how to make people pleasing pies. Still one of my two most favorite cook books. The other is the Home made bread book also available used.

This book was a lifesaver on our trip to France. It explains the unique way the French view the world, and outlines ways to negotiate the country (and especially phrases to use to let the French know we were't rude buffoons). It's our experience that the French, even Parisiennes, are lovely hosts and welcome tourists when we indicate a knowledge of their sensitivities. I've given copies of the book to several friends, and I never visit France without reviewing the book. Highly recommended.

Before our 3rd European trip I purchased this book and what a difference it made. Friends used to comment that the French were unfriendly. On our first two trips we thought the French were just a little too reserved. If our friends had read this book, they would have realized how much they missed by starting their trip without understanding the 2 or 3 basic rules of courtesy in France.If you approach someone and fail to say "hello" when their culture is based upon simple beginnings to a conversation, it is any surprise that the person doesn't jump to befriend you? Polly taught us the very simple means of being polite that opened the French to us. Suddenly we knew the simple secrets that caused the French to go out of their way for us.If you are going to France, you must read this book. Plus it is a fun read!

I've only just begun to read it, but, while valuable, doesn't seem to "flow" as well as her book "French or Foe" (that one gets five stars+). Might change my mind once I get into it more. However, still very glad I got it. It one has an open mind to at least be accepting of cultural differences, if not appreciating them, then both books would enhance any visit to France. But if one is NOT willing to look at other cultures other than their own of having any validity, then both books would be a waste of time. Many Americans are like the latter.

If you want to understand the French, buy this book. It's filled with all sorts of useful information, whether you are planning to just visit briefly or live in France for an extended period. Out of the dozen or so books I have purchased on France/Paris, this is one of the most helpful in helping me plan for my upcoming trip there.

I just got back from Paris, and I am so glad I read "Savoir Flair!" and "French or Foe." These two books prepared me for my trip and helped to make it even more pleasurable. I loved Paris! In fact, I loved it so much, I'm going back in August, so two trips in a matter of three months!The people of France were nothing but welcoming. Everyone was so nice. The French people went out of their way to be kind to me. I know for a fact that because of reading these books, I knew what to expect and how to handle myself in their environment. Everyone should read Polly Platt's books and take a few French lessons before they go to France, if they want to get the most out of their time there.I am now going to reread these books before I go again. I have purchased many books about France, but these were by far the most helpful.

This book takes a different slant than a normal DK or Fodors guide book - it allows the reader to get a sense of what it is like to visit France from a cultural perspective. While it is somewhat dated - the French culture has not changed that much and this gives a very helpful view of how to enjoy your experience and interact with the French in a way that is pleasing both to the visitor and the French.My concerns with the book (the reason I gave a 4 star rating) relate to the age of the book (published in 2000) and the fact that it appears the author is somewhat enamored with name dropping and high class living. The age of the book can be offset by purchasing a current guidebook (DK Guides is a good one) for current tourist type information.Other that these issues, I highly recommend the book.

Savoir-Flair was fun to read, and gave a great insight into the mindset of the French and Parisians. It was just slightly out of date (francs were the currency when it was written). It helped me prepare for my first trip to Paris this fall.

This book was a nice and quick read. It is simply a motivational book by the worlds greatest swimmer: Michael Phelps. I was expecting more of a biography. Instead, the author takes us race by race throughout the entire 2008 Beijing Olympics, for a total of eight races/chapters. In each chapter it digresses to different parts of Phelps' life. In addition, each chapter has a different title geared towards achieving your goals.Many times this book felt repetitive. It simply reinstates the same messages about setting goals, focusing and working hard to achieve them. Plus, I really didn't understand how many of the chapter titles stress that point in each chapter. It really felt like one repetitive message throughout the book. I also got lost many times throughout the technical points of swimming. You really need to be a hardcore fan to keep up with the different swim strokes, races, times, etc. (I guess Phelps underestimates the audience as most of us are not as familiar with swimming as he would like us to be).The good part of the book is that it is not dragged out. Despite the points above, it is a brief and quick read. It is very manageable to quickly read through this book and get its overall message very clearly. I am one who loves motivation and inspiration, especially when it is given by someone that is very accomplished in his/her field. Therefore, if you want a quick reinforcing motivational tool, this book is for you. You can probably finish it in a few days or a week at most. Plus you'll get a glimpse at the life of probably the greatest swimmer in history.

Good recording and great inspiration for my age group competitive swimmer. Enjoy listening to it.

I really enjoyed this book. My middle daughter is an age group swimmer and just finished her 4th summer so reading about the experience of the greatest swimmer ever was a great way to pass time at the pool while she practiced or in between her races at meets.

Hey, if your tired, and want to read something nice. This is it.

I am not a swimmer, but I found Michael Phelps' story really inspiring, so I got this book to learn more about his journey. He talks about his races and competition in a lot of technical details (some of which I skipped) but also gives a couple of personal stories - e.g. about his coach and family. While I wanted to learn more about his motivation and how he decided on his goals, this is not really in the book. But overall, it was a great read. Very quick, too!

GREAT READING. MY SON HAS ADHD AND IT IS VERY INSPIRING TO US.

I really enjoyed this book. Even though I am not a swimmer, reading the details of times and splits..all the swimmer talk was very well written and something I enjoyed learning about. The little personal notes and things on Michael Phelps were nice and shows that his head still seems to be on straight.
