I was engrossed in this book from the very start. There is little introduction character building. Instead, we get right into the action with the unfolding of the story itself acting as the characterizations. The story itself is exciting and tense. The author isn’t afraid of some losses as well. I also found a good deal plausible there with one generalized exception. There’s one character that’s the focus of the book. When the survivor group breaks into separate parties, we only get to follow this character’s actions. Likewise, we only get to read about his interactions with others in the party rather than what turns out to be NPC’s interacting with each other. My final complaint is simply that the hero is too heroic for me to have suspended belief. He’s also bizarrely lucky. I can’t list the reasons without major spoilers so I’ll leave it at that.In sum, this is an exciting, tense, light read with easy to root for protagonists with the jungle itself standing in for a real bad guy and it’s a serious foe to this bunch of unprepared teens. I’d prefer it done as an adult novel so to include subtleties inappropriate here as well as some adult themes. I’ve been dreaming of a re-make of The Admirable Crichton and if this were an adult book, it could have been that since it brushes along that theme persistently. However, it never tackles it head-on.Definitely a worthwhile read for both YA and A.

This novel's story is on two levels. One level is the simple prima facie survival story. At another level, is an allegorical story of the world's current sociopathic leadership. From my perspective both stories are synchronous and the symbolism is as in-your-face as the sociopathic corporate media's propaganda coverage.First off, the author does something very clever in his prologue, epilogue and at the conclusion of his acknowledgements. It's the first time I've run across it; and it is amusingly & pleasantly artistic. The prologue sets the stage of chaos; whose hand is at play throughout the novel. The author's epilogue, ingeniously wraps up an obviously loose end in a artistic chaotic completed package. Then in the acknowledgement, he lets loose this tightly wrapped package, right into the reader's hands. The novel starts off with thirty-nine students, three teachers, and one teacher's wife on their way to Costa Rica on a two week environmental high school field trip. After the reader gets to know some of the students and teachers the action speeds up with the plane doing a nose dive into the jungle. Not all survive, but those that do now face an environment that rarely gives second chances. The story centers around Tom Calloway, an outsider who really didn't want to go on the trip but got roped into it. Soon the allegory takes shape as Joel Aspinall, a student rep on the school council, son of some local politician, assumes leadership. Tom, and others soon realize that he's making decisions that are not in the best interests of everyone. The structure of decision making and the auto-pilot submissiveness of the majority of students are at odds with Tom and a few others who have different views on how to manage their survival. The story is set for a young adult audience; but it's themes are more along a Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm backdrop. There's plenty of action twists, turns, surprises and survival tactics. Readers who have watched survival shows will have their share of: been there, there done that moments.I like the message being hammered into young adult minds, to continuously question their leaders actions and policies. That's why I bumped up the rating on this. That message is for everyone one of us.Continuously question authority; or, live to regret it.

This is in the "teen" fiction section of Amazon but I think it is more for middle school age teens than high school or Young Adult. The characters are all in high school but it doesn't feel edgy or realistic enough for older teens. There is no swearing and no sex and the violence/death is fairly tame and not described in grisly or graphic detail. Even the plane crash is not very scary. So parents of younger teens (and even tweens) should feel comfortable with it.Tom is the third party narrator of this adventure story. He is an outsider at school and it is unclear whether that is because he naturally is an introvert or because his parents died several years earlier and he is being raised by someone who isn't very parental. The story opens as Tom and a large group of his classmates are flying down to Costa Rica for an eco-educational trip. The plane crashes with only the teens as survivors and the story takes off.On one level, this is a straight forward survival adventure. But there is a second story about how being in a lief or death situation can change people. Now this is no Lord of the Rings. It is much tamer than that. But you have kids who want to lead but make bad decisions and you have kids whose knowledge isn't put to use by those who appointed themselves as leaders. And you have Tom the outsider in the middle of them all.I thought it was an entertaining read and think both boys and girls will enjoy the adventure.

I have always loved poetry and even though I have never been a great fan of Allen Ginsberg’s poems I was familiar with his most famous poem “Howl.” I thought it would be interesting to see how his poem would be created into a graphic novel. For those in this generation who know nothing about Allen Ginsberg; he was part of what was known back in the early 1950s as a beat poet. He was friends other poets and writers like Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady and William Burroughs. These writers explored their innermost dark fantasies in their books and poems. At that time these writers were very popular among college students and intellectuals.I never was and never will be a great fan of free-verse poetry; nevertheless, I found this graphic novel (Animated by Eric Drooker) version of “Howl” beautifully illustrated. It also reveals the dark and brooding subject matter of poem “Howl.” This 224 page volume is organized into five parts.Part one covers “Who.” Part two illustrates his idea of big business in “Moloch.” Part three he explains “Rockland.” The final part there is a footnote to Howl. If you are a Ginsberg fan and enjoy his poetry you should check out this graphic novel version.Rating: 3 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Haiku Moments: How to read, write and enjoy haiku).

If you even use the word trigger warning in your vocabulary. Be warned. The entire thing is a trigger. I bought it knowing this. I suffer bipolar type 1, ptsd from rape trauma and severe social phobia. I don't believe much in triggers (much Bc I know that there are some but I also educate myself) this book is more of a "ahhh I understand and I'm not alone" reminder. Plus. It's amazing his recall through such manic episodes. His empathy for others (as most bpd and ptsd suffered can relate to) and love the style. It is a rough read. There Are tough subjects tacklers head on. I had to put it down and come back at later times. But so worth the read.

Allen Ginsberg is truly a master of language. I actually think he’s a legitimate genius with respect to developing a landscape with his words. Reading this book transports you to a San Fransisco alley, sitting with Ginsberg and his friends, talking of overthrowing the government, smoking weed, and having illicit sex.Much has been made (in some of the reviews I’ve read) about the language Ginsberg utilizes, and I can sympathize. It can be relatively shocking, especially if you’re not prepared to see it in poetry. I can remember being shocked by Ginsebrg’s language when I read one of his poems for the first time in American Literature class. Back then it put me off, and to be honest, I half-expected to be put off by it again this time, several years later. But I think since I was prepared for it this time, I saw it for what it was, an expressive use of language that fits the character of the narrative. It’s not like it’s a poem about daffodils and sparrows. It’s a poem about a generation of pot smokers, communists and poets.Final say: Absolutely read it, unless you’re sensitive to adult language, as I have seen that some people are put off by that.

Buyer beware, do not buy this for your Kindle. The letters are bunched up and overlap each other. At its worst, it looks like someone typed a letter, and then went back to that letter and typed another letter over it, and then another. It is a major distraction to say the least. Amazon has to step up its game with its digital poetry books. The bad formatting is what makes poets shy away from e-books, and this is a clear example.

I have been reading poetry to my kids for bedtime for years, now, and eventually bought this masterpiece for them. It is plenty juicy and descriptive, and, at times, fascinating to put yourself in AG's shoes. It is amazing how many variegated scenarios he presents in this book. The information AG presents is rich over the precious few pages of which it consists. There is plenty of meat in this book, especially when putting it into its historical and cultural perspective. Of course it has got plenty of four-letter words in it, so when reading it, I "bleep" those out; despite my own brand of censorship, my kids have named it their favorite of their poetry books.

Huge fan of Allen Ginsberg and what this poem did was revolutionary! With that said, I must admit the poem at times is lengthy and has a bit of drag to it. Now calm down, I still love it and have a CD with Ginsberg reading it. The words and imagery created by "Howl" are a slam to the face at times. It is a very powerful poem and I feel the Eric Drooker illustration helps convey the essence of Ginsberg's words. Does it always go hand-in-hand - no, but it does help move the poem with a better flow than just reading it. Even without the poem, Drooker's work is great and can be judged separately. The illustration on page 12 that goes with the Introduction by Drooker is my favorite, and clearly demonstrates his ability. The illustration is of an eagle soaring over a collection of buildings that form a maze. The eagle is heading toward a setting sun. Wonderful imagery for a powerful poem. It is the kind of book you will pull down off your shelf and just gaze at the art work. It makes a great poem even better.

While I was alive during the time that Ginsberg was living and writing HOWL, I was too young to have experienced this sort of life myself. And, based on his graphic depictions, I cringe to think I ever could have found myself in a similar situation. This is poetry. But it is not pretty. This is life. But it is not beautiful. Ginsberg writes a poem that is a cry from the soul, a view of his world through tired, sunken eyes. It is brutal in its honesty. But even as I read it, I was reminded of the Book of Job, and the rantings of Biblical prophets. Not just a should read, it is an integral volume of the Canon of Poetry, as necessary as anything by Homer, Keats, Shakespeare, Heaney, Plath: it belongs in your memory, and on your bookshelf.

My three-and-a-half year old son LOVES Thomas and Friends and we like to read a couple stories before bedtime every night. We love the Little Golden Books because they are the perfect length and we can typically read at least two of them before bed, if not more. My son didn't have this book and he also enjoys watching Dinosaur Train so I figured this story would be a good one to add to our collection.Thomas and the Dinosaur is the story of Percy coming into the shed claiming there is a monster in the forest. Thomas doesn't know what a monster is and he's scared to go into the forest but he has jobs to do. As he is on his way to work, he encounters the monster, which is actually just a model of a dinosaur that is being used for Sodor's new dinosaur park. After Thomas learns what dinosaurs are, he is pretty proud to help pull the dinosaur to the park.Like all LGB, this book measures 6 1/2 inches by 8 inches, has hard covers, paperback pages, and a gold spine. This story is 24 pages long, has colorful illustrations and at least a couple sentences on each page, or set of pages. It fits in perfectly with the rest of our LGB collection and is a good story for us to read. It takes us about five minutes to read, or 10 if we talk about the story. I love the length of these stories because then we can read a couple before bedtime.Overall, we like this book and read it occasionally but we have so many LGB that we don't read it too often. I love how the Thomas and Friends books teach lessons in many of their stories and this one teaches kids that being helpful is something to be proud of. The product description states that boys will enjoy the book but I don't see why girls can't read it because my three-and-a-half year old daughter (I have twins) likes to listen to the story as well. This story is nice for toddlers and will be good to have as my kids get older and learn to read. If you have a Thomas fan who also likes dinosaurs, this is a good book to buy. There isn't a lot to this story but my kids still enjoy it and it teaches a lesson, so it was worth it for us to purchase it.

My 2.5 year old is now terrified of dinosaurs after the first half of the book is Percy whomping up scary feelings discussing dinosaurs. My daughter now asks every night at bedtime, "Are there going to be animals? ... Are they going to eat me?" I suppose we should have waited longer to read the book to her, but the fear Percy felt could certainly have been written more tactfully for the young audience.

Got this for my 3 year old grand son whose favorite playthings at this age are...yes, you guessed it...trains and dinosaurs. What could be better than one book with both of them in it? It is educational with a positive message and he has me read it to him every time I come over. This makes for one happy grandpa.

I haven't read this book, bought it for my nephew. However. It arrived in very bad condition. A new book was ordered and it arrived looking like it had gone through some very hard times. The spine was cracked and you can see the pages through the spine because there are holes! The book is all scuffed up. Hopefully the story itself makes a hit with the recipient because as it stands I am not happy. The only reason it's getting 2 stars right now is benefit of the doubt on the supposition my nephew will like it as a Thomas fan. Otherwise it would get 1 star.

Very cute book! My son loves Thomas and dinosaurs and this is the perfect combo! wW bought this to add to his book shelf but it rarely gets put down. The story is simple, Thomas hears there is a "monster" in the woods and finds out it's a dino statue he needs to transport to a new dinosaur amusement park. He overcomes his fear of the "monster" and gets the statue to the park successfully. Cute story about over coming your fears!

Thomas the train & dinosaurs... perfect combo for a toddler! Good thing they don't care about writing skills or story lines though because it's not very well written & I'm not a fan of the fact that it involves only one fake dinosaur. But it's not about me & what I like, it's about the little boy I bought it for & he absolutely loves it! Even his little sister likes to roar along while we're reading it.

Really cute storyline and if you have a kid that likes both dinosaurs and trains, well then, this is a winner! Little Golden Book has not lost their touch, I just love being able to hare my love of reading with my kid. Note, these have paper pages and are not suited for toddlers alone. They are best if you read to the toddler, they can be easily torn apart.

My nephew's two favorite things right now, in the same book: Thomas and dinosaurs! My nephew is going through a train, specifically Thomas, and dinosaurs phase. I was surprised to see this book this book exists and had to get it for him. He's not reading yet, but likes to look at the pictures. This was a great buy and a good way to get him into books and reading.
