A great book about one of the important potters of our time. Seven artists, critics, historians, and friends, followed by Karen's own observations, document her life and work. Central, analytical, and factual, it is a fascinating story of creativity and dedication. Inspiring and long overdue, it is important reading for all artists.--Warren MacKenzie, potterMark Shapiro has assembled a stellar cast of essayists to explore the intriguing life and work of potter Karen Karnes. They write with a grace, clarity, and reverence befitting this maker of sublime yet curiously humble clay masterpieces.--Mark Hewitt, potter and co-author of The Potter's Eye: Art and Tradition in North Carolina PotteryThere are too few books that treat pottery as seriously as other art forms; too few that pay sufficient tribute to the achievements of women artists; and too few that situate great art within a rich biographical context. This finely textured book does all three, providing in-depth analysis not only of Karnes's pots and sculpture, but also of the life of the fascinating person who made them.--Glenn Adamson, Deputy Head of Research and Head of Graduate Studies, Victoria and Albert Museum

I was fortunate enough to be one of Karen Karnes' students at Hunter College in the mid-seventies. At first I was not educated enough to really appreciate a ceramics department that boasted Karen Karnes, Susan Peterson, and John Mason as instructors. I was a painting major who accidently discovered Karen's wonderfull teaching techniques when I attended the class of my best friend. The following semester I signed up for Karen's ceramics class, and stayed with clay for the rest of my life. That was 40 years ago! Yikes!Karen exemplified the sharing qualities that are often associated with potters. She was an excellent advisor to handbuilders as well as wheel throwers. Patient, kind, softspoken, and oh so talented and wise, I find that I am still influenced (consciously and unconsciously) by Karen's style, forms, and excellent craftsmanship. Often, when I asked for advise by my own ceramics students I will automatically say, "I'd like to suggest..." rather than coming on like gangbusters. (I must also admit that John Mason and later, in graduate school, Doris Licht, were also true mentors.)"The Chosen Path" is a beautifuly realized tribute to one of America's living treasures. The essays are interesting and imformative, the photos are well chosen, and, in particular, Karen's stunning works are handsomely photographed and presented through out the book. I was given a copy of the book for Christmas about four years ago and then, a few months later, Karen sent me a signed copy. That one I keep home while the other is on my desk in school to share with my students. So...even today, Karen shares her talents with others though her actual work and through Mark Shapiro's excllent book. My only regret: when Karen and her partner, Ann Stannard, were invited to my wedding 37 years ago, I told Karen not to give us her pottery; knowing her, being her student, and receiving recommendations for graduate school, were more than enough. Karen complied with my wishes but still gave a lovely book about love and committment. Years later, I wish I had kept my big mouth shut. :)

I recommend this book for any person who wants to know what it would be like totrain and become a professional in the field of ceramic pottery and sculpture. Few youth get the opportunity to find out what it is really like to be a professional, talented, dedicated artist. This is something that is covered in this book. As a former high school art instructor, if I could I would give this book 10 stars. I feel it is especially suited for college age group considering a life as a professional artist.

A nice book about one of the masters of American studio pottery. Nicely written and well illustrated.

An informative text with far too few images of her work.

This book has been carefully crafted to open the reader to the world of this wonderful ceramic artist. Written by people who know her and her history plus an important section by Karnes herself. Illustrations and other material of interest. This is a catalog of Karen Karnes retrospective that is traveling the country.Book arrived promptly in excellent condition.

Beautiful book with lots of great photos.

The book arrived with a ding at the edge.Otherwise very pleased.

I leafed through this book when we saw this show at the Asheville Museum of Art. A gorgeous book, from a very gorgeous show. As a whole her output surveyed makes a stunning impression: deft, confident, and somehow avoiding the inherent "craftiness" of pottery. Even when, in the seventies pieces, they look like every other piece of seventies pottery you have seen, but only twenty times better. Most amazingly, her most recent works are the best. The bluish-gray pieces with oblique tilting appendages on the sides are a seeming summary of the anthropomorphism of pottery itself. And the devastatingly beautiful ceramic chairs or seats in a group are so much greater than any "installation art" you will ever see. For once with those amazing chairs or seats all the usual talk about art evoking "loss" and "absence" has a concrete and so beautiful evocation which is palpable, seemingly (even though you can't touch) and not imaginary. Yet, are a vindication of the imagination and its link with human hands.

If you have a friend that needs a perk up from life, this is the book for them! I was so happy when I heard the laughter through the phone. I wish I had bought one for myself. The book is good quality and well constructed.

I love this author's (Marciuliano) books, and this one was no exception. If you have cats you definitely can relate to some of these, and others are just really funny. The book is small and cute, good for short reads. I read this to my mother and she commented many of them could relate to me (I'm not sure how I felt about that statement, I guess I'm cat-like). I would encourage anyone who likes cats to read it.

Adorable photos with very funny paragraphs about the cats' opinions. A great little book for a gift or just to have for any cat lover. I cracked up over many of the writings.

I think my cats help to write the e-book “You Need More Sleep: Advice from Cats.” The pictures are cute, and a lot of the sayings tend to be spot on when describing the behavior of some of my past cats. If you like cats, you will enjoy this e-book.

...one perfectly understands what this funny book means! I have it crowning my tower of books to be read. Yes! I do have an early XX century wooden arm desk chair, for holding the pile of books that I must read!!! The sleeping kitty is always keeping them warm at the top of the pile.

Super cute - something cat owners and cat lovers can relate to. I purchased it as a gift, and decided to read it myself. It's a quick read, and pretty funny.

Cats give good advice. I am reading another, "Making Rounds with Oscar", that underlines this point.

I love cats so my son and daughter-in-law gave this book to me for Christmas. I ordered this book for 2 other busy grown sons who need to sleep more. It is a wise book -- taught by cats with cute instructions, when life seems out of balance.

This book is great! I no longer have to tell my 12 year-olds to wash their hands, brush their teeth! Now they think it's their idea based on the knowledge they've gained from this book! A science and hygiene lesson all hidden behind what kids love most, gross stuff! Fun, funny and interesting! Will definitely be on the look out for more from this author.

My grandsons who are twins loved this book and could read it themselves

I just read this hilarious and well written/illustrated book to my daughter’s Kindergarten class. The kids were rolling over with laughter and also learned a little. My six-year-old asks me to read his to her every night.

Great gross book with silly illustrations to help develop or further a child's fascination with everything "gross".Goes from urine to dog kisses to gaming. It has a section that talks about breaking bad habits.Downloaded on Netgalley in exchange for a free, honest review.

This book is a solid guide to understanding what it takes to get a job in information security. If you’re a recent grad looking to get into the field, or a veteran of another industry, you’ll learn the history, the lingo, and the mindset you need to break into information security. The author breaks down that you don’t even have to be technical to get a job in information security - strong analytical skills and an appreciation of process are more valuable than being a programmer or having a network engineering background. It was an enjoyable and informative read.

If you are interested in infosec you owe it to yourself to get this book. If you aren't sure if its for you this is the cheapest way to find out. If you are just starting out the book is filled with lessons learned from experience and strategies for progressing in the field with contemporary knowledge of someone in the field. The author also runs a podcast about infosec where he interviews all sorts of people in the field. Author knows what he's talking about. Give it a shot.

Easy to read and follow, especially for someone new in the field.

If you're trying to advise a young person who's fascinated by hacking but doesn't know where to start, and you don't know enough about security to get them started without getting them arrested, this book is the coach you're looking for.Not every kid is someone you can toss a book on shell scripting and say, "Ummm, this? Be sure to Google 'how to avoid getting arrested' before you try any of the exercises. I suppose you might need to drop a few hundred dollars on a spare computer or something? Your ISP might shut you down? I don't really know. Good luck figuring it out!"That's particularly true when mentoring someone from a non-traditional background who may have impostor syndrome if they dive straight into pen testing Reddit forums, someone who isn't used to having a coding-oriented group of older friends to learn from, someone whose ethnicity might lead to them being judged as malicious if they actually just made a mistake, etc. This book tells its readers WHY people will throw words like "TCP/IP" at them as "something you need to get good at." It gives readers an idea of "how good at" such things they need to be for various jobs in security. This book does the soft-skills "learn how to learn" and "what kind of person you need to be" and "what kinds of jobs there are in this field" advice very well -- although so does the author's podcast. (Also promising, by another author, although I haven't yet bought it: "Secure the InfoSec Bag: Six Figure Career Guide for Women in Security.)If a young person only had the podcast, they might feel like they'll never get "really" get started "learning to be a hacker."What's special about this book is the way it interweaves that "soft skill" advice with hard-skill advice like "learn TCP/IP."This book is an indispensable resource for anyone in an advising situation who doesn't know enough about security to provide coaching. Buy your advisee this book and discuss it over coffee.

Afterworlds, by Scott Westerfeld

Review

*STARRED REVIEW* Eighteen-year-old Darcy drops her college plans and moves to New York to revise her soon-to-bepublished novel and start the second one. Meanwhile, in chapters that alternate with Darcy’s NYC adventures, her fictional protagonist, Lizzie, survives a near-death experience to find she has become a psychopomp, responsible for guiding souls to the afterlife. Westerfeld masterfully creates two divergent reading experiences (YA romance and fantasy horror) with two distinct yet believable voices in Darcy and Lizzie—and, somehow, makes them mesh into one cohesive novel. In addition to the details of the fully realized story worlds—and that's worlds plural, as this is a busy book, with content drawn from Gujarati culture and Indian religion—this book includes romantic entanglements, a charming lesbian love story, terrorism and justice, and insider references to the YA publishing and literature scene (including several references to the Michael L. Printz Award) that will have librarians grinning in delight. Westerfeld deftly and subtly captures Darcy’s immature authorial voice, even including a few underdeveloped plot points that differentiate it from his own polished prose. There are no notes about cultural sources, but an extended conversation between (fictional) YA authors explores these issues, offering a few perspectives on respect and appropriateness. Get plenty; this one won’t stay on the shelves. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Westerfeld, author of the hugely popular Uglies and Leviathan series, goes meta in a big way (this thing is the size of an anvil). Expect tons of YA-world gabbing and gushing. (July 2014 Booklist)During National Novel Writing Month, Darcy Patel, 18, pounds out a “Hindu paranormal romance” that earns her an advance hefty enough to fund a college education. Alas, Darcy has other ideas, moving to Manhattan to do rewrites and deferring admission to Oberlin. What follows are two stories, told in alternating chapters: Darcy’s path to publication, and the final draft of the book she wrote, also titled Afterworlds. Darcy’s new experiences inform her revision: falling in love for the first time makes her rethink the romance in her book. Her protagonist Lizzie’s story is more explosive, beginning with a terrorist attack that she survives by so thoroughly pretending to be dead that she slips into a ghost world, where she meets Yamaraj, a hunky “soul guide.” The back-and-forth between Darcy’s story and her thriller is dizzying, but “Reading Zealots” like the kids Darcy hung with in high school will love the insider details about the YA writer’s life—the intimidating editorial letter, attending BEA (Darcy naively brings her own canvas tote). An ambitious concept, well executed. Ages 14–up. Agent: Jill Grinberg, Jill Grinberg Literary Management. (Sept.) (Publishers Weekly, 6/30/14 *STARRED)“A masterful accomplishment . . . unmistakably Westerfeld, in full command of a prodigious talent, doing something complicated and difficult and making it look easy, even as it grabs you and drags you through its dark streets, laughing and crying along with both Darcy and Lizzie.” (Cory Doctorow boingboing.net)

Told in dual-narrative, Afterworlds, the title of this book is actually the title of the book that Darcy Patel, the protagonist is working on. Darcy, eighteen years old, has landed a two-book contract for almost a quarter million, and her life, as she knew it, changes overnight. From someone who has never lived alone, she moves from Philly to NY, and is thrown into the rigmarole of what goes into the few months leading to the big debut. It was absolutely delightful to read about everything you have always suspected being a blogger, about how the life of such a debut author would be. So I guess a part of it was wish fulfillment, to see it all on page, even if it felt slightly exaggerated and surreal – all the YA author parties, gatherings, pre-pub tours, the discussions about what makes a good book, “originality” versus writing what sells, the brainstorming during editing and rewrites and so on. Then you also have Darcy’s friends, through whom you see yourself on page too, as they are yapping on about how they have read or heard about most of the not-yet-published books because of their well-connected school librarian who always got hold of the latest ARCs.The entire book, i.e Darcy’s book “Afterworlds” is within this book. It is interspersed with Darcy’s story every alternate chapter and right off the bat you know that everything works out okay and atleast the publishing goes without a hitch, because you are practically reading the finished book within this book. But Westerfeld manages to make it interesting, especially by showing Darcy’s inexperience at pretty much everything – as an author, a lover and well, as someone terrible with her finances. Darcy can’t stick to her own schedule, is caught up with the bling of a new city and you just get a feeling that she has a “I will just wing it in the end” attitude sub-consciously. All the self-doubt about whether she was even a real author was done pretty well. At one point she wonders whether she is a fluke as she finished first draft in 30 days but she is taking months to rewrite the final chapters.I personally felt that some of the Indian rep was done well. There were so many little things – about Darcy’s parents being believers but not that religious, her sister Nisha being great at math and hence looking over the family’s tax filings, her engineer dad, her mom’s story about how they didn’t spent any money on clothes when they first came to US and got everything from India, Darcy being naïve and clueless about a lot of things in NY because she has never lived alone, screwing up the budget allocation Nisha planned for her .. and so on.. It was a good balance between atypical and stereotypical .. because hey, there is no one “true rep” and the truth is always somewhere in between. And gosh, I loved all the moments when Darcy was searching for an apartment and ended up going atleast 500$ over-budget with the final monthly rent. She pretty much tears Nisha’s financial planning to shreds, it was a bit of a trainwreck tbh - Darcy paying 3500k per month in NY without taking in any roommates and then casually blowing up money on food every eating outside frequently instead of, well, spending on setting up her kitchen so that she can cook at home. I think she finally does that (?) through her aunt gifting her some stuff and her dad driving over with some items(? I am not sure) but she continues to blow up money anyways. Nothing extravagant, but frugal or budgeted living is definitely not her cup of tea. She did give the impression of someone who knew she has a safety net of a stable loving home and a reasonably well-off family to return too if her writing career doesn’t take off as early as she expected.Darcy ends up falling in love and living with another writer with Imogen and I thought the author contrasted the difference in their personalities pretty well; some of it due to their age difference. Imogen has been in atleast one relationship more than Darcy, and also has a markedly different work style when it comes to her writing. All this sort of manifests into challenges they have get through while living together, especially with Darcy struggling to give Imogen her space and privacy. Imogen, in turn worries about how Darcy will handle Afterworlds’ success (or failure). In some ways, Imogen takes charge of their present by making some difficult decisions so that they have the promise of a better future to look forward to.I think what I struggled with the most as a reader is getting through the entire book (within the book) Afterworlds. I loved the idea TBH; Yamaraj is someone I am familiar with since I am Indian. But gosh, Yamaraj was made to be such a watered down and bland representation. Westerfeld might have as well written Twilight 2.0. Lizzie and Yamaraj’s love story was THAT kind of Hot YA commonplace. Look, I get it, the author’s intention was to show how so many stories publicized as “epic” YA romances are finally clones of one another and that so many authors have those breakthrough debuts with such stories (?). After reading Darcy’s novel, you do wonder – How on earth did THIS book get her a hundred grand in advance? The most interesting function of this book is however the conversation it generates regarding cultural appropriation. It raises questions with no definitive answers; but just further questionable topics for debate? Under what terms is “cultural appropriation” acceptable? Is there even such a thing as acceptability? Does Darcy being Indian exclude her from the criticism of getting the “essence” of her cultural history wrong when translated to paper? Considering she isn’t even that religious, can she be considered an “authentic” source of authority over the “correct” representation of Hinduism? So much of this brought up in the book, and in between Darcy is shown doubting herself. But, Darcy’s internal conflict doesn’t manifest into any real, tangible consequences.I wasn’t a huge fan of the world-building in Darcy’s book. It was a pile of confusing mess, like Inception on steroids, except that you have ghosts and your ghostly selves on different astral projections. It was hard to keep track of the different worlds (Overworld, Afterworld, Underworld) along with the permutations and combinations of time, space, visibility and travel constraints in different worlds. So yea, definitely not my kind of fantasy novel. But if is something you enjoy reading, and can get past the slightly simplistic (deliberate?)plot stretched across half the book, then I think you would definitely enjoy Westerfeld’s Afterworlds in totality.I quite enjoyed it for its unique idea. I might have liked it more if we didn’t end up getting Darcy’s entire novel and instead got snippet like say, Simon Snow’s fanfic in Fangirl, just enough to get an idea (and enough to drive discussions about appropriation). But I really all the “real” characters – be it Imogen, Nisha, Darcy or her friends. And I definitely enjoyed reading about Darcy more than Lizzie.

Though at points too brilliantly meta for me to handle, this book was incredibly well thought out and cost me far too much sleep because I had to finish it. You know those literature classes when you had to figure out what the author was thinking? Here, you know what the author was thinking. And it's superb. This book was written with two stories told in alternating chapters. The two stories could have stood well on their own separately. Darcy's tale wouldn't have been as compelling, but Lizzie's tale, the book Darcy wrote, would have still been wonderful. However, as someone who adores reading with all her being, I absolutely LOVED seeing the process Darcy went through as an author. Though I've been interning with a few agencies and have quite a feel for the industry, I think sometimes publishing is such a mysterious concept for readers and as such seeing the writing process live for a book I was reading was just so much fun! I always love to hear what authors changed and improved from their first drafts to the final copies, and seeing it as it happened was the best.I kept getting frustrated because each chapter left me wanting more and as such, I couldn't stop reading and just didn't sleep though I kept promising myself I would after one more chapter (which of course turned into two because I wanted to know what happened to the other girl!) This is really a credit to Westerfeld's writing--but then again, he's Westerfeld. What did I expect?Props for having non-binary sexualities. (I wish we lived in a world where this was a normal thing, but we don't, so many props.) Also, Darcy totally wrote her book during NaNoWriMo. Thank you, Westerfeld, for validating so many NaNoers' dreams.Darcy's story on the surface wasn't as exciting as Lizzie's--no evil forces sewing souls or anything--but it was brilliantly clever. There's a part where characters are asked which of the five parts of storytelling is most important and the answers are brilliant. There are parts where subtle fun is poked at authors and the writing process. I love how much attention she pays to respecting her religion and how she uses mythology in a way. There's a regular teenage girl who happened to write an awesome manuscript and make it, and if you're an avid reader, you've probably wanted to be there for at least a millisecond, making Darcy a fabulous character to relate to.Lizzie's story was intriguing and I loved the world that Darcy/Westerfeld built. It was easy to believe and very vivid in my mind. I would have liked to have seen more substance to Lizzie's romance, but then again, I'd be more excited to read this book in a literature class and analyse how there is little substance because Darcy hadn't experienced any romance before she wrote it. This is so meta. So brilliant.I'm going to be raving about this concept for months. And this book doesn't deserve all of the stars just for the concept, but also for how brilliantly executed this was. I'm crazily impressed by this one.

Great read! Super funny and easy to read!

If there were any justice in the world this book would have hit the New York Times bestseller list. As what, I don't know. Humor? Non-fiction? Fiction? Pure wicked genius? I got it from the library but I'm going to have to buy a copy for my keeper shelf. Somebody give Mr. Purnell a MacArthur so he can have time to write more brilliant books like this.

Hard book to find. Thank you!!

I loved Persuasion. There are so many things to learn on how to be persuasive and make people listen to you. This book will teach you everything you need to learn how to be influential and persuasive. It is a first rate Jane Austen novel. As it is written in a form of older English language some sentences require a second read for full comprehension. But all in all a very enjoyable read.I heartily recommend the reading of this book to anyone who will understand and appreciate it. In other words, anyone that is a "teenager" should be able to read this novel with delight. Guys, you may not read it with delight, but, no doubt, you still will enjoy it. And I do so recommend you read it. It is not a sappy love, as foretasted it is a wonderful analysis, story, and work of art. Yes, I think effective storytelling is a work of art. This book taught us many methods to persuade people in a positive manner, this is a very knowledgeable book and the author really did a great job. A must read highly recommended.

Exciting and powerfully written book with an array of examples depicting the methods employed to persuade your subjects to compliance.I even practiced a few of the examples given in the book and it was fun to find that this Robert character actually knows what he's talking about. I definitely recommend this book, rather your looking for a first read, if you are already a genius in this theme then I cant assure you anything, rather than if your looking to see what themes a book should have for someone who asks you to recommend their first book about persuasion of the minds, this is a really good one.

This stood out from my search for persuasion books; #1 best seller and also within my desired price range.Hahaha, I would gladly recommend this book to all those marketing salespeople. They really would need this to improve their ‘persuasion’ *performances*.Though I hate to admit, I believe I am one of those people who had persuasion confused with manipulation (I have never done either to anyone though ;) ). The first paragraph of this book opened my eyes to that fact.Personally, I don’t really understand the reciprocity part, since I buy goods with bonus offer just because they are bonus! And not because I want to reciprocate, nor have I ever felt like I should return the favor. Anyways good points. This book will certainly be fascinating for many people, since it’s pretty much revealed in here how the marketing minds work. I think the part “marketing strategies” should be added to the title as well.

This book is well written and very helpful. By the help of this book I have learned some techniques to become master of manipulation and mind control. Inside of this book the author has described about persuasion psychology and compliance management very clearly. By reading this book I have learned about the basic techniques about persuasion. Actually, I needed to learn about how to develop my persuasion skills easily and quickly, for that reason I purchased this book a few weeks ago. This book guided me about how to influence human behavior. I have also learned mind reading secrets and mind control strategies. I got my question answered from this book and I am really glad to read this book.

I love how the book was written with the techniques and how these were presented in real life situations. What caught my attention is the first part which stated the true purpose of the book which says "to persuade you need to have a common purpose". As a business course degree holder, I can agree to the methods listed relating these on how to achieve higher sales and how to effectively present your product. Not only do the techniques apply to business but to life as a whole. You need to think and strategize when and how to lure other people and not to deceive them and most importantly you need to perfectly deliver these strategies if you are aiming at a target. Perfect organization of ideas and thoughts and the book was easy to read.

It was interesting to think about and learn about some of the motivations behind actions, and how they apply. The book served as a personal insight for me to determine best influence tactics based on certain situations. I feel that the information I've gained from reading this will give me a lot more confidence and will enable me to influence a wider range of people. I think it can do the same for anyone. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who was wanting to learn communicate great ideas but communicate influential ideas.

This is an excellent book to become a master of manipulation, influence and mind control. This book is written on important things of Persuasion. Inside this book you can find the basic technique of Persuasion and how to develop these techniques, how to influence human behavior, mind reading, the persuasive power of fear and other important things which are very useful for us. All topics are helpful.

This was a fun read, it talks mainly about human behaviours and reactions. Most of us probably have done some of the things that have been mentioned in this book even if unintentionally. It was very interesting for me to think of those situations from a different perspective. And also, very important to learn other possible reactions to certain behaviours. Highly recommended.

It's been a decade since Chiasson wrote The Island of Seven Cities, the book that made many rethink early exploration in the Americas. Now he returns to Cape Breton Island to explore new ruins finding more ancient mysteries. Unlike some who write on these topics and grasp at straws or do little research, Chiasson has uncovered more evidences pointing to explorers predating the French and English. It continues to defy logic that this island is ignored, even when the natives of the region assert these early explorers existed - and their own culture appears to have taken cues from the Chinese. Chiasson also examines the claims made concerning the Zen brothers and Sinclair landing in the region. As he points out, supporting evidence is often thin as some present it, but is it completely without merit? I too agree that equating Sinclar with Zichmni is a stretch, but I have read elsewhere that Sinclair was often spelled "Zincler," which opens up a whole different possibility. One of the more deeper studies of Zen/Sinclair reaching the New World is Irresistible North. Regardless, this area seems to be part of a region that had seen much activity pre-Columbus, from Vikings to possibly now the Chinese. Menzies really opened the idea of Chinese in the New World with 1421: The Year China Discovered America, though sometimes hurt himself by throwing in every tenuous evidence (his Who Discovered America? solidified his argument better). Chiasson's books have laid out the groundwork for serious inquiry into where and when the ancient Chinese fleets landed. In 2016, evidence of a second Viking site was found, so will people start to take seriously other sites and evidence of pre-1492 explorers? Or will we continue to cling to outdated bias that has long ago been discredited?

I admire Chiasson's writing and find his take on these ruins very convincing. I had never heard of the idea that Chinese settled Cape Breton and Nova Scotia before the Europeans did. I think he has done a very thorough analysis of this subject and is willing to go in courageous new directions in Canadian history. Of course he finds a lot of opposition, this always happens when controversial new evidence emerges. He sticks to the facts he has come upon and doesn't expand on all the possibilities these new developments imply. I wish he did a little more of that. This book focuses on one little town and the ruins he comes across are not remarkably interesting, certainly not something like Stonehenge, but the fact that he proves they are pre-European is the fascinating part. My only problem with the book is he is making a whole book out of a somewhat dry story about this one little area. To accomplish this he bring in other controversies about who else may have appeared in Nova Scotia and how early. His attention to details, while demonstrating thorough research can be a little more than I really desire to read about. I certainly hope Mr. Chiasson writes more books about this subject, I believe there are many more ruins to find and the implications of his writing will upset the whole colonial settlement applecart in eastern Canada.

"Written in the Ruins" is a valuable, must-read follow-up to Paul Chiasson's earlier book, "The Island of Seven Cities". The earlier book argues that a large site on Cape Breton was built by Chinese explorers before Columbus. "Written in the Ruins" interprets a second site of ruins on Cape Breton Island. The second book updates the reader about the controversial first site and interprets the ruins (and stories) about a second site on Cape Breton. I am impressed by the diverse historical sources brought to light by Mr. Chiasson, sources that provide striking clues that Cape Breton is indeed "different" enough to warrant thorough archaeological exploration. I am also impressed by his thorough review of criticisms that have been offered to the first book (see also three short youtube videos that address these effectively). Chiasson has helped open the door to an expanded history of North America; I look forward to learning that someone has walked through that door by scientifically excavating parts of the two sites.

Loved the first book, but this one seems a little bit forced. This could have been a simple chapter in the last book. I get it: Chiasson is finding more info as time goes on, but re-reading the same point over and over again is tedious. This book could have been much shorter and more worth the time (not that it isn't worth it!).

Excellent book! Instead of trying to make the case for his idea, Chaisson eliminates each of the other views first. Then, he gives his opinion based on research. He tells his personal story throughout which makes this a more fascinating read in my opinion.

This book is a good read. One that is not stated in the history books. It should be mentioned. As I t is important to the history of the region and also to the lives of the people on the island, if not to the entire country of Canada.

After having read and thoroughly enjoyed Chiasson’s first book, The Island of Seven Cities, I looked forward to finding out more about his theory that the Chinese possibly settled in Canada before Columbus set sail for America. I was not let down. Written in the Ruins provides tales of explorers, maps, legends and archeology. Chiasson resurrects the stories of people from the distant past and explains their influence in shaping history that most of us never question. Chiasson offers compelling and detailed research. He raises questions without demanding that the reader agree with his theory. Rather, the reader is encouraged to synthesize the evidence and draw our own conclusions. In the end I was left with no doubt that a Chinese fleet came to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and settled the island well before any European set foot on North American soil. Written in the Ruins is a wonderful read for anyone. It will be of particular interest to those who are intrigued by world history, how that history gets told and what is left unsaid until someone like Chiasson bravely steps forward.

#154,895 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

After working with Java for years I needed to quickly ramp up on Go. I learn better by reading, doing, reading again so followed these books in order -1. Go in Action (for a whirlwind tour)2. The Go Programming Language (for deep understanding of language construct, philosophy and design intuitions)3. Go in Practice (to rapidly gain acclimatize myself to the new ecosystem)4. Concurrency in Go (to try to gain mastery in Go's CSP-oriented Concurrent Patterns and building blocks)5. Building Restful Services with GoThis book (# 3 above) is a superb tour of the development practices and will reaffirm the lessons learned elsewhere (books, hands-on tutorials etc). For example, it quickly shows how to "inject" configuration data into an app running on PaaS cloud; how to use BOTH syncGroup and Locks; idiomatic usage of channels etc. Like all Manning books, the depth of writing surpasses expectation with clear annotations indicating critical parts of the code.I wish the authors gave a few more examples on benchmarking (especially with highly concurrent functions) and fewer on how to reading properties /configuration. There were probably four recipes for the latter, mostly differing on subtle library patterns, that felt more than what one would typically need.

I've gone through quite a few books on GO lately and this may be the best I've ever read of any programming book. There is an interesting notation where examples are numerically notated - then descriptions for each of those notations - This is near identical to live training I have experienced from classroom environments. The numbers make it absolutely clear what the authors are trying to show in the code examples. The background of Golang throws out some neat elements you probably dont know about the thoughts behind Go and its makers approach(es). The examples. samples are clear and concise without being too contrived - they build on previous examples in many cases but use practical demonstration that will allow those new to repeat the style and even reuse some of the code to get going on their own projects. Sure they are 1000 line blocks or get too mired in detail - but they are useful. The book covers the necessities and doesnt skimp on concurrency. Coming to go without a background in concurrency and the GO implementation via goroutines, channels, waitgroup, etc. it helped me understand the confusing elements of how to manage channels. The notation that was useful before, becomes critical here... and it succeeds.Other diagrams are a bit blocky - but luckily they aren't critical to any real understanding - boxes within boxes honestly... not sure what that represents except perhaps container/scope ideas.Overall there is nice coverage of so many areas - you are sure to find something that applies to what you might be looking for: templates, Logging, error handling, command line interfaces, web app, JSON, file handling, etc...Like I said - maybe the best development book i've read.

I am an experienced software developer with very little experience in Go and wanted a book suited to someone like me. This is it! It's not a "Go Bible" type of book that bores you with language minutiae nor is it a "Cookbook" that leaves you with little foundation in the language. This book does a fabulous job taking you on a quick tour through the important parts of the language to get you productive in Go. Along the way, the author presents plenty of well-annotated Golang code which I followed along with on my computer to maximize my uptake of this information. To get the most out of this book, I recommend that you first run through at least one good Go tutorial to get a basic understanding of the language constructs. Then follow-up with this book to accelerate your learning of Go and apply it to many real-world issues covering command line apps, JSON, server-side programming, concurrency, REST, and cloud programming.

I seldom give five-star reviews to programming books. But, clearly, a lot of effort and care have gone into writing "Go in Practice." And I really like the book's structure and its approach to helping Go newcomers move beyond the basics. After a Chapter 1 refresher on the history, advantages and key features of Go, the 11-chapter book moves into areas that include "well-rounded applications", "an interface for your applications", and "taking your applications to the cloud." In each of these three sections, the authors present useful techniques such as "Avoiding CLI boilerplate code", "Using multiple channels", "Serving subdirectories", "Incrementally saving a file", "Custom HTTP error passing", and "Using protocol buffers," among many others. Indeed, some 70 techniques are presented in Problem, Solution and Discussion format, along with useful, but not unwieldy, code examples to illustrate what happens. If you are still learning the basics of Go, this should be your next book. Stick with "Go in Action" or another starter book, for now. But if you know the basics and are now ready to get more serious about learning and applying this versatile programming language, definitely give "Go in Practice" some serious consideration. And if you already are developing with Go, it can't hurt to take a look, as well. You may pick up some new techniques. The two authors have been described as"key contributors in the Go ecosystem for years." (My thanks to Manning for sending a review copy.)

Immediately after an intro book like "Introducing Go", you should pick up this book. I'll simply confirmed the other positive reviews here. The text are very clear and concise. The examples illuminating and the structure logical. Worth every penny.

Another excellent Harry Bosch book from Michael Connelly. I started reading Connelly's Harry Bosch books from the start of the series and noticed a marked improvement when I got to the 4th book in the series" The Last Coyote." That improvement continues in "Trunk Music". I love the works of John Sandford and John Grisham and have now added Michael Connelly to this list of my favorite Modern Authors. If you have not read any of his books, check out "The Lincoln Lawyer" and go from there.

Michael Connelly is a master. This was one of the first Bosch novel I read, back when it had just come out in paperback. I was hooked and had to find the beginning and read them in order. Those old paperback eventually got traded in on his more recent works. I decided to fill the holes in my Connelly library with the Kindle editions and re-read the whole series from the beginning. Every time I read one of the Bosch stories again I pick-up on more details that connect to the plot and to character development. Re-reading this particular book made me realize how loosely the Bosch TV series is based on the books.

Number 5 in the Harry Bosch series and still moving along. I probably found this to be an exciting plot of the books to date. It was full of procedural detail and there were so many different cons going on at once I was occasionally confused, but figured it out before the end. Nevertheless Bosch, as usual, came out on top. I like his new boss who was able to bend the rules occasionally and stood up for him. I found the story line of Eleanor Wish different and a little strange. I raced through this book in record time and on to Book 6! I need to start watching the TV series!

Trunk Music is the 5th Bosch novel and Connelly’s 6th novel to write (I believe). As is the case, this review is probably somewhat pointless. If you like Bosch, you’ll read this whether I tell you to or not. If you haven’t read Connelly before, this isn’t really the best place to start – there are characters here that have been introduced in previous novels and frankly, there are a handful of misses here. It is a good read though. Fast-paced, some unexpected twists, even lady entropy makes some sudden and explosive appearances. Like many of these series mystery novels, a portion of the tale is used to continue the overarching story of the main characters. Here, we get a new romance for Bosch that almost certainly will have some appearances in later novels. These moments didn’t necessarily drag for me, but they weren’t my favorite. Connelly handles police procedure better than he does sweet nothings. For some reason, the chapters in this one are really long. For example, chapter three beings on page 207. It’s hard to pinpoint the exact effect that had on my experience, but instincts tell me it wasn’t positive. I don’t know if he does that again in a later novel, but of the ones I’ve read, which is about ten, this is the first I’ve seen him do this. All in all, another enjoyable night on the town with Bosch.

The body of a porn movie magnate is found in the trunk of his car. Seems there are plenty of suspects because of the very nature of his "work." However, the more Bosch looks into the crime, he finds layers and layers of deceit. The usual suspects are eliminated one by one and the final outcome is not what he was expecting it to be.He meets up with a racist cop and the red herrings are all over the place. The investigation carries him to Las Vegas, where to his surprise, he sees someone on a surveillance camera that he never expected to see. Old memories, good and bad, flood his psyche. He finds that even the cops in Vegas have secrets and he doesn't know who to trust. This isn't some run of the mill murder, there are many layers and many motives.

I bought almost all the Harry Bosch novels for my husband. He said they were okay which means good. I have just started reading them, and as far as I'm concerned I find Harry Bosch to be kind of a douche on several levels. He's been violent against coworkers and higher ups, he's insubordinate, a liar, and has put people in his department in danger. The women in his life are annoying, too. They all seem to drop out of sight, and he almost seems hapless when they do, but he's supposed to be a great detective. I'm not feeling it.

Who wouldn't love a mystery that begins with hearing the music of the L.A. Philharmonic coming from the Hollywood Bowl and Det. Harry Bosch called to a murder scene on a bluff overlooking the Bowl and a dead body in the trunk of a White Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud. Following that great beginning is the search for the killer of the victim which, as usual for Michael Connelly, takes you on a long journey though the mean streets of L.A., a few trips to Vegas, and ends in Hawaii with a very unexpected twist from Det. Bosch. This was one of my favorite Harry Bosch stories.

I am on the 7th book of the series, and although I like reading them, Bosch has started to annoy me. Mission or not, brilliant detective or not, he seems to continue making the same stupid mistakes and getting himself into the same sort of trouble. I guess some people never learn. With Bosch it is like an unhealthy obsession... His tendency to "lone coyote" behavior tires me. Complete disregard for others when he's driven by his obsession. Or, alternatively - exposing his partners to risk just because he feels personally guilty and wants to be a hero for his current girlfriend.Often, with all his supposed brilliancy, he really does not see the point, which leads him astray. An amateur would make better guess who has done it than Bosch does sometimes.Still, I am going to continue reading this series, at least till new Lukas Davenport might be out :)
