He remembered her friendship with Shane as kids. He remembered her beautiful green eyes and he could not get her off his mind. She inspired many aspects of the art he created and was his muse. He was hoping she would let him paint her. Their first date was a simple dinner. Nina was a half hour late due to a flat tire. As she entered the restaurant, the artist in Chet cataloged every part of her, imagining how he would paint her. He finally asked her if she would allow him to paint her in a public park, and she agreed.Shane wanted an account of how the first date went. She told him Chet would probably ask him to go for a drink so they could reconnect. Shane didn’t like that Nina thought Chet was attractive. And he told her that if she and Chet got together, he would no longer be her friend. She assured him she would never risk losing their friendship – but she was a little disturbed by the tiny doubt that sort of lingered in her stomach.When Shane joined Chet at a local dive for a drink, Shane warned him to never hurt Nina. He told Chet that Nina had said he was attractive, and Chet couldn’t get that off his mind. Because he knew, if he had any chance at all with her, he would take it. He knew that little by little, he was already starting to love her. Would this ruin any chance for reconnecting with his mom and brother? Shane would never let him hurt Nina, no matter what. Would Nina be forced to choose her friendship over something more with Chet?This book was so much more than I had expected. I loved the characters and the way they cared for each other while still being cautious, not only for themselves but for each other. The story line was simple but very compelling. The description of the story made me think that Nina would be offered a million dollars to go out on 3 dates. Although that wasn't what happened in the story, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved all the characters but Chet was my favorite. Nina is a college student who is struggling financially. Shane has been her best friend for most of her life. Chet is Shane's older brother who left home at the age of 16 and hasn't been back since then. They all have their quirks and baggage but they are able to work through them in time for a HEA.

I thought this book was really good. The storyline was a little different which I enjoyed. The characters were likable. The chemistry between between Nina and Chet was undeniable. The book kept me engaged and the ending was perfectI received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Beautiful romantic love story with humor,laughter,and the kind of love found in forever! A broken family,a best friend,and two brothers who reconnect to what’s been missing to make life complete! Thanks for the incredible read,I laugh,cried,and felt the love ❤️❤️

I loved everything about this book from the unique storyline to the main characters Chet, a tattoo artist as well as a sketch and paint artist, and Nina, his brother Shane’s best friend. She’s getting her Master’s Degree and as oft is the case, short on money. Chet contacted Shane and told him that their absentee father has passed away in Ireland and has left his estate in Chet’s name. He will share it with Shane and their mother if Shane will arrange three dates with Nina who has mesmerized him for the past six years since he saw a picture of her with Shane on his social media page. She has been his muse in so many of his tattoo designs and in his drawings and paintings. It’s this draw to Nina that brought him back home after all this time. Shane’s a skeptic but relents and presents the contract that Chet has drawn up for her to agree to the three dates, an the money will be divided between Chet, Shane and their mother. The dates begin and so does the mayhem between freinds Shane and Nina and then between brothers.. I enjoyed the writing style, the unique storyline and the romance that develops between Chet and Nina.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I bought this book for my Son, who developed throat cancer several months ago. He says it has been quite helpful to him in getting through this ordeal of Chemo, Radiation, and Surgery. He's still not "out of the woods," but he saysthe suggestions given here are helping him cope.

Ms. Teish weaves a compelling first-person story, balanced with rituals and work.Whether you're a woman looking for spiritual answers in a confusing and conflicted world, an historian surveying cross-cultural religious traditions, or a beginner curious about the spiritual options of Voudou, this book is tremendous and worth looking for. It's a page-turner, no matter what your background and interests.

I'm sad there's not more discourse concerning this book floating around--this is a book you should add to your library. Here is a book where the personal is spiritual as well as political--Teish expertly combines her personal narratives of her journey into a spirituality that is both progressive and deeply rooted with a compendium of practical rituals. The worldviews and rituals here show a beautiful and seamless mixture of diverse African diasporic traditions--Lucumi, Vodoun, and hoodoo--with women's spirituality.This is a must for anyone's book shelf--Luisah Teish is a major voice for women of color within the women's spirituality movement, and (as you'll know if you watched The Goddess Remembered) she did a lot of work to make this movement (which sprang from "second wave" feminism) intersectional. I love this book. I had seen people talking about this book for quite a while now, and I get why people think it is oh so special. This is probably the best book I purchased in 2018. It’s so full of information and wonder. It makes sense if many things my grandparents and mother did while growing up. Brian Green is one of the easiest of the serious physicist writers to follow. This book is long, but packed with info, and fully readable by most anybody (no math to speak of). He is exceptionally good at explaining and illustrating the concept of many-dimensions, and even illustrates what (if you use your imagination) they may "look" like. As with most respected physics-oriented books aimed at non-scientifically-trained readers, you'll learn more about "what is" current theory than you will understand about how physicists got there.

This is the first time I have to read a book twice. I literally went from the last page of the book to the first and started over because I did not feel I had gotten more than 30% of the book (improved to about 80-90%) in that first pass.As I read it the first time, I thought most of the theories felt like science fiction, and thus they had to be wrong (never mind that they were developed by the most brilliant human beings in history)... I could not relate any of what I was reading to my daily life and I fwlt that what I was being asked to believe was too much.... not on the second pass: that time I used much more imagination and allowed “science fiction” to be real. That changed everything for me and the second time I was able to really see the universe as this place where “unbelievable” things can happen.The hardest part for me about this book is the inability to visualize more than 3 spatial dimensions (probably many feel this same way), despite the authors emphasis on trying to extrapolate his examples to lower dimensions where visualization is common place.My only complaint is that the book was written in the 90s and i am sure that there has been plenty proved and disproved about what is discussed in the book and so my only real want would be that they had a modere updated edition which clarifies where some of the mysteries (at the time) have been cleared

Brian Greene is one of the leading physicists in cosmology and String theory. He explained the most difficult theories of Einstein relativity, string theory and multiverses in a very simple words. He drew many day to day examples to explain difficult concepts, like space curvature and many others, till we not only understand it but feel it.The String Theory is very difficult to understand since it tries to bridge the gap between macrocosm and the microcosm of the quantum physics. Greene made it very accessible to us. Still String theory is not complete and conclusive, it is work in progress. The way it is explained made me convinced that it is the ultimate theory which Einstein was looking for.The scope of the book is huge, many technical terms, a lot of detailed notes and detailed history of the beginning of the theory tens of years ago. After I red the book I feel the need to read it again and read all Greene's books. This is a must read book.

We are in 1999, Greene is talking about the physicists quest to explain the universe on elegant terms. ELEGANT, hum? Right now things are inconsistent (say you can't explain gravity using quantum mechanics). So ELEGANT here means “a quantum-mechanically CONSISTENT description of all forces and all matter” (his own words). He did a great job explaining how string theory was created to TRY to connect together gravity (relativity), electromagnetism and quantum mechanics. But finishing this book is like stepping out a Museum of Modern Art. You are about to see some CRAZY abstractions within quantum geometry. Those many curled dimensions in a Calabi-Yau space look graceful at first. But you can't step out of the Universe and relax.

It's not easy to write a book about such a technically demanding subject for a general audience, and get the ideas across without the mathematics that supports them. The author works hard to accomplish this and, for the most part, does a good job. However, his line of argument, that string theory potentially can explain the universe at all scales, pushes the bounds of believability, at least for this reader. This book isn't easy reading, but I learned a lot from it and would certainly recommend it to anyone who would like to find out what string theory is about.

Excellent!!!Dr. Green gives a brief introduction into the history of physics of the last century or so including great introduction to the laws of Relativity (both Special and General) and Quantum Mechanics. And then - on to the latest: the String Theory. It includes the major problems in physics and how they were resolved by one or another theory (sometimes creating new problems).All this is done from the viewpoint not of a journalist, but of a scientist - an actual contributor to some of the major discoveries.What I found the most amazing is that all these extremely complicated issues are explained using not formulas, but pictures and analogies that are put together in such a way that anyone can read it and get the conceptual understanding of the basic facts (deeper understanding would, of course, require serious math background).

It takes some good visualization abilities on the part of the reader, but the author does manage to give good insight into some very complex topics without math. Background math and other technical details are in end notes for many topics if you want to delve that deep.I was also pleased to see that it's not just a book on string theory. The author also gives a very good historical background on relativity and quantum mechanics as well as the competing theories for unifying the two.

This Catechism was written by Pope Pius X, and it was intentioned for the masses, and written at a level of question/answers for anyone to understand.

I have seen in the past books which claim to be "reprints" of Catholic books which added or changed the original text to V2 words. This book appears to do the same. Example: Q 29 on the creed: a man outside the Church of a different religion through no fault of his can be saved etc etc, which is a V2 teaching. But Q 27 immediately preceding clearly says that no one can be saved outside the Catholic Apostolic and Roman Church, which is the true teaching of Pius X. Catholics would do well to avoid this book.

In these times of much confusion in the Church,it is good to have a Catechism that cuts through the modernist muck and states very clearly what the Church has ALWAYS taught. indispensable in learning the basics of the Faith!

A very good Catechism for the Catholic Faith which retains it's value even today. In the words of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI): "The faith, as such, is always the same. Therefore, St. Pius X's catechism always retains its value, … There can be persons or groups that feel more comfortable with St. Pius X's catechism. ... that Catechism stemmed from a text that was prepared by the Pope himself [Pius X] when he was Bishop of Mantua. The text was the fruit of the personal catechetical experience of Giuseppe Sarto, whose characteristics were simplicity of exposition and depth of content. Also because of this, St. Pius X's catechism might have friends in the future"

For years I have asked many of the questions that are in this catechism, and now I finally have a straight answer. I have never heard any of this coming from the Catholic clergy. Why?!?!!!Souls by the millions could be saved if all Catholics were required to read this for RCIA.

It is much clearer than the instruction I received as a child. It's actually somewhat frightening because it makes many things rather starkly clear.

I bought this book looking for natural cleaning solutions, not necessarily cost-effective cleaning solutions. In that respect, it has met my expectations. Please note that on pages 26 & 27, the author includes a list of herbs and their beneficial properties, which comes in handy when you are substituting herbs and oils for the recipes (hint: this means you do not have to buy every single essential oil or herb listed in the book. For example, you can substitute Ginger for Lemongrass, etc). So far:Recipes I have been impressed with:1. pg 33: Citrus Sparkle Automatic Dishwasher Powder (I add table salt to the recipe and use white vinegar in the rinse compartment to cut back on the white residue stuck to the dishes)2. pg 50: Tough Dirt and Grease Formula floor cleaner3. pg 64: Germs-Be-Gone Toilet Cleaner4. pg 104: Lemon Fresh Dust Buster (substituted "Lemon Balm" tea with black tea and it worked just fine)5. pg 132: All-Purpose Citrus Wall Cleaner (even dried blood came off the wall with this)6. pg 143: Heavy-Duty Herbal Carpet Steamer Formula7. pg 182: Fruity Travel WipesRecipes I have been not-so-impressed with:1. pg 58: Mold Deterrent2. pg 168: Mold and Mildew Destroyer (seems like 10% bleach solution is still the best deterrent and destroyer for mold... sigh...)3. All of the laundry detergent recipes. They are almost the same recipes you can find online, but the author directs you to use much more of it. Someone new to green cleaning might not realize that there are more economic (and still natural) alternatives out there.Bottom Line: I have deducted one star for the recipes that I have found not up to par. However, if you are looking for a simple green-cleaning book that will meet many of your needs, this book should be a good start.

Like many Mamas out there, I’m super busy and I work PT from home as well so cleaning my house doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. When my kids were little, I kind of let it go and now that I have big in school FT I have a lot of making up to do. The wonderful thing about this book is that it gives you step by step instructions of how to go about cleaning all the rooms in your house in a methodical, efficient manner which saves time. It also provides how-to clean this or that which you’d think I’d know how to clean a kitchen by now but she has all sorts of ideas about doing it fast which I need. Lastly, but most importantly, she does this all in a non-judgemental tone, she’s like us...she gets it so it makes it less daunting to clean something you’ve let go for a long time.

I've begun to clean with natural solutions and slowly eliminate the commercial cleaners. I cannot believe I was suffering all these years with commercial cleaners that burned my eyes, skin, nose and throat. And these natural solutions work better than the commercial stuff! The recipes call for items you can get any grocery, general store in your area. The only items I did not have on hand are the dried herb leaves, but I'll be trying them soon. I recommend reading this book. You'll likely find at least a few recipes in here that will allow you to save far more money than the price of the book. I would also like to note that the author does not include recipes with excessive amounts of essential oils which could be harmful; sadly some authors are irresponsible with the level of EOs they include in their recipes. But I find this book to be safe and helpful.

I love making natural cleaning products with my essential oils, this book has lots of great recipes as well as inspiration for cleaning with non-toxic ingredients. Vinegar + baking soda = salt water. Borax + vinegar = salt water. Borax = unsafe for skin contact and anything that touches food. Vinegar + castille soap = pool of curdled oils. Also will literally add any essential oil to any recipe for no reason. Uses essential oils in unsafe ways. Gives no reason why you should choose one recipe or another when several recipes are suggested for the same problem- which tells me the author didn't actually test these at all. Wish I could get a refund but unfortunately I took like a year to get around to reading this.

This book is the greatest purchase you can ever make to save hundreds of dollars a year and stop using toxic chemicals in your house. I have asthma and allergies and every time I'm exposed to bleach or ammonia I end up with a prolonged asthma attack/episode and sinus infection and laringitis. I have to keep my health first. Bleach and ammonia are the main ingredients In Mustard Gas. Think about it.

Although the wreck of the Wager was really a tragedy, I could not but enjoy the accounts of Bulkeley and Byron since is a good source of information about Chile in the 1740s. The life of these people was miserable, almost surviving in bad weather all the time, cold, rain and more rain, nothing to eat but mussels, limpets, clams and if lucky, they got wild fowl and seal, most of the time rotten seal. The party who traveled south to the Magellan strait, arrived home sooner than the party that headed north, although they suffered the greatest casualties since, as you can imagine, living on mussels could only last till they reach the atlantic, so when they headed north through the coast of Argentina, it was emptiness, there was no shellfish, so killing seals was the only option to save their lives. Lots of them died of hunger, and as related by Bulkeley, "hunger is void of all compassion; every person was so intent on the preservation of his own life that he was regardless of another's, and the bowels of commiseration were shut up".The small group who decided to go north, suffered a great deal trying to find the way out of Wager Island. It is amazing how these people survived the cold, being wet all the time, they even have to eat the leather of their shoes. If the story of Bulkeley is interesting, the one told by Byron is that and more, since instead of being a diary, it tell the story with much more detail. You learn a little about Kaweskar and Chonos Indians, the way of living of these people, how they reached Chiloe with the help of these Indians, how they were treated by the Chiloe inhabitants, the customs of the island, a story of potatoes, chicha, plenty of food, estancias and the few ones living there -like those women who avidly smoked tobacco. I just smiled, since I thought to myself that "not everything have changed since then". But it is not only that, the book narrates Valparaiso and especially the life in Santiago, the people, its customs and of course the earthquakes, that they experienced in Wager Island, Chiloe and Valparaiso.If I had to chose, I think I would have chosen to go South, since if there is something I eat weekly is mussels, but I am sure also that possibly I could not made it alive. When I was reading this book, I was only thinking about a way to reach Wager Island. When I was a kid I traveled to Punta Arenas in the navy ship "Aquiles". I don't recall Wager Island, but I do recall "Golfo de Penas" and "Puerto Eden". To travel today it would be a fascinating adventure, I can only think of doing that in Kayak, from Puerto Eden heading north to Wager Island, Byron Island and the islands to the south, and from there to follow the same path Byron took, reaching lake "San Rafael" on foot and then navigating the channels till a point favorable to cross to Chiloe. You can go south also, to Punta Arenas, but that is a much more difficult path, certainly more dangerous. In summary, an incredible real story of survival and to be read by anyone, especially if you are from Chile.

This book is divided into two halves.The first part, by a seaman, is alright. The story is told plainly and down-to-earth. Unfortunately, it is badly marred by the seaman being totally paranoid about being convicted of mutiny on his return to England. This greatly affected the things he selected to mention and the emphasis he placed on some of them. There are also roughly a dozen formal, signed memoranda documenting the position he and his mates where in and the reasons for their actions that were drawn up on the spot. Very dry and tedious stuff.The second part, by an officer and an aristocrat, generally flows well and is pretty gripping. Some of the passages, especially towards the beginning, are written in that hifalutin convoluted manner the upper classes affected back in those days and are pointlessly difficult to unravel. The strenuous and arduous hardships in the first two thirds of his narrative are especially gripping. The last third that concerns their mostly kind and genteel treatment at the hands of the Spanish is fairly boring. It's only excusable by realizing that there wasn't much info about how people lived in those parts generally available back in Europe at that time.Apparently Byron went on a subsequent voyage and wrote a book claiming there was a race of giants living down in those parts! Crazy.Anyway, I mostly really enjoyed this book and it made me go out and order Richard Walter's narrative of commodore Anson's voyage and of whose squadron the Wager was a part.

This is the narration of an historic wreck in one of the most inhospitable parts of the world as told by two men; one in each of two opposing bands of survivors. One loyal to an inept captain and the other not. Survivors of both groups eventually make it back to England. The written account of the events as seen by each author, served as pledges for each side. It is fascinating comparing both accounts when they overlap.But the stories separate as the teams split, one to surrender to the Spaniards and the other one to turn back through the treacherous Cape Horn. Both stories unfold with endless suffering through hunger, the cruelty of natives and scarier, the violent sea of southern Chile.I read for the first time in Byron's tale a particularly sad episode in which he witnesses the killing of a native child by his own father. I read again about this in the Unknown Shore by P. Obrien (who lifted the whole story in that novel) and then lately, retold by Charles Darwin in The Voyage of the Beagle, when passing through the same part of the world some 80 years later. I guess a good story bears retelling.

I wish there were a way to return this book. It does not have page numbers that are accurate/coordinate to the page numbers in the paperback copy, so I cannot reference quotes with page numbers, meaning I cannot use the book with APA citations.

Shaping School Culture, at 287 pages, excluding references, and index, is an academic tome on school culture—though the authors define culture through others (on page 8); the authors do not exactly define it within their scope of reference to begin at their on starting line, but without a foundational consensus definition, continue on from there. That is not to say that it is detrimental. Culture may be one of those intangibles that are unable to be tangible.“Parents, teachers, principals, and students have always sensed something special, yet undefined about their schools—something very powerful yet difficult to describe or put your finger on” (p 8). That is an extremely apt quote for the majority of the book. It tries to lay out a paradigm for changing the school culture into something more positive, productive, and prosperous. And, it may very well be a quagmire at times, quicksand in others, yet freedom for most of the book.The authors admit that the book grew out of their previous book for principals. But that does not mean that anyone else will not benefit from the book. While principals may indeed be the only ones that can truly move the school culture where they want it to go, teachers and other employees have every bit of stakeholder ownership in the school they work for.The authors offer a clear simple thesis: shaping school culture is in everyone’s best interests. They reveal their theme through stories of business, management, and education. They insist that every school can become a great one, as long as everyone involved is in it together and that no one is the salmon swimming upstream.The writers sharpen their focus through stories of well-known companies, IBM, Starbucks, Costco, and extremely well-regarded schools. This may be a double-edged sword to many: is this book a dog wagging its tail or the tail wagging the dog? Do they use well-known prosperous companies as the examples, or the exceptions? Is this book in search of a thesis or a thesis ins search of a book? The authors did a remarkable job of placing their theme within the confines of well-establish entities that have successful cultures and try to show how a weaker school can improve their school culture, grow, become prosperous, attain the culture that the school officials desire. It is definitely not an easy task, but a definitely achievable goal.The authors provide a great amount of research to back up their propositions, almost too much. Research paper after research paper is rolled out with theoretical question frameworks to start with. This may seem overwhelming to some; but in the ends of an average principal, answering the questions that begin in the book will definitely shed light on the present culture and can move one out of the darkness. It does take some resilience to go through the myriad of questions; but, real progress is never easy to achieve—it requires effort to want to change for the better.Credible, accurate details fill out the stories that are told and provide real things to grip on and inflate the storytelling arcs of the book. The details provide the impetus to emulate the best-of-the-best schools in the country, and provide the “data: that is sorely lacking on which to hang anything on. The authors are extremely knowledgeable about school culture and cite their own research throughout the book.The writers are able to grab the readers’ attention from the start by re-telling stories famous companies with outstanding business culture: IBM, Starbucks, and Costco. The examples foreshadow what is to come as they move to the age-old question: If schools are run like businesses, will that make them much more profitable and successful? The movement is subtle but necessary to demonstrate that if enormously bureaucratic companies can change and flourish, so can;t small or medium-sized schools and districts.A variety of carefully selected phrases and sentences are placed wisely to guide the reader through the book by showing them how ideas progress, relate, and, or diverge. The two-section book is laid out in a familiar format—the first section spells out “this is culture”, and the second section spells out “this is what you should do to change it.”This is definitely a book that is easy to follow. The details fit together logically, the pace slows down to spotlight important points or ideas and speeds up to where necessary to move the reader along. The authors care about school culture—and it shows. The tone is very straightforward, congenial, and professional. One can feel the author convictions, authority, and integrity.The book is definitely told in a way that makes the reader want to listen. They have carefully considered what the education leader, or any other interested school employees, knows, and the best way to share a fascination with the subject, feelings about school culture, and opinions about why a culture is the most important aspect of any school organization—it can mean triumph or defeat.School culture is not something new—but the way the writers express culture through new ways make the book interesting and original. The writing is crisp and clear. Distinct words and just-right phrases round out the completeness of the book.Active descriptions give the piece punch and pizzazz. The book does have its limited jargon, but this is necessary and infrequent. All unusual words are defined and illustrated, making sure the reader is clearly in the driver;s seat and never a passenger. The piece is full of energy and the sights and sounds of active, vivacious school systems.Words capture the reader’s imagination and enhance the meaning of culture. There are a definite and deliberate attempt to use the best words and sentences that come to mind. Carefully and creatively crafted sentences enhance impact. If the book were read out loud, it would be easy on the ear.The book has a typical font with rustic-type paper that should probably be read in a better-than-average lighting system. It seems to be the typical bookshelf off-white color that may provide a near-sterile quality if the writing was average, or less than average at best. The writing overcomes the shortfall of its legibility.The book could definitely use some charts and graphs, and even more importantly, videos from CDs or Web-access materials that would give the book more depth for readers to see school culture in action—for better or worse.The authors eventually sum up their thinking in a natural, thoughtful, and convincing way. The conclusion anticipates and answers any lingering questions the reader may have providing a strong sense of closure.

It is refreshing to read about the influence that culture has on the success of the school. We have known for years but it is important that the leaders have a guide highlights this!All stakeholders are the focus! For example: the author stresses the importance of respect among all stakeholders and it's effects on the overall school culture.They focus on the importance of transforming toxic cultures. It is often that we forget the effects our attitudes and actions have on those around us. But when we create a toxic culture, we are effecting all of those around us and even deterring new educators from becoming a part of or even staying in the field of education. This is detrimental to the field of education and this is where this guide is needed.The words seem to flow off the pages and before you know it, the end is near! It is an informative, insightful piece that provides leaders with a guide that points them in the right direction when they are trying to increase the success of their school. A successful culture is a happy culture!But there is more to this book then culture, this is also a guide that helps leaders deal with many situations that are uncomfortable such as test scores and their effect on the overall culture.A must read for educators, leaders, administrators, parents and anyone who has any ties to the field of education. The world of education would be more harmonious and successful if more people took the time to read and internalize all of the knowledge the author has created from beginning to end!

Shaping School Culture is a good book written for those in leadership positions within school systems. I have read many books on the importance of nurturing culture in schools, but this book is very different from others. The author uses stories to show how artifacts, routines, symbols, history, tales, rituals, ceremonies, and traditions can shape the culture of an organization. The book is divided into two sections: The Elements of Culture and The Symbolic Role of School Leaders. I found the second section to be of much greater use and more interesting to read. In this section, the author provides specific actions that can be taken to promote a positive culture, whereas the first section is much more philosophical. If you are looking to completely overhaul the culture in your school, or if you are just looking for small ways to promote a more positive atmosphere, this book can be a helpful, thought-provoking resource.

As a 4th year teacher, I now feel like I have the big overview of what is necessary. Thankfully I am a fellow for Teaching Trust in Dallas, Texas that also has the big picture in mind. I read this book a few weeks before that nonprofit assigned its fellows its Campus Action Plan on classroom culture. I am so glad I have this book to support my work and to tie it all together in terms of working with my administrators to make not only my classroom culture better but the entire school's culture better too!
