This is the most informative and disturbing book I have ever read. It appears to be extremely well researched and documented, though I didn’t check out the accuracy of the footnotes. Some takeaways: (1) The Rothschilds, the Morgans, the Rockefellers, and a few others, control this country, most of its media and its significant politicians, through their control of a cartel deceptively called the Federal Reserve System. (2) The same Rothschilds, and others, control other major economic powers through parallel control of their central banks, media, and politicians. (3) Despite our “Founding Fathers’” vehement opposition to any central bank or government-issued paper money, their efforts to ban it constitutionally have been circumvented. (4) Politicians, with few exceptions, cannot resist the appeal of being able to issue “fiat” (not backed by anything of value, therefore being able to be produced in ever expanding masses until that particular economy eventually collapses) money, because it seems much less painful than levying taxes, and virtually none of their electorate realize that its issuance enables the politicians to spend much more than they could ever raise through taxation while at the same time reducing the value of the citizens’ savings, salaries, pensions, etc. (5) “Fractional reserves” enable banks to loan out close to 10 times the value of their real assets, dramatically increasing the amount of ever-increasing currency in circulation and proportionately cheapening its currency (therefore up to 10 times the country’s recently doubled national debt), and to earn interest on each of those multiples loaned. (6) The Rothschilds and their fellow collaborators have learned that nothing inspires a country to engage in the massive issuance of fiat money like war, and they have therefore helped develop and funded “enemy” powers where none existed, then fostered wars among them, then financed both sides of those wars, then used their control of media to entice the ignorant public into believing in those wars, and reaped huge spoils from those wars, not only in interest on loans, but in lucrative commercial monopolies received for their troubles. (7) Groups of greedy (understatement) “idealists” (of which Cecil Rhodes may be considered a prime initiator) began before World War I working toward a single, socialist/communist autocratic world government which would impose the wonders of the elitist British culture on all the world (including the Fabians and, in the US, members of the Council on Foreign Relations) which they, of course, would control. (8) The economic and military strength of the US makes it difficult to subjugate to such a plan, so they need it (through its banks) to, i.a., make massive “loans” (with no expectation of principal repayment but with government [US taxpayers] guarantees) to less affluent countries, thereby dramatically economically and militarily weakening the US while distributing its wealth (on which they collect interest) to the less developed nations with examples like the US’s recent funding of Mexican drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico, and Brazil’s drilling for oil off its coast, while refusing to allow US drilling in the Gulf for “environmental” reasons, and blocking two pipelines that would have been environmentally far safer and better for the US economy and national security. Of course, this should be required reading in every high school and college, but then, consider the odds that such an idea would even be considered in the US “academic” institutions of today.I just went back and skimmed the 1-star and 2-star reviews, looking for a scholarly refutation of the author's arguments and analysis,. A few said they disagreed, or that the author Cherry picked, but offered nothing more. If all this we're refutable, wouldn't someone have done so?

As a former ex-USSR citizen, I always wondered why wars were fought. Every molecule of my brain refused to believe that people did it for pure altruistic and patriotic reasons. This book puts it right:* Why America fought in WW1* Why Russian revolutions occurred and who benefited from those* Why people in other countries are so gullible when receiving foreign aid.* How the large bankers took advantage of those countries by legalizing smuggling, just for them, not the common folkAnd most importantly:* How the common US folk is paying for all of it out of its own pocket through the hidden tax of inflation.A true eye opener. Gotta love America for letting a writer publish such an indispensable journey into history political deceit. Other countries like Russia would have probably made the author disappear, the way it has always been done.A word of caution:This book may make you angry. However please do understand that everything it talks about happened, happens, and will continue to happen so long as the earth is populated. Just accept it and find a way to be prepared for the future, as the past always repeats itself.

As a middle-aged American citizen this is by far the most important and pivotal book that I have read and will probably read in my lifetime.Every single page contains an " oh my God " moment, and the reader will understand why America has been the way it has in the past, where it is now, and why there is a reset coming that can be stopped by no one or anything save an act of God.The Federal Reserve of The United States of America is neither Federal nor a reserve of anything aside from evil and tyranny, and is the single most destructive entity in the history of the nation. It is anathema to humanity, God, and America. It is the polar opposite of The Constitution, it was warned about in the Constitution, and it is the reason why many including JFK have perished for trying to remove it. America and many other nations will be truly healthy and free until central banking and central bankers are permanently removed. If you are interested in critical thinking and want to really understand why things are happening and who really controls our world, I strongly suggest that you read this book. You will never forget the lessons that it teaches.

Fascinating and eye-opening!! If you want to understand what's really going on with our economy, the Fed, and the role of governments in monetary policy, you'll definitely want to make the time investment to read this. I do not find conspiracy theories intriguing - I take no delight in them. In fact, criminals colluding together in secret to commit acts of evil make my blood boil! This book is a well-written expose. It is the farthest thing from conspiracy theory - it's well-documented and insightfully written. In a world where truth is hard to find, this book is a breath of fresh air. If you are a seeker of truth, you will definitely find it in these pages. Just know that the old Bible verse is right - "with much wisdom is much sorrow, as knowledge increases, grief increases." You're not gonna like what you read, but you will better off for knowing this material!

If you don't read this book at least twice you will not have the foggiest idea how our economic system got to where it is. You will not understand how to fix it before the next economic crash occurs. The Federal reserve was created to control the monetary system for the group who came to Jeckyll Island Georgia. Their decendants continue through the Federal Reserve System to control the money supply today.

I have studied the Holocaust for over 30 years. Logon's book contains many insights that were new to me. I strongly urge anyone interested in knowing what went on day-to-day in the camps in Germany, to buy this book. It is excellent and so insightful. You will not be disappointed. However, there is one statement on page 312 that is simply not true. He comments, "When the camps were liberated there were virtually no instances in which prisoners committed excesses against captured SS men." A recent book by John McManus entitled "Hell Before Their Very Eyes" states numerous examples of inmate retribution in Dachau, Buchenwald, and Ohrdruf. It seems obvious that this would happen and in my mind, was totally justified behavior.

This is not a book for light reading, because Mr. Kogon goes into the depths of the horrors a prisoner in the Nazi Concentration Camps was subjected to. While I readily give this book 5 stars, I also warn that it is not really for the faint of heart, because no punches are pulled and the reader learns just what a bunch of real bastards the SS were. You come away wondering just to what depths of depravity a person can sink to after reading some of Kogon's eyewitness accounts of man's inhumanity to man. Please, read this book! I hope you come away with the same feeling I did: We must NEVER let this happen again!

Only giving this 3 stars, as it is not as "readable" as similar books I have just read. "NIGHT" by Elie Wiesel, "AUSCHWITZ" a doctor's eyewitness by Miklos Nyiszli, and "Doctors from Hell" by Vivian Spitz. All three were difficult to put down, and I would give them 5 stars each. This book, which is incredibly detailed, is not an easy read. The level of detail is what makes it dry and hard to stay with. The author includes lots of names of prisoners , SS officers etc., which tends to bog things down. I have given up on it twice but am committed to finish this book!Just a note to the publisher, a number of pages have double-print/shadow lines, which were not easy to read so I just skipped those pages all together. I will review again once I have finished the book.

Well written and documented history of the Nazi concentration camps. Eugen Kogon, a German political prisoner in WWII, worked as a guard in the Buchenwald prison camp. As a Nazi-resister, he enabled Stéphane Hessel to escape certain death by switching his identity with that of a dead prisoner. After the concentration camps were liberated, Kogon provided the Allies with information on the organization of the camps. The detailed descriptions of how the camps were organized may shock the reader but The Theory and Practice of Hell is as relevant today as when written in 1950.

Immediately after the end of World War II, the Americans wanted a report of how the German concentration camps worked and appointed a committee made up of inmates from Buchenwald concentration camp to document the administrative aspect of the camps. Eugen Kogon, a writer and political activist, headed the committee and within four weeks produced what became a go-to document for the Nuremberg trials and a respected explanation of camp administration. The book expands the original report and each chapter covers a specific aspect of the camp, e.g., Daily Routine, Discipline and Scientific Experiments. Kogon is careful to stay objective in his reporting, even when he describes how the Germans beat, starved, tortured and worked inmates to death. He touches on how the prisoners reacted to the camp and how they became numb to their treatment, a by-product of the all-encompassing terror they experienced.“The Theory and Practice of Hell” is the most thorough accounting I have found that explains how the Germans ran the concentration camps and I would urge anyone who has asked themselves “How did they do this on such a grand scale?” to read the book.

Book is a little disturbing but Eugen Kogon's expert testimony were used in the Nuremburg Trials so historically his recollections are invaluable.

VERY INTERESTING......LOTS OF INFORMATION TO TAKE IN BUT GIVES US A CLEARER IDEA OF WHAT THEY WERE LIKE

Excellent historical document. Had some difficulty at times with the translations.

I fell in love with Reade myself. He is everything a true man in love should be. Sweet, loving, protective, funny, caring and being handsome doesn’t hurt. Elizabeth was a weak woman in body and spirit. But with Read she learned to become strong and full of spirit, like she told him, show me once and I can do it. I really loved this book and I can’t wait for Aiden’s story. March can’t come soon enough

Ok, it was a good book....but.....way to long and enduring. It became burdensome to finish. I finished it, and it all made sense. But I wanted to drop tht teenage pain in the ass chick back on English soil about 1/2way there. She became so annoying. There was no depth to her character. It’s like her head was full of rock salt. Very hard to finish this book

Ms. Morrison creates a story that will tug at your heartstrings. Combine an alpha Scots warrior with a feisty English lass and the chemistry is very steamy. The developing love and threat of loss leaves you turning the pages as fast as you can. The history is "light", but the theme of English-Scottish tension during the reign of Edward I and Robert the Bruce carries the story's line to a satisfactory conclusion. I can't wait for the next book in the series. This was a terrific read for a rainy afternoon and I completed it in one reading. I highly recommend this book.

Enjoyed Reads and Elizabeth story. Glad she found out what her Uncle was about , that she got away . Went North because in her Dreams when she was sick , her mother told her to look north. Will she get where she going ? Or will her Uncle catch up with her ? Reade be able to protect her? Loved Reade and Elizabeth together ❤. Scottish historical romance one my favorites. Look forward to reading more books from Anne Morrison.

The story wasn't bad and kept my interest, but sadly the typos and layout were distracting. It was easy to tell the book had been digitized quickly and that distracted from the story, for me.

I enjoyed the characters. There were twists and turns throughout the story which made it interesting. There were a few lulls in the book but they didn't last long. Stay with it until the end and you'll see an interesting ending.

What a great story! Lots of action, and romance. You can just feel the cool breezes and see the beauty of the Highlands, and who can just decide on 1 handsome Scottish Highlander?! You'll enjoy Elizabeth and Reade's story with it's interesting twists! Anne Morrison writes a great read!

This book lost me at times by saying one thing and then a little later saying something else. You had a very good plot. I think the author did a great job except for the wishy-washy

Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond is an important book that I suspect will be referred to for many years in sociology classes across the nation. In this book, the author takes people into some of the poorest neighborhoods of America and what it means to be evicted. This book follows along with real people who live in the 'hood and what puts them in precarious financial situations so as to be dealing with unscrupulous landlords. Some of the tenants have problems with drugs, low paying jobs, a lack of child support, child delinquency, physical and mental disabilities and other similar social problems. As for the landlords, they are shown to be smarter than we think they are. They know who they can make the most money off of and they employ a variety of schemes to make money off of the poor. We also see how some tenants abuse the properties where they live, so landlords know that they are often taking a gamble when buying houses - even derelict properties - and renting them out to certain types of tenants. We also learn about how the government plays a role in all of this behavior. This is a well written book. There is strong language but it's the way that people speak, so it's not for show.Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for writing an honest review. I did not receive any other compensation.

I have been involved with low income housing in Milwaukee for over three decades as a landlord and as an attorney for landlords and tenants. I know the neighborhoods and characters in this book all too well. If you want insight into poor people’s lives as they struggle to keep a roof over their heads, you should buy this book. The other reviews are right about how gripping those stories are. But if you are a graduate of Trump University and think you’ll get some insight into how to make obscene profits by renting to the poor you’ll find anecdotes but no real verified research about the business of landlording. Most significantly, you will not learn the truth that bringing evictions totally destroyed the rental business of Sherrena, the leading landlord protagonist.Strangely, though Desmond interviewed 30 landlords he only focuses on two. One is Tobin, a mobile home park operator on Milwaukee’s south side, which is largely white and Hispanic. Tobin indeed makes a lot of money but that is because he does not have to maintain or repair 95% of the “dwellings” in his park. Tobin rents out a concrete slab with utility connections and the tenants buy or bring their own trailers and pay their own utilities. As owners they are responsible for the exterior and interior condition of their dwelling. Only 5% of the trailers are owned by the park and rented to tenants as a living unit. So Tobin is a landlord only in the sense that you might have a landlord this summer when you drive your Winnebago to a Jellystone Park and pay rent for the parking pad and utility hookups. Then we have Sherrena who with her husband runs about 18 buildings (mostly two-family flats) in the African-American neighborhoods on the north side of Milwaukee. In a chapter titled “The ‘Hood is Good” Desmond blithely accepts Sherrena’s boast that she has a net worth of $2 million and nets $10,000 a month in rental income. Desmond is honest in portraying the many difficulties Sherrena has in collecting rent from her struggling tenants but he doesn’t do the background research (available from local court records) about the many thousands of dollars in unpaid rents and damaged units which sort of cut into profits a little bit.As to her supposed net worth of $2 million, that averages out to $111,000 for each of these 18 ghetto properties - certainly far more than some of the real dumpy ones are worth – but the author does not research the amounts of the recorded mortgages against these properties (ranging between $64,000 and $119,200) which further greatly reduce the claimed net worth. That would have been revealed in the many foreclosures filed against Sherrena’s properties which started within a year after Desmond’s visit to Milwaukee. So when this book came out in 2016 the curious reader might want to know: if the ‘hood is good for the landlord how much better has it gotten since the author did his study in 2009? Research so far shows that not one of Sherrena’s properties remains in her ownership. Starting in 2010 many were bulldozed, went into city ownership via foreclosure for nonpayment of real estate taxes or today sit as haunting, blighted eyesores. A few were foreclosed by lenders, were fixed up and are under new ownership. Evictions by Sherrena ended in the year 2010. So did her non-existent profit. She joins many small-time under-capitalized landlords who have gone bust in Milwaukee and elsewhere since the Great Recession started in 2008 with the bursting of the housing bubble. Please note that I still give the book 4 stars. Its significant defects in reporting on the “profit” aspect of its subtitle are outweighed by the important and detailed research on the effects of eviction in creating and perpetuating poverty. A better and expanded housing voucher program for low income tenants is much needed. Landlords nationwide should join Matt Desmond’s call for its implementation.

"Evicted" is the story of eight families in Milwaukee, WI--six families struggling mightily to pay the rent on their increasingly crappy apartments, and two sets of landlords. The landlords are either a new breed of venture capitalists or merely slumlords, depending on your perspective. Since roughly 2000, rents have shot up while the properties have either stayed the same or declined, so that by 2013 about one out of every three poor families spent seventy percent of their income on housing. Think about that for a minute. As a result of this, poor families are always one crisis--really one unexpected expense--away from being evicted. The ramifications of being evicted on one's emotional, financial, and physical states are profound. First, once someone gets evicted, finding any kind of housing becomes extremely difficult--one of the ladies called 90 apartments before she found one that would take her and her two kids. You can place blame on these struggling families if you want to, but the fact of the matter is it's extraordinarily difficult for them to succeed, or even to just get by.I found this book very interesting--to say I enjoyed it would be wrong because much of it is depressing. It made the problems of the urban poor personal. I quite liked some of them and I was rooting for them--"Please, let this landlord call her back!" I felt bad when Vanetta went to prison for armed robbery after her hours were cut, and I cheered when Scott finally got clean. I read it all the way through the endnotes, which are also quite interesting and provide some insights or background info. I really wanted to find out how all the families were doing today (the book takes place in 2008-2009) because I became attached to them and had come to care about them. Unfortunately the author doesn't tell you what became of them, although if I had to guess I'd say their lives continued on in more or less the same vein.A word on the swearing: this is a well written, professionally done sociological study. The author only uses swears when he's quoting one of the people he interviewed. If you were desperate, poor, depressed and angry, you, too might be given to curse words. If you enjoy sociological and/or cultural topics, if you care about equality in America, if you are interested in how grinding poverty affects families, pick this up. I learned a lot.
