Tom Schimmer is an author and a speaker with expertise in assessment, grading, leadership, and behavioral support. Tom is a former district-level leader, school administrator, and teacher. As a district-level leader, he was a member of the senior management team responsible for overseeing the efforts to support and build the instructional and assessment capacities of teachers and administrators. Tom is a sought-after speaker who presents internationally for schools and districts. He has worked extensively throughout North America, as well as in Vietnam, Myanmar, China, Thailand, Japan, India, Qatar, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates. He earned a teaching degree from Boise State University and a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of British Columbia. Garnet Hillman is an educator, coach, writer, presenter, and learner. She was a Spanish teacher at Lockport Township High School and currently serves as an instructional coach at Caruso Middle School, both in Illinois. She consults around the country on the topics of assessment, grading, and student motivation. A passionate educator, Garnet values student learning above all else. Garnet has published writing within Assessment 3.0 by Mark Barnes and What Connected Educators Do Differently by Todd Whitaker, Jeffrey Zoul, and Jimmy Casas. The success and excitement spread to be a schoolwide initiative the following year, eventually leading to the elimination of letter grades three years later. Mandy works with a wide variety of teachers, undergraduate students, and school districts to improve assessment and grading practices to maximize communication and student success. She provides rationale for the need for change in our current grading practices, as well as practical steps for implementation. Specifically, this book purposefully & deliberately outlines how to sustain the movement away from outdated and harmful grading practices and towards those that accurately communicate and promote student learning and growth. A must own for any grading for learning reformist, and/or stakeholder in education!

SUCH a great read! As an educator, I've been looking for a "how to" book that is doable. This is it!

I appreciated that the authors provided the rational for standards based learning and provided practical tips for how to get there. This book doesn't feel preachy, but instead provides options for teachers in the classroom. Wherever you might be on your teaching and assessment journey, there is something in this book for you.

The book is outstanding. We moved to standards-based grading this year so this book is assisting us in our continuous learning process. The first chapter, Standards Based learning in action, is outstanding. I love the section on creating a standards-based classroom: communicating the standards and learning targets, explaining why they are important, and involving students in the learning process. At our school, we wanted to align our instruction, assessment, and grading. This book shows you the way! The next few chapters break down high-leverage strategies like formative assessment, feedback, and self-assessment. The author discusses the research behind each strategy, details each action step, and gives steps to get started. Chapter 8 is about redos, retakes, and reassessment. The gives steps and suggestions for talking to parents, getting started, and questions for learning teams. I love Chapter 9 on Proficiency Scales and rubrics in action. I highly recommend this book.

Great book! I appreciate that it was written from teachers to teachers with tons of examples that I could use immediately. This is a must read for all educators.

A well written insightful story that reveals a great deal about the human psyche and how we cope with "belonging". Clearly told, with great reflection, regarding the author's discovery that his dad wasn't his biological father. Quite moving. The story deals with the struggle the author had following the surprise revelation following a DNA test, and how he goes about learning about his newly discovered bio father, all while attempting to be considerate of his 95 year old mother's feelings. A wonderful "human" story. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

I read about this book before it came out. I was excited to read it. I read it straight through at one sitting. As an adoptee who reunited on my maternal side 33 years ago and still seeking my paternal side, I was constantly frustrated with the author. I understand he was stunned, disappointed, grieving and considerate of other peoples feelings. However, I found it exasperating that he didn't actually look at the genetic information right in front on him. He gave a distant cousin a flippant response instead of realizing that a real live person can provide so much more information than geneology records, pictures and locations of relatives. He imagines what a Father's day would be like if he actually got to spend it with his biofather. However, he has an opportunity to communicate, make a connection and possibly a relationship with his siblings and other paternal relatives but he cops out instead. It seemed like a codependent response and doesn't even give anyone else the opportunity to make a choice for themself. Furthermore he is concerned about his Mother's feelings and reputation but writes this book which reveals her "secret" to the world! He never even asks her if it was an ongoing relationship or affair or even if it was consensual! Sorry Mr. Griffeth, you are just at the tip of the iceberg imho of knowing where you came from and who you are! Do more than use your imagination! Take a leap of faith and find out what your paternal family is really all about! Furthermore, you mention how much you enjoy your relationship with your cousin, Doug, who was relinquished and reunited! You are NOT even giving anyone in your paternal family the opportunity to have this with you!

I started reading this wonderful memoir and had to put my life on hold until I reached the end. As an avid genealogist myself I love the way the various strands of the family story are woven together. I wept with empathy and laughed at the twists and turns. Highly recommended!

I could not put this book down. I felt the turmoil and pain, the love and compassion, and ultimately, the acceptance that while one truly never knows what curve balls life will casually toss your way.... that there are treasures to be found, if you choose to look. I was extremely moved by your journey, Bill. You've done your family...all of them...proud.

As a genealogist I found this book fascinating .Good for him to pursue the question. As a nurse I helped with the conception of many children through the use of donor sperm. I wonder how many of their parents fear that DNA will unveil their family secret if they made it so.Thanks to Ancestry an 87 year old cousin who recently found out her aunt was really her mother found me, and was able to fill in family history on the father she never knew..

Well written and engaging tale that was unnecessarily lengthened to fill the pages of a book. I was compelled to buy this book after reading a teaser article in the magazine "American Ancestors". Actually, the whole story could have been told in a few more pages in the same article and it would have probably been better. Although I am an avid genealogist I found myself skipping through the unrelated chapters on his Griffeth family history because I just wanted to get to the rest of the story. This book is NOT a waste of time. It is a riveting story, well told ... but in too many words over too many pages.Despite this... it is a very quick read and I would recommend it to anyone who is genealogically inclined.

Virginia Woolf's unique method of storytelling -- at least in her most famous works -- may not appeal to everyone, but those who make an honest attempt to understand what she is trying to achieve will recognize the brilliance of her technique. The problem is, in the U.S., not all of the works contained within it have entered the public domain. It may be premature to review a book I've only read a fraction of (it's very long) but I was delighted to find Woolf's essays as well as her novels, and A Writer's Diary too. I am thrilled to have this rich collection. So far, I've read The Voyage Out, her first published novel, which I've never read, and selections from The Common Reader I, which I read a long time ago. I postpone re-reading my old favorites, but I know I'll get there. Woolf isn't to everyone's taste, but this is a bonanza if she is.

This was a great compilation of some of the world's greatest writings. One of the books I would take to a desert island. I'm using the Kindle version to accompany me reading the book in Italian so I can look up words I don't know in the English version as I go along.

Very informative for single source for photograph history and critique. I particularly like reading the book in Kindle software because it allows me to Google photographer images directly from the text.I would recommend this book to any aspiring photographer.

This book is a must have. It should be in every University library and on every individual's bookshelf. Why does a photographer want an education, formal or otherwise? Alone, there are so many quotable statements here and although there is some referencing, the view points from an eclectic group of experts are priceless.

This book has essays on photography by famous photographers in the mid-20th Century. An excellent read for anyone interested in the history of photography.

Esoteric... at best.

Solid and thorough writing

This book contains articles written by many photographers and critics. As a result there is a wide variety of quality.

Excellent collection of extracts and excerpts from established photographic practitioners, essayists, and educators, a great book for a beginner's photography course. Touches on a number of related issues including the image-making process, the role of photography in the arts and society, photography criticism, fundamentals of successful art practice, and the role and function of the educator, among others. Weaknesses of this collection include several frustratingly short extracts, the absence of images to support or exemplify the text, and the near total absence of opinion from anywhere outside the borders of the USA.

If a photographer might think that a picture is worth 10,000 words, why would one need a book of words about photography? Wouldn't a few well chosen photographs have obviated the need for this book? Probably not, because the aforesaid major premise is probably wrong, or at least overstated. There are some concepts that are so complex that they can't be expressed in pictures. That presumably was the thought of the editors.In his introduction Charles Traub, who is the chair of the School of Visual Arts' department devoted to photography, says that the world of photography has changed in recent years and that the writings included in the book are designed to prepare the fine arts student to enter into the world of contemporary photography. In order to do this the authors have divided the book into four parts: "Reflections on the Medium: What It Means to Photograph; How Others See Them: Considering the Photographer; Finding an Audience: Working with the Professionals; and Guide for the Uneducated: Higher Education and Photography. Each Section contains several short essays ranging from less than a half page to 11 pages. Although the editors disavow any idea of providing photographic instruction, the piece by Henri Cartier-Bresson comes the closest to instruction. On the other hand, the piece by Dave Eggers, in which he describes the thoughts running through the mind of a young women waiting to take a gritty but artistic photograph might be interesting to a creative writing student, and while a bit of fun, does not seem to be useful to a photographer. The interview with Charlotte Cotton, a museum photography curator, seemed the most accurate and insightful description of the current photographic art market. For me the most useful piece was an outline of how to critique a photograph by Ralph Hattersley.The Amazon star system is not useful in the evaluation of a book like this. The readings in this book are a mixed bag. I suspect that most photographers, including those earning a living from their work, will find little to benefit them here, although they may find some of the articles of interest. On the other hand, for the individual earning a Master of Fine Arts in Photography, and interested in entering into the contemporary art photography market, the essays may prove useful.If they have not done so already, those who want to read more about photography, with an emphasis on its history as well as its philosophy might do better to read an old classic, "Photography in Print: Writings from 1816 to the Present" by Vicki Goldberg.
