Barrel-Aged Stout and Selling Out: Goose Island, Anheuser-Busch, and How Craft Beer Became Big Business, by Josh Noel

Review

"If you care about great beer and great storytelling, this book is essential reading. Josh Noel gives us a fresh look at a fascinating business, laced with new details, sharply drawn characters, and high stakes. Barrel-Aged Stout and Selling Out is deeply reported and always a delight to read."—Jonathan Eig, author of Ali and Luckiest Man “Josh Noel has accomplished the very rare trick of telling a fascinating story that reveals the larger world it inhabits—in this case, how craft beer went from underdog to unlikely sensation. This is an essential book for anyone interested in beer, and also a really fun read.” —Jeff Alworth, author of The Beer Bible   “A well-researched and well-written book about the most exciting and dynamic era in America’s commercial beer history since Prohibition. I couldn’t put it down and I shared it with a co-worker as soon as I finished reading it.” —Sam Calagione, founder of Dogfish Head Brewery, author of Brewing Up a Business and Project Extreme Brewing “A thorough and compelling look at craft beer's wild history and complicated future. As an early brewpub sibling to Goose Island, I can easily say there's a detailed story here worth digging into." —John Hickenlooper, Colorado governor and former owner of Wynkoop Brewing   “Josh Noel deftly details the facts and passions surrounding one of the most contentious defections in craft beer history. Behind it, he shows us the dramatic story of two men—father and son—whose journey from struggling start-up to global beer brand changed both beer menus and industry loyalties in ways that will be talked about for decades to come.” —Ray Daniels, founder of the Cicerone Certification Program and author of Designing Great Beers    “Josh Noel tells the story of Goose Island founder John Hall and his son, Greg, with sympathy and understanding, leaving the reader to decide if it is a triumph for craft brewers, a tragedy for the craft movement, or both.” —Steve Hindy, cofounder of Brooklyn Brewery and author of Beer School A "briskly written narrative ... (an) accessible introduction to the business of brewing." —Wall Street Journal “Fans of good beer will enjoy Noel’s explorations, which make for a useful cautionary tale as well.” —Kirkus Reviews“I also found myself appreciating, as I tucked into the book, that it functions both as a history and as an illuminating look into how the world’s largest beer conglomerate tends to do business...in the course of reading, I was entertained and informed in equal measure.”  —Jim Vorel, Paste  “The book is, beyond its many amazing revelations, quite a page-turner. Because Noel interviewed so many people (107 names are listed, and a note mentions there were additional anonymous sources), there’s real personality throughout.” — Jeff Alworth, Beervana.com"Noel tells Goose Island’s story through the receipts, the sales numbers, the emails, and the time-stamped text messages, delivering what is, in retrospect, a clear look at big beer’s bungled first attempt to take over craft brewing” and adds “He covers tons of ground, but keeps enough of an eye on the humanity of Goose’s story that his book is more than a novel-length business study.” — Karl Klockars, Chicago magazine"Noel's book is a must-read for any craft beer fan, beer media personnel and of course anyone in beer —macro or craft." — PorchDrinking.com"You will better understand the battle for craft beer's soul that began when Goose Island was sold when you close the last page of the book...this is a must-read history for any fan, casual or obsessed, of beer." — The Full Pint

This book is just amazing and I highly recommend it. The research of the history of beer in America and the details on how beer has evolved since Goose Island’s founding is incredible. While there are many great takeaways, even the people who are purely anti “Big Beer” can’t deny Goose Island’s impact on the craft beer industry. Just seeing the people who have come through Goose Island and the breweries those people have built or impacted in some way - New Glarus, Perennial, Off Color, Fremont, Side Project, Firestone Walker, Revolution - tells you that Goose Island has had a positive impact on American beer. And as a marketing and PR person, reading about behind-the-scenes strategies was an added benefit. Was not expecting to get some great marketing takeaways when I decided to purchase this book. Thanks for writing this Josh. It was great to see the history of how everything has evolved. I absolutely flew through it and I’m already recommending it to friends.

If you are even marginally interested in the current/recent dynamic between the independent craft beer business and the big boys this book is an absolute must read. The book is very well researched and yet is an easy read. I follow the business a bit but I learned a lot about the inner workings. This is a subject worthy of a back story and the author does it beautifully. He also does not take sides. After reading it is clearly up to the reader to reach their own conclusions about who is the good guy. I won't spoil the book; but if you love beer you'll love this one!

Being a home brewer with a long time interest in beers, I've had some general ideas of how the industry works and it's primary players, mostly formed by bits and pieces of news and other scattered information. This book paints a very clear and comprehensive picture of who, what, where, and reveals more of the stories and motivations behind the snippets that have been presented to the public. If you consume and care about beer, this book will give you a greater appreciation for what you are drinking and how it got to you. Even if you don't have any interest in beers, you will find this book to be a captivating narrative about small business, big business, and all the interesting characters and events that turned a simple shelf of Bud Miller Coors into an entire aisle of Bud Miller Coors with a multitude of different labels.

I loved reading about the history of the craft beer revolution from Goose Island’s perspective in the new book from Josh Noel. John Hall’s journey, Greg Hall’s rise, the early brewpub, and the story of Bourbon County Stout. It’s all so fascinating. What I enjoy the most is the incorporation of craft beer’s historical cast of characters from around the world that each offer a bit of color to an already enthralling tale. To see familiar names and what they have to say about Goose Island gives its story even more depth. All of it is presented in an informed and objective way by Noel, who does a good job of providing well-researched facts and great details that help paint a picture of the time, place, and people behind Goose Island’s ascendancy. The work Noel put in to find out the real story and tell it in a way that anyone could understand deserves recognition. The author lets us as the reader see the people behind the story for who they really are and made them relatable humans. A great read!

How did they go from being one of America’s best breweries to being a brewery prominently featured in every Buffalo Wild Wings and airport bar in the world? You’ll find out in this excellent book. It’s a tragic tale of a brewery becoming what they always hated.

The book is split into 2 parts that tell the rise of Goose Island and then the fallout from the selling of the brewery to ABI and how it effected the employees of Goose Island and the craft beer landscape overall. The author has a great way of giving the reader the relevant information without laboring a point. He is also adept at showing the events in the book from multiple sides: the Goose Island employees, the Halls, ABI executives as well as influential folks in the craft beer world. A great read and I highly recommend it.

This was a real treat to read. As a highly critical beer drinker who was a patron at Goose Island from the beginnings, Josh Noel's carefully researched account captures the essence of the rise, expansion, and sell off of many of the most recognized crafts beers. It is told in the setting of the beer industry, however it is as much a chronical of the consolidation of industry in the world economy. This is much more than a book about beer. I especially enjoyed how Noel discusses the forces and setting for the craft beer revolution, and the history of bland American lagers. It is entertaining, thorough, and written with a colorful tone. One of the best non-fiction works I have read in years.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know that much about the beer business, and my taste in beer itself would hardly be called adventurous. Also, usually, I read novels, but I picked this book up on the recommendation of a friend. Turns out it's a fascinating and well-told story. It seems strange to call a non-fiction book like this a "page turner," but that's what this book is! I highly recommend it.

#66,029 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This was the first book to confront an issue that society wanted to hide away in the privacy of people's homes - how to deal with death. It was written in the late 1960s, but its findings are as relevant today as ever.It became a textbook read in every medical school in the world, and its messages informed a generation of those responsible for institutional end-of-life care.I bought it for background reading during research I needed to do to write a history of the hospice in my hometown in New Zealand, New Plymouth. It's incredibly informative, and I can see how it would radically change approaches in the western world's hospices and medical wards. The sad thing is the author's name has disappeared from the reference lists of modern texts on this topic, and I suspect for a bizarre reason. When she was in her 90s, Kubler-Ross wrote a last book on the subject of whether there is an after-life.She was convinced one exists, after observing what happened to blind patients who suffered a near-death event and despite their lack of vision were able to describe what members of the life-saving crash team wore. She interviewed many patients with similar stories to tell, which persuaded her that something existed for us after we departed this life. But her views were debunked, and her credibility was destroyed. The findings she made in this earlier book are strongly present in many of the books that have followed - but she gets no credit for them.It amounts to a massive case of intellectual dishonesty on the part of those who fail to recognise her fundamental contribution

Dr Kubler-Ross is a hero of mine. To the point that I did an assessment on her life and discovered a headstrong child who wanted to FEEL what life was like. She grew up in Switzerland during WWII, an identical twin in a triplet birth. She grew up unrecognised as an individual, part of the circus of attention that triplets bring. When she was 16 and the war had ended, she walked to Russia and back again, working in the reconstruction of post-war Europe. She stood in the doorway to the chambers at Maidanek, a Polish concentration camp. She looked at the wooden walls, etched with last messages and images of butterflies symbolising life after death. She met a 16 year old Jewish survivor ~ only survived because she was unable to fit into the chamber that stole the lives of her family. Elisabeth asked her about her hatred of her captors and the girl replied something about not strewing the seeds of hate, that we all have an inner Hitler when we are faced with our own mortality. With that, she went to medical school in Zurich, met an American student, married him and moved to America. She turned her focus from pediatrics to psychology, and began to notice how terminal patients were virtually ignored in hospitals ~ as though dying was something to be ashamed of. She began to visit patients, sitting with them as they talked, listening to their needs and their stories, finding that there is a wealth of wisdom in those frail people.Dr Kubler-Ross believed in the dignity of living with dying. She polished the art of listening to the needs of terminal patients, how to allow them to pass with tenderness and non-intervention. To make dying a time of preciousness and honour. She taught me how to be present for my mother when she died. When I got the call that Mama needed me, I didn't know what to do. As I packed to take the plane over land and oceans to go home to Delaware, I brought 'On Death and Dying', I brought a Ram Dass recording "Here We all Are" and a Crowded House cd with 'Fall at Your Feet'. Each one was instrumental in helping me give my mother a loving, hands-on, joyful exodus from the pain of cancer.I recommend this book highly. Not only for assisting with a peaceful death, but as a sufferer of the grief of losing someone who meant the world to me. Kubler-Ross' Five Stages eventually became a recognised Psychological Theory on the Five Stages of Grief. Worthwhile to read once, enlightening to read over and over again.

I bought this as a gift. I read the book many years ago and the information from the book has stayed with me for all these years. If you have a loved one dying, or even has died, this books story can help you. At the time I read it, I had no loved one sick or dying, I was just curious. I read and read and learned from it. I would buy again and gift to someone I care for and about. A book for a lifetime.

My wife was passing away and I needed some thoughts from people who had been there/done that. Some months down the road and My wife has passed and I can see the value of this book

My mom was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. A very good friend recommended that I read this book. It is proving to be a great aid, to help me understand the stages of dying, how the patient often copes with their challenge, and how I can be supportive in their time of need. Very strongly recommend.

Good book when I can sit down and read it. After the recent loss of my Mother, this book was recommended to me to read as a way to grieve. At this point, I’m not ready...but when I can, I will come back and do another review.

I read this book back in 1972 when I was in nursing school. I have talked about it since then and always remember how it helped me after my Dad died. This book started me on my journey reading books by Dr. Kuebler Ross. I have now been working in hospice for 17 years and refer back to the information frequently. I can not find my original copy so replaced it with the e-book and sat to read it again. It remains relevant today and I would recommend it to anyone to understand how we cope with loss. Loss does not have to be a person it could be any loss i.e. job, pet or a friendship breaking up. Reaction to any loss we follow (in any order) the five stages of grief.

Outstanding book. I started this book about a week before my 88 year old fathers passing (cancer). I finished it yesterday (11-5. He passed 10-16.) this book was hard to put away at night and gave me insight, and peace, inside the mind of a terminally illl patient. It wasn't hard to read even in my situation and because of it, I'm seriously considering volunteering with my local hospice organization.

Good book! Learned couple of good tricks from it!

I've been gluten free due to an allergy for several years now and many friends have gotten me gluten free cookbooks with the absolute best intentions and warmth in their hearts. However, the other thing my doctor told me to get off of was sugar - and gluten free cookbooks are often loaded with (2/3 or more) recipes of how to replace cakes, cookies, and breads. Now that I have been eating less sugar and more veggies, good protein, and whole (gluten free) grains, I feel great. But I couldn't find any cookbook anywhere that gave me easy recipes that also worked for those times were you are on dinner solo. Most healthy cookbooks seemed to involve eighteen ingredients, six of them available at specialty stores not in my neighborhood, three of them used one teaspoon of things only available in pints with fast expiration dates, and the others were out of my price range.Hello you sugar detox cookbook. I can look up easy main dishes/meats or make a simple soup or flip through tasty looking side dishes. If you cook at all most things will be in your kitchen and you'll stop by the store on the way home for just a fresh piece of fish or something. All recipes are fairly easy to prepare (and often quick - 1/2 hour), easy to halve for the single meals, clear substitutions for allergies, tips on where to find some less used ingredients (but then those ingredients are used several times, not just once in the cookbook - like you might have to buy coconut oil but then it is used in lots of the recipes). I wish I could describe more just how much I love this cookbook - but I've found that I can cook almost anything in it, rather than having just a few recipes I can use like most cookbooks. I like to just flip to a new side dish and try it out. You aren't stuck with things that are so odd you don't know what else to put with them. I'm actually not on the 21 day detox, I just like more healthy meals in my diet and it works great for that. It has things from Coconut Basil Halibut with Spinach to Squash Mash to Seasoned Sweet Potato Fries. Mmm mmm. Even tells you how to make your own coconut milk if you are trying to be more organic. It's actually easy. I like the kitchen again!

I hate the Kindle version of this cookbook, wish I could get an instant refund. I should have ordered the paperback format but I'm in the middle of the 21 day sugar detox, and I can't wait ten days for the cookbook to arrive - also the paperback is very expensive and not Prime eligible. But getting the Kindle edition was a sad mistake. The book does not translate well to the Kindle format. You get only a little information on each page so you have to keep scrolling and scrolling to see a full recipe. A simple four-ingredient recipe takes up three frames? This makes it difficult to quickly scroll through quickly to find a recipe, very cumbersome. And there are few pictures, don't we like to see what a recipe looks like? Also, most of the program material from the guidebook is also included here, in my opinion it just gets in the way. A definite disappointment, I guess I'll have to order the paperback via snail mail.

After eating a whole bag of Halloween candy, I knew I had a problem. I was addicted to sugar. I found this book and thought I would try it. I could do anything for 21 days. Well, it wasn't easy but it was worth it! This book has great recipes and ideas that met my craving for good food. In fact, my husband thought I was making the best meals I have made since being married. It took a lot of time to prep meals... but I have figured out some short cuts. After 21 days, I told myself I could keep up this diet. In fact, when I strayed, I felt sick and craved my healthy meals. After 6 months, I lost 35lbs. It has been about a year, and I have kept most of the weight off. I have not been as strict over the summer, but plan to go back to the 21DSD to lose 15 more lbs. This really worked for me and I recommend it to all my friends.

The book itself is good and informative. The 21-day detox is really hard, although you can lose weight on this. But, unless you change your habits, the weight will come right back, as it did for me. The one plus I took away is that there really is sugar in everything, it is amazing how much sugar we consume without realizing it.

Best decision I ever made! I lost 14 lbs in my first 21 days! Easy to follow, detailed plan.

I LOVE this book. It has great recipes. My husband and I did 30 days of sugar detox using this book, and even HE enjoyed it! We go back to it frequently when we have guests over, that's how good some of the recipes are. Highly recommend.

The recipes in this book are super delicious. I haven't been able to make too many of them, but each one I've tried has worked out really well (except for the pancakes - those were just terrible! They burned quite easily, I'm going to have to try them with a pan that doesn't get quite so hot). Other than that, they're great, easy to make, and I enjoy them immensely.

I love the recipes! I haven't made anything out of this book that wasn't fabulous! There isn't any duplicate recipes from the previous 21-Day book. Thank you Diane for such a great book!!
