Cancer and Vitamin C: A Discussion of the Nature, Causes, Prevention, and Treatment of Cancer With Special Reference to the Value of Vitamin C, Updated and Expanded, by Ewan Cameron Linus Pauling

Review

Cancer and Vitamin C explains, in plain language, the nature and known causes of cancer, covering nearly all its different forms and their natural progression. It also weighs the value and limitations of various modes of treatment: surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormones, immunotherapy, and a number of unorthodox ones. The value of vitamin C as an adjunct therapy is corroborated by detailed accounts of cancer patients who have derived varying degrees of benefit from vitamin C treatment. --Midwest Book Review

Actually I mostly bought the book for historically having one more book written by Linus, while thinking I wouldn’t get any news concerning cancer, of which I owe around 40 books, but I was gladly surprised when reading the book. For example, it was interesting to read the chapter 2, “The Causes of Cancer”, where we look back in history, starting in 1775 when Sir Percival Pott, a London surgeon, described the cancer of the scrotum that was prevalent among the adolescent chimney sweeps. And since then many other cancers were discovered, among other the “Mule-spinners cancer”, coursed by the cotton mills, lung cancer for the uranium miners, caused by the radon gas, and around 25 – 30 years ago, as I recall it, then the discovering of asbestos cancer. And concerning the asbestos cancer, as written in the book, even more alarming it was as it also resulted in cancer for family member having contacted the workers’ clothes. And actually first in this week, in Denmark, there now have been stated compensation payment of $ 25,000 to each of the still living cancer damaged wives. Besides in this book I first learned about working women who died by bone cancer after painting the dials on watches and clocks with radioactive paint back in 1916 to 1924. And strangely the case of skin cancer in India, caused by persons whom, for not freezing, holding a pot of glowing coals under their clothes.Among other the book is also good as we in the chapter 3, “The Common Forms of Human Cancer”, like in a lexicon reads about around 25 of the most commonly known cancers, and among other about the reason to the cancer, how to try to solve the problem for patients being hit, and the chance in survival.Especially it for me was interesting to read the sides, in the chapter 5, “The Treatment of Cancer by Surgery”, following after the words that a bigger surgery is not necessarily better surgery, and then historically looking at the surgery concerning women breast cancer. It’s awful there to read how much originally was removed from the breasts, besides the tumors, as from around the year 1900 until the 1950s, this caused by following an idea from John Hopkins Hospital. But from Scotland, just after the Second World War, then news came, and now telling only to remove the diseased breast, and then from other places, in the early 1950s, that even less had to be removed. And then finally, also in the 1950s, from Finland, results telling that more survivals followed when only the tumor was removed. But here in Chiang Mai it to me looks like they still nearly are using the tradition from the John Hopkins Hospital, as I realized it, when my Thai wife, 4 years ago, then had bout of her breasts removed, while only having a single tumor on 1/3 inches, and nothing ells. The Thai doctors in the hospital told her, after the scanning’s result, that she would have to come next day for by surgery having removing both of her breast, for else she would die within a week! I, and even an English doctor, told her that this was nonsense, but she was scared and followed the Thai doctors order. Later a doctor from Bangkok, daughter to a family she knew, here in Chiang Mai, and told her that the doctors in Chiang Mai are doing totally wrong. One, day a year later, when she returned home from control in the hospital, she told that that day 30 women were at surgery for breast cancer, and all would have both of their breasts removed. Strangely, as her surgery doctor, only around 40 years, and educated in Sweden, and where Sweden absolutely is up to date concerning doctor knowledge and work.In the book in each of the chapters 20 and 21 we from A to Z get illustrative patient cases, where we in all of the cases realize how the vitamin C actually helped, either by resulting in less, or no side-problem, living longer and even cases in being cured. In some of cases we read about persons who by emergency are brought to hospitals, and with view to die within a day, but are given 8 - 10 grams of vitamin C, then the following day are better, and after a week returned home. And at home re-continuing a normal life, for then suddenly 2 – 3 month later again getting sick, and then die within a day. But in any case by the vitamin C getting a longer and healthy finishing life. But one of the more thoughtful cases is concerning a 55-year-old wife who in 1978 became aware, when making her Japanese paintings, difficulty in coordinating her right hand. The problem increased by weakness on the right leg, difficulty in speaking and in swallowing. When she then went to Stanford Medical Center, it by scanning showed up that she had a 2.5-cm-diameter tumor lying deep in the left part of the brain. She was advised immediate operation, but told that she might be paralyzed in the right arm and leg. She then refused, scared for maybe living so in the future, and then went to another neurosurgeon, but he told the same. But a relative told her about an article she had read about vitamin C, and then the wife started on daily taking 10 grams of vitamin C, not much believing in that it would help, but scared by the thinking on being paralyzed. A month later as she was feeling a bit better, she then again when for scanning, and it showed up that the tumor had partly diminished, and deformed. Two month later scanning showed that the tumor had totally disappeared, and she was back healthy as before. The book is among other also helpful with the chapter concerning the treatment of cancer by respectively beside Surgery, also by Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy, Hormones, Immunotherapy, and Unconventional forms of cancer treatment. We there learn that each of these treatment is helpful for same cancers and without help for other. Even the “bad” Chemotherapy is advised in some cases. The book is actually a scientifically report, by showing the many results by using vitamin C, and in the appendixes, statistically putting them together. But after reading the book, which is printed 25 years ago, I wonder why nearly no researches has been made by especially the state of USA. Probably as the medical firms, which yearly are paying half of the money to FDA, don’t want this, as they can’t patent the vitamin C, and thereby earn enormous much as when having a patent.

Every cancer patient should read and study this book first. It has life saving information. A very safe method of building your immune system. You can take C and still follow your doctor's program of radiation and surgery. I read the case histories in this book carefully. You can learn a lot from them. A person who takes vitamin C before surgery and during surgery, does much better than one who does not. Why are not all doctors aware of this and using it for the benefit of their patients?

A convervative, non-hyped look at the effects of large doses of Vitamin C on various types of cancer. By two doctors with many years of hands-on experience with real patients and research. This type of work has been going on since the 30s and yet most doctors still have no idea of helpful injectable and IV ascorbate can be. I now take 6-10 grams daily, and would definitely take much more if I was ill. (Though I think the large daily doses will provide a great deal of prevention.)

Old but entirely valid research shows that VERY high doses of ascorbic acid, too high for our guts to tolerate, given I.V. do wondders to stop cancer growth and spread. Since it's a low cost option, no mega drug company has any motive for human clinical trials to "prove" its efficacy, exactly why so many cheap natural products never get fully tested...not enough profit in it.

this book has good info , my review is mostly of the medical establishment and not so much of this book , its more of a wake up call. Ive always Questioned why the "Cancer specialist" and all the foundations for cancers never can find cures. its quite sad when one studys and does research on our Medical history and who were the "elite billionaires" who owned the biggest pharmaceutical companies and also founded our American medical Association to discredit those doctors and scientist who were really searching for cures. its sad to see that we here in the "supposed" greatest country in the world we will watch a cancer patient die after radiation, chemo and drugs but we will not allow them to seek alternative medicine. its sad to see how John D Rockefeller created the American medical association that single handedly destroys those scientist who dare ruin the greatest scam ever created . its sad to see that Cancer here in the Greatest country in the world is the SECOND biggest business behind Rockefellers Pharmaceuticals. its sad to see how John D Rockfeller single handedly started "donating" millions of dollars to medical schools to brain wash medical and change the what was taught in those schools, and the others schools that dared not take a dirty nickel of rockefeller money were now a "non-credited" school ,so anything they teach is worthless. its sad to see now John D Rockefeller donated millions of dollars to the "board of education" and made our education a whole lot worse by dumbing us down totally. its sad to see most of the world is totally asleep to this and so much more of what is being done to us but yet for lack of curiosity and being dumbed down most will never figure out all this and so much more. My wife always said "Ignorance is Bliss" and she is right, the more i research an question everything and get to the truth the angrier i get . im a million times happier knowing the truth on how we really are just guinea pigs to the pharmaceutical companies and they NEVER cure a disease they just learn how control it so you can be dependent on their carefully engineered drugs for the rest of your life. its very important to know that when John D Rockefeller Created the AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION it was designed to destroy the competition which was holistic and naturopath and all other types of natural therapies which did NOT treat your illness or disease but instead actually CURED YOU. Rockefeller could not push his drugs on you if you went to natural treatments , instead he destroyed most of these colleges and the AMA did the reat of the dirty work by discrediting these doctors calling them Quacks and thus the name "ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE" was born. since these good doctors did not want to join the medical mafia they were left out to dry ,called names and not allowed to LEGALLY practice any more. thus making the normal citizen a guinea pig for life. its also sad to see how this same scum bag and his totally ultra rich freinds caused the "great depression" and when americans started investigating him and his buds he bought out most media and newspaper companies and squashed the small reporters cause now since he owned most media he was in totall control of the reporters, they could no longer report on their own boss. i could go on for days but i hope that after you read this and try and learn more about our medical institutions , not all are bad but its just a business. if cancer was allowed to be cured there would be no cancer specialist, therapist, nurses and so on and so forth.no need for drugs. look up Linus Pauling, Rene Caisse, Max Gerson, Hoxsey,ROYAL RAYMOND RIFE,Virginia livingston, and there are so many others who succeeded but didnt realize the AMA was there to stop them and many other associations to discredit them. also on the internet you have a website dedicated to brainwash you even more and its called Quackwatch which is run by supposed doctors and its main priority is to scare you into beleiving their writings.

Most of the book is easy to understand. For those who don't want to start radiation treatment or chemotherapy, an alternate treatment is available for consideration.

This is a very good book, written by two experts in their fields. Linus Pauling has the unusual honor of being a double Nobel Prize winner. His insights into heart disease and cancer are very good. His advice on nutrition is invaluable.

A must read and so interesting!

Great product at a great price! I gave my vet the 2018 calendar and he says all of his clients look at the daily pictures. Most of the clients are waiting to have their bill prepared. He said they really enjoy it and laugh or smile. I bought the 2019 calendar to give for Christmas 2018. It's very cute and funny. I bought the 2029 cat shaming calendar too this year.

My husband gets this yearly gift at Christmas from the dog. It's for his work, but everyday he rips off the new page so he can bring it home so I can have a good laugh also. For dog lovers, this is the way to go.

Bought for a colleague for Christmas. Most of the time it's cute and clever with very funny photos. Some days, not so much. Could be better. I would offer suggestions on how to improve but I don't have a dog. I have kids but apparently kid shaming is not trendy right now. Could be better

I bought this as more of a distraction for customers.I frequently have angry customers (banking) and bought this in hopes that the customer will be distracted with cute dog pictures. It works, a lot less yelling and more focus on the dogs.

This was a great gift, my daughter keeps it on her desk and tries her hardest not to sneak a peek at the next days photo. Very cute for a child who loves dogs.

This calendar is our daily morning routine we enjoy the antics of the fur babies on each day and it’s fun to see how they compare to our fur babies we have 4 all different shapes and sizes and they keep us busy. I would say this makes us smile every morning and gets our day started on the right foot.

This is a cute calender. It makes me smile every morning when I rip off the old page from the day before. You must be a dog lover to "get it". I have ordered this calender for years. Great way to start the day with a smile. Thanks!

This calendar sits on my desk at work and my co workers and I get a kick out of the different dog shames each day. We call it the "Dog Shame of the Day" and it is always sparking up a story about our own dogs and the silly and sometimes bad things that they do. Everyone can relate in some way to what these mischievous dogs get into, and it's a creative way to bring a good laugh to your day. Definitely recommend!

Avant-Garde in the Cornfields: Architecture, Landscape, and Preservation in New Harmony

Review

"New Harmony has long been the American Eden that almost was—a place of learning, spirituality, and experimental architecture lost somewhere south of Indianapolis. This eclectic and sweeping volume brings its many lives, from utopian outpost on the frontier to center for contemplation and tourist site anchored by great works of modern architecture, to life. The equally diverse figures who animated the place, from the English industrialist Robert Owen to his distant heir Jane Blaffer Owen, and including architects Philip Johnson and Richard Meier, each receives a careful historic and formal analysis in this masterful collection of essays."—Aaron Betsky, president, School of Architecture at Taliesin"A detour to the rural heartland can alter many presumptions about American modern culture. Reformers included Robert Owen, who bought the communitarian settlement of New Harmony, Indiana, in 1825, espousing equal rights for workers, women, and former slaves. This book looks closely at New Harmony in the post-WWII era, when historic preservation and environmentalism held sway, while protean architects like Philip Johnson and Richard Meier collaborated with their visionary client, Jane Blaffer Owen. Readers too will look at American modernism from a radically new perspective."—Gwendolyn Wright, Columbia University"Three visionaries created New Harmony, and their visions could hardly be more different. Ben Nicholson and Michelangelo Sabatino, with their splendidly comprehensive study of Jane Blaffer Owen, the most elusive of the three, have completed the story of one of America’s most consequential experiments in town-building."—Michael Lewis, Williams College

This is a difficult one to review. What I don't like, it is old and portrays dated views on trees. What I do like, it is old and portrays dated view on trees! I wish someone would write a modern version of this book and expand on all we know about trees now. No disrespect intended for the author! We just think about trees differently now than in the past.

How horribly unfair for an earlier reviewer to give this book one star simply because it is an abridged version. Think of how many people will see that review and choose not to read what may be the most perfect book for neophyte dendrologists ever written! Nor is the book for inexperienced tree aficionados only. Even experts will be well served by the books beautiful prose and unabashed emotion, even if only reminds them how best to inspire a love of trees in their students. I already know the Latin names of all the eastern trees in the book, and know how to identify each species by sight. Nonetheless, I was thrilled by the historical information in the descriptions, and was actually moved to tears by Peattie's description of what we have lost and will continue to lose as these trees disappear from our forests. Each specie's unique characteristics are concisely described in the book, but each tree's character is lovingly explained, as well. Peattie writes so beautifully that you cannot help but be moved - and perhaps forever changed - by reading his descriptions. This book will make you gasp with wonder, stun you into speechlessness, make you laugh aloud with sheer joy, and probably move you to tears more than once. The few short pages about the Beech tree, for example, describe its characteristic bark and form, and explain how colonists knew a beech tree indicated good soil for planting crops. This is standard information, but how many field guides exclaim over the "gleam of its wondrously smooth bark," or remind us that the famous Beech carved into by Daniel Boone began its life fifty years before Shakespeare? You don't need any prior knowledge of silviculture or dendrology to learn from and love this volume. Field Guides may help you to distinguish between a red oak and a black oak, but no other book will make you fall in love with a tree. In fact, all the guidebooks in the world fail to do what this book does effortlessly and beautifully: turn your appreciation for trees into an educated passion for each and every tree in your backyard and beyond. I promise you will not regret reading this book; I virtually guarantee you will read it again and again. I only wish I could thank the author personally for the gift of this perfect book.

This is an absolutely enchanting book, necessary reading, which I am going through very slowly and with great enjoyment. However, on my copy, p. 170 is followed by pages 168 and 169. Please ALERT the publisher, in case other copies have this same printer's error.

Engrossing reading by one of the finest nature and science writers of the 20th century. Peattie includes captivating stories from other fields such as US history.

A Real classic. Well-narrated. I've read the book years ago, but the audio gives it a whole other dimension. This was highly recommended by a client of mine who has a high-end furniture making business. He's had his whole staff listen to the 6-7 chapters that describe the woods they use in their furniture.

Tops

This book soars! Beattie is gifted with the imagination and background to bring trees to life. He sets them in context with historical and amusing antidotes. Paul Landacre's illustrations are beautiful and very helpful. Keep this book near hand and dip into it for lovely stories on your favorite trees. Beattie is unsurpassed for nature writing!

I enjoyed reading this book if you can apply world "enjoy" in the case study of totalitarian goverment. This book is very well written. I love the masterful combination of personal stories and socio-political framing. I grew up in USSR and moved to US in early 90s and this book spoke to me. The author does excellent job portraying Soviet and post Soviet world and people in all of it sad and at times gruesome glory.I think for many readers this book will provide deep understanding of why Russia is what it is now and why Putin is is popular. It is also a lesson to all of us on how democracy can slip right thought our fingers.

When I looked up “The Future Is History” on Amazon and saw the 1-star reviews left by obvious trolls, I just *knew* this book had to be dangerously good. So I bought it immediately. I had read several of Gessen's meticulous and eye-opening New Yorker pieces, but this book takes it to a whole new level.Gessen tells the story through seven dramatis personae, each “both ‘regular’, in that their experiences exemplified the experiences of millions of others, and extraordinary: intelligent, passionate, introspective, able to tell their stories vividly.” They give first-person accounts of the everyday ordeal of surviving true to oneself in Russia. Like Zhanna, daughter of popular opposition politician Boris Nemtsov and activist in her own right, whose life demonstrates some of the consequences of opposing the regime -- like exile, incarceration and murder. The story of Masha the journalist illustrates the perils of truthtelling. Pioneering psychotherapist Marina Arutyunyan tries to shepherd modern mental health to Russia through lacerating thickets of state-mandated ideology. Openly gay Lyosha tries to advocate for oppressed minorities without getting fired from his precarious university post.Through the lives of the protagonists, Gessen weaves the last century of Russian history. Stalin’s self-cannibalizing reign of terror is particularly chilling: “Stalin’s terror machine executed its executioners at regular intervals. In 1938 alone, forty-two thousand investigators who had taken part in the great industrial-scale purges were executed, as was the chief of the secret police, Nikolai Yezhov.” Stalin once invited an old friend from Georgia to Moscow for a reunion, and after lavishly wining and dining him, had him executed before dawn: “This could not be explained with any words or ideas available to man.”And that is the most astonishing aspect of this book: it is not fiction. The protagonists’ experiences are so logic-defying, so disheartening, and such violations of basic human decency as to exist in a separate universe that no novelist could concoct. And yet, this universe has an internal logic. Perhaps it's best explained through Hannah Arendt, whose three-volume “Origins of Totalitarianism” Gessen deftly scrunches down to a few essential paragraphs: “What distinguishes a totalitarian ideology is its utterly insular quality. It purports to explain the entire world and everything in it. There is no gap between totalitarian ideology and reality because totalitarian ideology contains all of reality within itself.”And yet, the book reads like a novel, which is why I don’t want to give away too much. Who is Homo sovieticus? For whom do Russians vote in the “Greatest Russian Ever” (aka “Name of Russia”) contest year after year? What’s going to happen to Boris Nemtsov after he defies Putin? Do our heroes avoid getting beat up and arrested at the demonstrations? Why is Putin so popular in Russia? One pervasive theme of the book is the hegemony of doublethink over the Russian psyche. Coined by Orwell in “1984”, doublethink is the necessity of maintaining two contradictory beliefs for survival, e.g. publicly supporting the government ideology while knowing that it oppresses your very existence. This is some crazy-making stuff that Russians seem to have been put through for over a century. And yet, there are still people who fight for truth, healing, and freedom. Over and over, they rise to attend banned protests very likely to land them in jail (or worse). Their stories of stupendous bravery and selflessness consistently inspire. And lest you as a Westerner think that you’re somehow safe because, oh, this is something happening elsewhere, please note that the recent rise of authoritarianism in countries like America takes its playbook straight out of Russia. Attacks on the press, construction of alternate realities, propagation of fake news, persecution of minorities, and the shameless grabbing of executive power: it’s all happening right now.And you know what else? We’ve seen it all before: Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Mao. So don’t read this book just because it’s a riveting account of life in what’s still an undiscovered continent for most Westerners. Don’t read it just because it’s a tour de force of journalistic craft and bravery. Read it because it also informs your life as an American, German, Frenchman, Hungarian, or anyone who values the freedom of human life and ideas. Read it so that you may be impelled to take action.-- Ali Binazir, M.D., M.Phil., author & public speaking trainerPS: Congratulations to Masha Gessen for winning the National Book Award. Thoroughly deserved.

It’s a terrifying and essential book - even if you already know the story or parts of it - because it reads like a funerary oration for one's country. It acknowledges the late-Soviet and post-Soviet Russia’s life and struggle, and then ends with a nearly uniform conclusion from all of its subjects - “there is no future”, and with their attempts (successful or not) to escape or shield themselves from the growing totalitarian haze. The Future is History does a very important thing - it tells people's stories. Gessen has the clear-cut eloquence to preserve those stories' voice and weave them into a larger political narrative. I appreciate the focus on people's perception of themselves within the country, and on the shaping of their memories - and the bold incorporation of trauma frameworks to articulate the historical experience. The book is a very earnest, ethically driven, intellectual, and somehow unavoidably personal attempt to understand what happened to Russia - and to articulate that understanding. The Future Is History without doubt becomes one of the most excellent and important books on contemporary Russia. My issue is the scope of Gessen's interviews. They are seven people - a sociologist, a historian, a psychologist, and the rest are participants and witnesses of their times. But six out of seven are Moscovites. And seven out of seven hold university degrees. Six out of seven were born into intelligentsia. Two out of seven come from prominent political families. And while those are the people who are most visible - due to their location and privileged background - and active in the story that Gessen is telling, they do not have to consume the central spot within it. What happened to Russia is not solely what happened to academics' kids in Moscow.

Masha’s work on the fall of democracy in Russia is arresting. The focus on Homo soveticus in the early chapters portends how historical injustices persevere through succeeding generations. The failings of Boris Yeltsin shine through, and the disturbing rise of Vladimir Putin is written with an appropriate sense of mourning for what comes. While non-fiction, it is not written as non-fiction. We live the lives of Masha’s interviewees in her elegant prose. For much of the book (90’s and 00’s) we can almost relate to their aspirations. As Putin’s second time in power (in name) begins in 2012, we see authoritarianism fall across Russia like a blanket. The violence against LGBT people and the political assassinations are not just abstract events helping elsewhere, they happen to people we know through the text.Russia’s story isn’t just disaster tourism - events in China, the EU, and even the USA demand that this book be taken seriously. Anyone who believes it can’t happen here, wherever here may be, needs to read the last chapters where the pace of democratic collapse is as dumbfounding to Russians as it is to readers.

Revelations: The Autobiography of Alvin Ailey, by Alvin Ailey

From Publishers Weekly

Though choreographer Ailey (1931-1989), founder and artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, lived for 30 years in the public eye, the details of his life and character have remained largely mysterious, glimpsed only in such acclaimed signature works as "Revelations" (1960). The African American dancer, brought up in small-town, segregated Texas, was born to poverty. In his autobiography, he remembers "branches slashing against [his] child's body that is glued to his mother's body as they walk through the mud in bare feet, going from one place to another." Ailey reveals the feelings of inferiority that plagued him throughout his life, from his brief but promising sortie as an actor to his ultimate success in the dance world. He also tells of his single, disappointing conversation with his father, Alvin Ailey Sr.; his mother's rape; his own mental breakdown in 1980, precipitated by the death of his friend and colleague Joyce Trisler; and his descent into drug dependency, leading to his hospitalization. Important people in his life discussed here include Carmen de Lavallade, Maya Angelou and Lester Horton. Ailey's homosexuality is handled with reserve. Coauthor Bailey is a journalist with the Richmond [Va.] Free Press. Photos not seen by PW.- Free Press. Photos not seen by PW. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Revelations, one of Ailey's most famous ballets, is the title he selected for his autobiography, which was richly told to his chosen coauthor, Peter A. Bailey. Bailey did not complete the manuscript until after Alvin Ailey's death in 1989. To that core manuscript, he added interviews with dancers, colleagues, and friends who remembered Ailey and his contribution to the world of dance. Ailey reveals for the first time intimate details of his professional hurdles, personal life, and relationships with family and significant others that influenced his life. He discusses politics and racism and their effect on his dancing, on Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and on his self-image. The chapters chronicle his life from his childhood days in Texas to his tours abroad to his Broadway productions in New York to his period of manic depression in 1980. Ailey's life was a series of triumphs and disappointments, yet he managed to overcome his insecurities to become a pioneer in the world of dance and a choreographer of international reputation. For those who are familiar with his life and for those who know little, Revelations is a biographical source well worth reading. Lillian Lewis

Great Book

book was in very good condition!! I was pleased. Gives a detailed description on his life a struggles. I love it

I found this book very readable. It cast a different light onto the life of a man everyone new as brilliant. I was very surprised at how frankly this was written. No bars were held, even when Mr. Ailey didn't come across as a shining example. I think great pains were taken to retain the intergrity of the story without compromising Mr. Ailey's driving desire for privacy. The voices of many dance stars lent a certain energy to the book. Mr. Ailey made me laugh out loud while recounting details of his well-publicized breakdown. I was left wishing i'd paid more attention to this great dancer while he was yet alive.

A great history lesson and general overview of the lighting industry, protocols and components that go into any major LD production.I come from a musical background, incorporating small scale lighting for live performances and setting up basic DMX fixtures. This book was perfect for what I wanted: a more in depth study of how LARGE scale operations take place, and what kind of options are available in the low-mid level price/scale range. This is a fairly technical book, but not too technical. I have no formal training in lighting, only what I read on the net, and in manuals. I would recommend this book if your looking to take your small production to the next level. It really lays out options including specific fixture/console names and who are the major players in the industry. The intro history section was SUPER cool, a great read even for a non-technical individual.

Great book. You'll find everything you need to know about the protocols, power requirements, and the uses of automated lighting in this detailed book.I'm only long for more detailed programming advice. For example, most used macros, specific examples of difficult tasks asked of people in the industry, specific cue list setups and their executor / button assignments, and favorite custom effects.

I really like this book because it describes how the moving lights Works, it explains the electrial, electronics, data, mechanics, optics and networks.Very easy to understand and complete. It's very technical if you don't know about computers and electronics but if you have worked with the moving heads I think it's not a big deal. The book also has some tips for programming and the lighting design.

Excellent Book at a fair price.

Great resource for the novice or experienced lighting designer. I would highly recommend purchasing the 3 book pack

Very detailed and easy read. Would recommend if you are taking a lighting class. This should be on the college listing.

This book won't make you a lighting designer, but certainly lays out the basics for those who need to know more in that direction. And he tries really hard to make everything understandable.

This is a great book for people wanting to learn more about Automated Lighting. The book covers tons of material from the history of automated lighting, through power requirements (including a detailed section on what power is and all of the different standards), through programming and so on.
