I wouldn't recommend anyone waste their time or money on this. It's a ploy to get you to buy two books written by a writer that's obviously a novice on this subject matter.

I admire Robin McGraw!

I really liked this book and I love Robin McGraw's insight into a lot of different things. This makeover guide is good at reviewing different makeup techniques. I got this book to replace the one I had that my dog chewed up.

Book was in EXCELLENT condition! Shipper packed the book to protect it. I am looking forward to using it as I read "Inside My Heart: Choosing to Live with Passion and Purpose".

Total waste of money. States the obvious and has pages and pages of lines to pad it out. You don't need it, trust me.

Well, as usual I haven't done what the book suggestion, but I loved reading it and getting inspired. I guess I'll have to crack it open again,.

Burrell has an eye for putting perennials together in ways that make garden colors sing. The cover is a prime example. That Red Valerian is something you don't see all that often in garden centers, yet it is lovely and blooms all season long, so I was glad to learn about it and what it goes well with. The book made me aware of the many lesser-known or overlooked perennials that seem to be out there, even if you might have to search online to find them. It is filled with color photographs, and has ideas and design plans for just about every conceivable type of color palette, climate, and season you're working with, be it woodland, waterside, desert, or tropical. Maybe I'm jaded, but despite the dozens of garden styles presented here, relatively few were so breathtaking that they stopped me in my tracks. Hence the four stars.

I have been gardening for about 15 years. I have read more gardening books than I can count, visited public gardens for ideas and spent hours in garden centers. This is the single best resource I have. I bought this only a month ago and it has already transformed my garden. I already had some of the plants in my garden, and when I resituated them according to her suggestions, viola! Instant impact! I have half the book dogeared and underlined.~I’ve seen numerous reviews complaining about grainy, unclear pictures. There must be more than one printing of this. The pictures in my book are clear and beautiful.

This compact book is packed with inspiration, colorful photos and examples of color combinations!! This is exactly what I was looking for because the photos give you a real feel for how the plants will look together. One of the gardens I am planning this year is a butterfly garden and I was pleased this has a great example of plants grown together to encourage butterflies and other pollinators. There are so many combinations of colors and styles as well as special gardens (shade, wet, dry, etc...), even as an experienced gardener I found some terrific new ideas in this book. Happy I made this purchase!

Received this book in a timley fashion. The book was in great shape. It is an old book, some 20 years or so. One thing about gardening, it's not real faddish. There have been some trends which are currently being featured that are addressed in this book, just not the focus of the book. Other than that little issue, a garden is pretty much a garden. Color combos being the most noticeable. Might want to keep these issues in mind when purchasing used garden books.

If you've ever drooled over perfectly arranged landscapes designed with fabulous color combinations, texture, and an array of plants all sizes and shapes who's colors are pleasing to the eye, this book is your tool. There are many garden companies that offer pre-designed gardens, but they're expensive and sometimes have plants that you just don't care for. This book gives you ideas, plans, tips on how to combine plants in such a way that it looks like a professional landscaper came and did all the work. Every design is wonderful, the photography is superb and the gardens are beautiful. A real asset for anyone who wants to have a beautiful garden without paying a designer/landscaper to do it for you. A great book.

This is a great book for the gardener new to design. It presents a fairly simple scheme for creating a flower bed that will have perennials blooming throughout the growing season. For someone wanting to create a new bed or who has just purchased a newly-built home with nothing but minimal landscaping, this book would help in planning a more colorful landscape. However, I do think that adding a chapter on incorporating perennials and shrubs would have enhanced the book as so many situations call for them. For instance, foundation beds with nothing but perennials would mostly be bare during the winter; shrubs, particularly evergreens, would give additional structure. Otherwise, this is a great place to start in planning a design with it's simple to follow, well thought-out steps.

To say stunning combinations is a vast under-statement if ever there were one. This book provides color combination from subtle to bold for all locations in the garden. The only end of possibilities is your own imagination!

This book is a must have for your library if you are a sailor, historian, lover of Polynesia and the "South Seas", of exploration or one who enjoys puzzling out the human condition. Beautifully written by a scholar passionate about her subject. As a sailor of those seas, filmmaker and writer myself about this subject I cannot recommend it more. Could not put it down.

Christina Thompson is the author of Come On Shore and We Will Kill and Eat You All, which I read and loved. I was thrilled when I saw that she was about to publish another book, and even more so when I found a review copy; thanks go to Edelweiss and Harper Collins.For centuries, Western scholars have tried to tease apart the many unknown aspects of Polynesian history. The islands are spread across an area of the Pacific Ocean (and beyond) so large that all of the Earth’s landmasses could fit into it, and there would still be room for an extra one the size of Australia. And yet there’s undeniable evidence that they navigated from one to another in canoes, without compasses or written maps of any kind. How the heck did they do it?Thompson discusses the early European efforts, from the ‘discovery’ of various islands—and she points out that Europeans jealously guarded information, and so British explorers didn’t benefit from what the Spanish found, for example, and vice versa—to present day. She talks about the differing points of view, languages, and cultural divides that prevented the white folk from understanding what islanders were trying to tell them, and from believing that they knew as much as they did. As far as I can tell, Thompson is the first Caucasian writer to approach this subject with respect for the islander peoples about whom she is writing; her husband and sons are of Maori descent, and so for her, this connection merges the academic and the personal.The thing that makes Thompson so readable is her wry take on the errors made by those that came before—mostly the Westerners that approached the area with paternalism tinged with more than a little racism in many cases. I’ll be reading along and thinking yes yes, this is interesting…and then I’ll come across a remark and reread it—did she just say what I think she just said? And then I am laughing out loud. Find me a geographer, an anthropologist, a sociologist that can do that. In particular, her unpacking of the whole Kon-Tiki debacle is unmissable.If I could change anything, it would be to have been able to read this before I went into teaching instead of after retirement. I taught a lot of Islander kids, and the wisdom is that when we teach American history, we incorporate the history of each ethnic group represented in the classroom. I knew how to include my African-American students, and I knew what to tell kids of Chinese and Japanese backgrounds. I had material for my Latino kids. But with my Islander students, all I could do is say that I had truly tried to find information for them, but what little I found was so deadly dull and written at such a high literacy level that it wouldn’t work for them. And what would really kick ass is if this writer, at some lull between high-powered academic projects, could write something for children or young adults of Maori descent. Right now, English-speaking Pacific Island kids have one Disney movie. That’s it.This book is highly recommended to every reader with post-high-school literacy ability and stamina. It’s a cultural treasure, and though I rarely do this with galleys, I will go back and read this again, because there’s no way to take it all in the first time, even when making notes.What a wonderful find.

From Spaniards and Dutch, to Captain Cook's many voyages, to Thor Heyerdahl, spans centuries of puzzlement. For how did the Polynesians get where they were, where did they come from, and were they all related?Linguistics proved a relationship, the animals carried, pigs, dogs, chickens and rats, added firmly to the links. In the modern times, after radiocarbon dating, fishhooks and pottery were added, the animals came in useful again; their bones could safely be DNA tested from modern and buried sites, rather than disturbing too many human graves.I enjoyed the account and the photos. Some of the passages were new to me and others more familiar but the whole is well assembled and tries to show what people on both sides believed at the time.Notes P319 - 354 in my e-ARC. This is a great book and insight on what impacts jurors. As a criminal defender I found this book incredibly useful and compelling. Sundby has great insights on the jury psyche.

This is a decent criminal justice book and it is an easy read. More than likely you are getting this book because it is required for a class. It gives a in depth look at what jurors on capital cases go through. I would recommend this if you have to read it for a class but maybe not so much for leisure reading.

The cold statistics come to life as Sundby relates how different factors influence the life and death decisions that go on across America in death penalty trials through the eyes of each juror on the panel. A real eye opener. It should be required reading in every law school and for every lawyer who defends death penalty cases.

Sundby's book takes the reader beyond abstractions about how capital punishment decisions are made, and provides a rare and consistently fascinating account of how two actual juries reach their decisions. The book is filled with insights about the legal and emotional dynamics of the jury room and the courtroom in death penalty cases. It pulls off a couple of very difficult feats. A good starting place. Gives good, basic no nonsense rules you should know before and during your divorce process.

Good advise, but it may not apply to all cases.
