This condensed version of 452 pages is a very very interesting story from the Urantia book of 2,097 pages. But it brings out the story so much better than the King James version of the story ... but the stories speak so much better and "feels" a lot more Life like. I'm pretty sure its not for fundamentalist Christians ... but if you can just free up preconceived notions and just follow the story, if only for the story of Jesus it just might leave you with a ah-ha moment. It is a very good and positive story/history of events that effect us all in the end ... what is possible to happen after our Life ends. The whole story is much more than just about Jesus. All of my waking Life I've heard and read the story of events that happen in the Bible, but I was always left with more questions than I ever got answers to ... it seemed absolutely cryptic and plagued with abysmal misunderstanding issues. And to add to the problems with the King James version, it seems pretty spooky and down right negative. Enter then but by sheer dumb luck the Urantia ... which is a long story in itself with a lot of detail ... 2097 pages ! Then all of a sudden "The Urantia Revelation" fell my way. It just cuts to the chase and arrives by the end with a very believable ... some may say fiction ... history of how the earth became what it is and how the peoples of the Earth ( Urantia ) came about. It fills in a lot of gaps that are in the Bible. I find it far more reliable and by far and away more positive as a Life enhancement. As weird as Life can be and in some regards unbelievable, it should not stop one from asking questions and looking for answers to questions never answered. Life is so very short ... by the time one begins to figure it out its time to transition from this Life to what ever ... if anything ... is next. I found a ( one of many ) nugget from the Urantia to leave you with : " Evil is dependent on a deficiency of wisdom." But wisdom can often be found in the most unlikely places ... all of the books above are tools towards knowledge but one must take the time to first look.

"Incredible, Awesome, and Stupendous" come to mind in trying to describe my reaction to this great book.Without adding to, or subtracting from the Cosmology, Theology and History revealed in the Urantia Book - and (perhaps more importantly) without "dumbing it down" the author has made the dense material contained in the Urantia Book eminently accessible.I cofidentially recommend this book for all potential, new, and experienced Urantia Book readers.Kudos to the author!

The beginning is hard to follow but when the book starts into the chapters it’s good, the narrator is a little monatone at times but it’s good as far as I’ve gotten in the book!

As a Catholic, I found parts of this book revelatory. But the many pages that describe the history of Jesus seem to me quite protestant in viewpoint. For instance, there’s hardly a mention of the mother of Jesus, as if to say she was insignificant. Also, no mention of the Eucharist, and yet the apostles and early church recognized “the body and blood of Christ.” I recommend this book to anyone seeking the truth but rest assured, it is not THE BOOK, because there is no THE BOOK.

I just want to give this book a shoutout for being AMAZING. It is literally an encyclopedia for food styling. She has every food, what could happen to it, how to fix it, how to make it look best, and what products to use to fix it. This is extremely time saving for people like me who are new to food blogging and can reference everything before starting a recipe. Now, I haven't actually tried her different techniques but she's been in the business along time so I'm sure they are effective. Don't be scared off by the beginning which is very general info on styling in general. Get past that and you'll find the goods. Thanks, Delores!!

Use this book as a reference for food styling in our R&D lab. It has helped us improve our photography for Social media and print. Has an exhaustive list of tools, foods, preparation techniques, special effects (like condensation, steam, char, etc.), challenging situations, funny anecdotes from her past that can serve as bad examples or cautionary tales, propping, working with photographers, customers and for yourself, and many other topics. Like any reference, it has its perspective, and it's just one woman's eyes, but she's seen a lot so it's a valuable source of information. Be aware though that other perspectives are out there, and the market can and will shift so things that apply here as desirable may become dated but many of the tools and techniques will never change unless we start eating something entirely different...like pills or gels rather than real food. Like with any skill though, having the information doesn't guarantee success you've got to practice and apply your skills regularly or your results may decline.

I was looking for a book that showed how to do special effects for food: make a burger look like a Big Mac on tv rather than the sloopy flat thing you get that looks like someone stepped on it at McDs. This book covers all of that and more. I knew quick a few tricks prior to buying this book so I was hesitant to spend $40. After getting this book and flipping through it I would've paid the $75 publisher's price because it's that good of a book. Keep in mind this is food FX, not real food, there is a difference. Much of this stuff is not edible but looks amazing on tv or in photos. If you want to cook a fancy meal and have it look nice then this book is not for you. There are plenty of those books out there but this is the bible for food FX for indie film makers, commercials, photos, etc. Lots of in depth knowledge. I know I will be using this book as a reference for years to come.

As a teacher I try and bring in different professionals so that the kids can speak to the people in the profession and be exposed to all sides of completing the job. I found a food stylist who was willing to come in a speak to the kids and she mentioned the value of the book. She had in fact studied with the author. Based on her recommendation I purchased this book and have been very satisfied with the results. It is easy to read, jam packed fl Of information for the aspiring food stylist and inspirational in its review of the history of the professional and the attributes it takes to be successful in the profession. I will definitely be sharing this information with my middle school students.

This is a major tome on this subject. It seems to cover everything you will need to make you food photogenic. It's well laid out and though I haven't read it all, what I have is clear and very useful. If you want to photograph food, it is a much have.

As a former food stylist, now retired, I purchased this book because I had been helped by Delores Custer when I was just starting out in this career and admired her work and her generosity in sharing her knowlege. The book, for me, has brought back wonderful, tension filled, and amusing moments when I was working. She has not left a question unanswered for those who would like to enter the field. The book is beautifully and thoughtfully illustrated and a good teaching manual, as well as being just an interesting read for people who are curious about the field.

From a photographer's point of view, this book will not give you the know-how you maybe looking after (lighting scenarios, techniques, tricks etc), at least I was, but as a food-photographer you find yourself often in situations where most of the prep work needs to be done by you, as well, and then again this is useful information in those cases. A massive reference with many how-it's-done explanations.How to set up a sandwich? A Burger? A cake? Those branding marks on meat? You find it all in the book.Again, from a photographer's point of view, the photos are so extraordinary that you can benefit simpy by analyzing lighting and redoing it.

I really really really love this book! I found it at the library along with many of the other popular permaculture books you find on Amazon. After a couple months of reviewing them all, I found myself continuously just going back to this one as reference. We're just putting in our first permaculture garden, in a house we just moved into, and this one just seemed to be the most practical with the most useful info for a small scale permaculture home gardener.While there are other great books, I find that a lot of them are just completely not useful for our needs due to the scale of the designs and projects that they focus on. Many are for properties several acres or more. We have about 1/3 acre to make into a garden, in the middle of a subdivision. Part of what I *don't* like about some of the permaculture books, is the total chaos seen in the demonstration pics included. While I like a garden that looks more "wild and whimsical" and for sure stay away from straight rows and ordered, highly-groomed landscaping; I also want something that is aesthetically beautiful, especially right up against the house. Basically, I like the English Country Garden look...everything exploding in coordinated flowers and colors, in soft soothing tones. I don't like looking out and just seeing what looks like a bunch of dried weeds and mishmash everywhere. I know a huge part of permaculture is biodiversity, and that's important. With Edible Landscaping, I believe I can achieve both. For example, at the base of every fruit tree I learned we should plant "plant guilds" composed of 4 different types of plants that will benefit and nourish the tree while attracting beneficial insects to kill the "bad guy" insects. In a lot of the permaculture books these guilds just look like a bunch of random weeds and/or plants, but in this book, I see diagrams of plants that aesthetically blend well together creating a more intentional look.Anyway, the summary is that with the help of this book, I believe that I'll be able to achieve EVERYTHING of what I want--a closed ecosystem that self-sustains and provides habitat for all the wonderful birds and critters I hope to invite, a food garden that doesn't require the input of outside fertilizers etc, and a food garden that over time will feed the household. And all on a semi-small urban lot!

I've been gardening for a number of years (I'll decline to share how many) and have a pretty large collection of gardening and landscape books. Most of the newer books I look at just have a more modern twist on the same old tried and true principals that have been around forever, maybe with some updated pretty photos for explanation and motivation. This book surprised me. I learned some new things, and got new ideas. I especially love that Judd focuses on sustainability and (almost but not quite more important) low maintenance gardening ideas and planting suggestions. This book has great photos, clear instructions and even has recipes for drinks using the edible fruits you harvest. Judd has an easy going approach to his writing that is interspersed with humor. You could totally see yourself leaning on a shovel conversing with him about beneficials and compost - or, if you follow his suggestions, you'd more likely be chatting while relaxing in a hammock with a drink! I've already recommended this book to several of my gardening friends. Great stuff!!

I love Permaculture and Edible Landscaping, but this book is geared much more towards Permaculture. It's focused on a few techniques used in Permaculture setups such as Hugelkultur and swales. Other than the few methods it covers to create a sustainable food system, it doesn't offer much in the way of actually landscaping or utilizing certain plants to create a pleasing aesthetic which is one of the odder (but understandable) complaints I hear about Food Forests. If you're looking for a book to give you a list of attractive flowers, shrubs, etc. with multiple functions other than just being pretty, this probably isn't for you. If you're looking to implement low input food gardens, have a curiosity about how to use mushrooms to clean your water runoff, or what is and how to sheet mulch, this is a good book for you. This book didn't fill the gap in my knowledge I was hoping for, but it reinforces other information for people looking to create healthy, holistic, and sustainable food-bearing landscapes to enjoy.

Liked the way the book was written. I have a small collection of permaculture books. This book skips the theory and gets directly to what a lot of novice permaculturists want to know to get started. Has a lot of great photos and drawings with easy to follow directions to get started. The author created his garden in Maryland with similar conditions to my area in northern Va was helpful for me. Most of the permaculture books I read take place in northern climates so their choice of plants may not work for my area. But if you read these books, you would know it's a trial and error thing, finding what works best in your setup.

I've read several Permaculture books now and this would be the one I'd recommend as a first book to someone who doesn't care about all the science behind it, nor all the principles of design, and just wants to jump ahead to implementation on a urban or suburban yard. Very easy to read, easy to understand, great photos and diagrams & illustrations. It is not an introduction to permaculture but an action plan for the urban or suburban homeowner. A unique aspect is it has lots of recipes for cocktails and even to make wine. I think it was a mistake to include the making of the cob oven when he could have used the space to tell about chickens, or about vertical elements to grow more food in less space while stacking functions such as shade and moderating sun or wind on the house, or about building water features. Hopefully he'll drop the oven chapter and add some of these others in his second edition!

I really like this book! Lots of good information I can use and I loved that it was truthful and easy to read. There is some business information that's a bit hard to wrap your head around, but I realize the author has been around the business awhile, first doing soap making and then doing candles and eventually, I too may "get" the language. lol! I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to get into candle making and is considering making a move to sell retail and/or wholesale.

It's hard to overstate how terrible this book is -- and reading the many poorly written positive reviews I can only assume they are bought and paid for. This book fails at teaching you how to make candles, and fails at teaching you how to start a candle-making business.A couple examples: in the beginning where she is explaining how to make candles, the author neglects to mention how to put the wick in the candle. In the business section, less than one page is given to starting an online business (you know, what almost everyone would want to do). But she gives the same or less space to any other way -- it's more of an outline for a book than an actual book. The font is large with huge space between lines and it still ends up as a super thin (clearly self-published) book, because there just isn't enough information to fill a book.

Downloaded this book while it was on free promo and found it to be very helpful. I think she tried to put two books under one, it is a two part book, I was only interested in the first part where she details out how to make candles, and that is what I wanted to know and learn. The second part is about how to get into the business of selling candles, to me that is not something I am looking to do at this moment, but looks like she packed a lot of info in it.

This book gives a great generalized overview of the business aspects as well as what supplies are needed and generally how to make candles. I had no idea how much actually went into making each kind of candle and i have a healthier respect for what to expect as i get started.

This book is fun to just look at and absorb all the talent within the pages-----then moving on and really enjoying the experience of making these little treasures keeps me going back to make them all. The book spurs the reader onto wanting to explore the world of coming up with their own ideas and patterns. It is definitely a book for a mother/daughter (or son) to sit down together and make a day of fun-time and memories.

This book is a lot of fun to look through. There are so many different types of projects I can't imagine anybody not finding something that suits their tastes. Just as there is an array of design styles are a good variety of techniques and materials used. A lot of fun to look through and work from.

Great ideas for easy and imaginative sewing projects! I am using the ideas and illustrations as inspiration for a children's sewing class, although some of the softie's limbs are a bit difficult for tiny fingers.

These softies are super fun to make. I enjoy their designs. It is nice to have designs at my fingertips.

I love the designs in this book, but I hate the fact that the templates are printed right inside the book. This means you'll have to copy and enlarge them. Enlarging can be a real challenge.

Haven't tried all of the projects yet, so I can't speak for all of them, but the ones I did try were nice and simple for a beginner like me. However, I found that some were a bit vague in the instruction, and while a veteran sewer could probably figure out what to do, a stupid n00b like me struggled to figure out just how to do some of the projects.However, I suppose all that can be blamed by my lack of skill.

This book is great and gorgeous. It's great to learn how to make your first softies (softies that I know well from the artist's blogs). It's gorgeous with beautiful pictures and a very inviting layout. The artists are so generous to share their patterns! I have tried already a couple and it was easy. And it also help me to open my mind and make my own designs!It's a book worth it to buy, have and enjoy!

If you like funky-unusual stuffed animals, this is the book for you. I absolutely love its simplicity and the projects are delightful and easy to follow. I highly recommend it.

One of the lesser-known members of the famous 1927 New York Yankees was a pitcher who was on his second tour of duty with the Yankees. Urban Shocker was one of the pitchers for the team after several outstanding seasons for the St. Louis Browns. His career and life is captured in this terrific biography by Steve Steinberg.The book covers much more than Shocker’s life before the game, his career highlights and game-by-game accounts (there is very little of the latter). The reader will learn much about Shocker’s mindset when pitching. This is evident by his use of a spitball or “wet ball”, allowed when he began his career and one of the pitchers who was allowed to keep using it after it was banned from the game in 1920. Another passage in which the reader gets into Shocker’s mind is when he threw this pitch as a rookie to two star Yankee teammates in an intra-squad game. He was gutsy and did what he wanted.This was also true throughout his career. He was bitter about being traded to the St. Louis Browns, especially because he was considered a troublemaker because of who he befriended on the team. He always wanted the ball against the Yankees to show how wrong they were to trade him. However, when the Yankees reacquired him, he was very excited to be playing for the same manager who he thought wanted to get rid of him, Miller Huggins. The book does a great job of illustrating this relationship between the two men.Shocker also wanted to keep his health problems as secret as possible, in which he succeeded as it was a surprise to many when he died months after retiring as a pitcher. He had cardiac issues and it would case him many issues on the field late in his career, including sudden collapse. It was the main reason he had to retire, but he was a fighter to the end.This biography provides a lot of information on Shocker, a pitcher whose contributions to the Yankees are often overlooked. The book even mentions Bill James’ proclamation that Shocker was one of the best pitchers of the era. Written in a manner that gives readers a clear picture of Urban Shocker, both the man and the baseball player, it is a book that all baseball fans should add to their libraries.I wish to thank University of Nebraska Press for providing a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Once again Steve Steinberg has hit a circuit clout with his latest gem on a little-known member of the fabled 1927 New York Yankees. Although I knew Shocker pitched for the Bombers in this time period I knew nothing else about him. Urban Shocker is certainly worthy of a biography of his own and author Steinberg has provided us with several little known facts about Shocker's life and his contributions to the game of baseball.Shocker began his career with the Yankees and became known as somewhat of a difficult player to handle when he began associating with a teammate who found pleasure in alcoholic beverages. Manager Miller Huggins was advised to trade Shocker in order to strengthen their second-base position and Shocker was dealt to his hometown St. Louis Browns where Shocker had memorable teammates such as Hall of Famer George Sisler and other stalwarts such as Kenny Williams and Baby Doll Jacobson. Despite being upset with the trade Shocker pitched well for the Browns but once again became entangled with another hand-drinking pitcher on the Browns and owner Phil Ball tired of Shocker's temperament and sent him back to the Yankees in 1925. An interesting anecdote that Steinberg relates is that Miller Huggins stated that the Yankees didn't wantto include Lou Gehrig in the deal but if the Browns had insisted, they would have included Lou in the deal.Shocker got by as a pitcher by using his whits. He was one of the last of those pitchers to legally use the spitball and often used a pitch he called a "slow ball". When I first became a baseball fan it was called a let-up pitch and now called a change-up. Shocker also used the reverse of Willie Keeler's philosophy by pitching the ball so the hitters would hit the ball where the fielders are located.Author Steingberg also relates the illness that would prematurely take the life of Urban Shocker. Shocker kept it a secret that he had to sleep propped up in bed so he could breathe easier due to his heart ailment which had no treatment at the time. His Yankee roommate, bat boy Eddie Bennett was aware of it but he kept it a secret.This book contains many anecdotes of numerous baseball personalities during the late 1910s and 1920s and thankfully does not include game-by-game summaries that populate too many baseball books. This is baseball history and I'm sure Urban Shocker and his family would be proud to have an author the quality of Steve Steinberg relate his story. The book contains 244 pages of text with numerous photos I haven't seen previously spaced throughout the text.
