McKay Jenkins did a wonderful job of capturing the the bittersweet of the one who climbs. As a sister of Raymond Martin, I can tell you I was deeply moved by the words and his expertise at keeping my eyes on the pages. I could not put the book down. I regret only that my mother, Ruby, didn't get to see the final piece of work. She related to us the kindness and empathy that Mr. Jenkins expressed during the interviews. I stood at that mountain floor many times since the tragedy and am still in awe of the great beauty which Jenkins painted so poetically in his book. The spirit and courage of the climber is known only to the spirit of another climber and sometimes to those who were fortunate enough to love him/her. Mr. Jenkins has obviously felt the pain and the exhilaration of reaching the heights and the defeats while exploring the masterpieces in nature. Many thanks for his talent and for his informative understanding of the powers of nature. I am eternally grateful for the many people who opened their arms to my family and for those people who spent time on the mountain in search for the boys. Mr. Jenkins depicted their integrity and courage very well.

Riveting reading.

Compelling story of a mountain tragedy.

This book does a great job of blending snow science and the history of human avalanche experience with a compelling personal story of five unfortunate young climbers. If the scientific and historical perspectives in this book had been available to these climbers, their story would likely be a different one. Anyone interested in skiing or climbing in mountainous backcountry should find this book to be informative, intriguing, and, if not for the tragedy, enjoyable. This book presents the dry text of snow science in a package that will hold your interest. Though flawed in its accuracy regarding personal history, details of mountaineering and local geography, it provides knowledge about the nature of snow and its metamorphosis that any mountain adventurer should be aware of. I am sending a copy to a friend who teaches avalanche awareness classes, as I know he'll thoroughly enjoy it...in spite of the tragedy.

I found this book to be well written and engaging throughout. The story revolves around a 1969 tragedy on Glacier National Park's Mount Cleveland. The author delves into to the background and character of each young man involved and some of the rescuers as well. The whole is interwoven with scientific and historical information regarding avalanches. I almost gave this book five stars but for the lack of detail surrounding the final attempt on the mountain. This through no fault of the author, there simply remains a great deal of mystery surrounding the events retold.

This book is a must read for anyone who likes books about mountaineering, and outdoor adventure, or for that matter, anyone who has ever set foot on a snow covered mountain. It is the story of five young men who perish in a huge avalanche while trying to climb the yet unscaled north face of Mount Cleveland, in Glacier National Park. But it is much more then just this story. Jenkins skillfully weaves within his book the history of avalanches and the grim effects they can have upon those who seek to conquer the mountains. And he will convince you that beneath the beauty of a snow-covered mountain lies a living and breathing monster in waiting. In the author's own words, "Hiking or skiing in avalanche country is like walking around in a valley you know to be inhabited by grizzly bears." It is a chilling reminder of the fury Mother Nature can wreak upon us. Buy this book, but read it in the confines of your warm home far away from any snow covered mountain. --Paul S.

Like "Into Thin Air", "The Perfect Storm" and almost any book by McKay's mentor Peter Matthieson, The White Death both grips you and informs you. McKay spins out the story of five boys on a mountain slowly, letting the suspense build as he provides more information on avalanches than could be found in any one place. He pitches the book at a level that flatters the reader's intellect. You get it, but you never feel he has watered it down for that purpose.A footnote: I met McKay last summer in Nicaragua. I like him personally and hoped the book would be good. I was up until 1:00 AM to finish it. That's more than friendship -- that's a good read.

I recently read The White Death, and I can tell you, its a fantastic book. There's a wealth of information about the science of snow and avalanches, interwoven with a story of the highest drama that's both compassionately and conscientiously told. Furthermore, I appreciate Jenkin's perspective. As an outsider to the sport of mountaineering, he makes the world of climbing understandable to those of us who prefer to remain at lower altitudes. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Pros: - Even someone with no programming or math knowledge could pick up the book, read it, and learn Prolog - Uses ISO-Prolog - Large section of helpful example programsBig Cons: (I'll give citations, only from the first 100 pages to keep things short, lest anyone think I am lying about the problems with the book) - Frequent syntax errors *in program statements* - in Prolog, every comma and period is absolutely essential, when they are missing it entirely changes the meaning of the statement - the book misses them pretty routinely (p 81, twice) - Frequent logic errors - in Prolog, the order of facts and rules is extremely important. The book commonly mixes things up, presenting you with programs that will not work (p 56 - note here that they are trying to give an example of what will/won't work, and they get it backwards) - Frequent editing/formatting errors - charts, diagrams etc are fairly often on the wrong page or in the wrong location, etc. (p 48) - Poor organization - looking through the table of contents, you would think the book is extremely well organized, but as you read it, you'll find new and important ideas thrown into random sections - if you forget something, and need to find it later, you'll probably need to re-skim the entire book. Things are almost never presented in convenient bullets/numbering, almost always in paragraph form, again, making essential ideas tedious to find. - Confusing - I have degrees in math and computer science, and have been programming for 15 years, and I still found parts of the book hard to follow - note that it had nothing to do with Prolog itself, which is actually very straightforward, but rather with the explanations given, which sometimes seem meandering and poorly worded. - A really short and crummy index makes things hard to find. For example, look up "atoms", a concept first mentioned on page 26, and routinely mentioned afterwards, a concept absolutely essential to understanding Prolog - the index shows that the first (and only) time it appears is on page 123.Average Cons: - Authors use an "arrow system" to trace Prolog decision making, I think a table system (which could easily show previous, current, and future steps, and details of each iteration) would have been better while presenting more information in a clearer fashion. - Code re-use - normally a good thing, frustrating in this book. You might have a rule (like a function) called "mother(X)..." early on in the book, not use it for 100 pages, and then it appears again. If you want to try the program out yourself, you'll need to know the exact definition of "mother(X)...". There's no way to find what page the function was on in the index or TOC, so you find yourself spending 30 minutes leafing through the book to find it. 99% of these are a single line of code, so there's really no need to reuse them, it's hardly saving any space. - Overly complex examples - sometimes the authors illustrate an idea with 20 lines of code, when 4 would have been sufficient. It makes for a lot of extra reading and deciphering.Small Cons: - (This could be a pro or con - since I don't know too many people who *start* their programming experience with Prolog, I assume the reader has some experience with programming, and so list this as a con) Book is far too detailed for someone with moderate programming or math experience. This helps some people, but makes it a tedious read for others. Every concept is thoroughly explained. If you're a programmer, this gets a little old during things like variables and recursion. If you know any math, verbose explanations of predicate logic will become tiresome. In fairness, it was no doubt the authors' intention to make a "complete" introduction to Prolog, and so it is hard to criticize this. - (Another pro/con, depending on the reader) British examples - the authors are British (or at least one of them is), and use British references in their code all the time (9th century princes of Wales, p 34; horses who won races in Britain in 1927, p 53) - if you're British this might break up the monotony and make things a little more interesting, if you're not, it just gets a little old, I'd rather see every example just use "cat","dog","mouse".Other: - NOT a good reference book (and it wasn't meant to be), if you know Prolog already and need a reference book, look elsewhere. This is for people who do not know Prolog.Conclusion: - I wish I bought a different book. BUT despite everything, I did adequately learn Prolog from this book, so will reluctantly give it 3 stars.

I went with the reviews that stated that this is the gold standard for learning Prolog and I was not disappointed. While some books on code have you searching for better, working examples on Google; this introduction included all working code organized in a logical and thoughtful manner. Only criticism I would have is that it goes on a little long at times on the theory of the workflow in Prolog, although there may be some people out there who are really interested in this aspect. If you are interested in logic programming at all pick this book up.

This is the "KnR" of Prolog programming. It has the same diversity of style that some people who might want a "how to program Prolog in 24 hours" approach won't appreciate. It covers the basis of the language however in a way that ties together, as all good programming reference books do, the fundamental reasoning that went into the language and how to use it effectively in the way it was meant to be. Great to read on Kindle app.

Programming in Prolog is a clear, precise introduction to Prolog from the ground up. While is does start with the basics, it is an incredibly thorough text, covering all minutia of the language. The text is clear, easy to understand, and to the point, moving quickly through topics without sacrificing understanding. I used this book as a supplementary text in an upper-division college course. After reading only the first four chapters, I knew things about the language that the instructor did not. I highly recommend this book to any programmer of any skill level that is interested in learning the Prolog programming language.Additionally,The following two books were recommended in the preface of Programming in Prolog. Prolog is a complex subject, especially for someone not well familiar with mathematical logic. Thus, it is very important how the foundation would be laid down. Typically the books I had read on Prolog tend to two extremes. They are either too condensed for such a complicated subject as logical programming, or too broad and mathematically intensive. I would put this book into the first category. Though very concise and well structured, this book does not seem to be a good primer. I would rather recommend the book of Ivan Bratko "Prolog Programming for Artificial Intelligence (International Computer Science Series)" 2nd edition (the third edition of this book is due in August 2000). Ivan Bratko had managed to find the optimal style of presenting both the essence and the practical aspects of the language. Bratko's book covers various practical applications of the language and manages to convey the basic concepts of Prolog without overwhelming the beginner with too abstract or too condensed passages.Nevertheless, "Programming in Prolog" could be a very good programming reference once you are relatively comfortable with the language.

The tension sneaks up on you and keeps you on the edge, and while the protagonists have depth and likable personalities the villains are eerily frightening and sinister.Doctor Marissa Frasier is a strong, capable and able heroine, who is not afraid to face the threats if it means saving people's lives. She is dedicated and caring, she is passionate and loving, and she can kick ass when required. She is smart, mature, and beautiful inside and out. She knows what she wants and is willing to admit it. I admired her, liked her, and was cheering for her while afraid for her.And Colby Agency investigator Lacon Traynor from Texas couldn't have been more perfect for the sophisticated doctor. Lacon has that southern charm and smoothness, but do not let it fool you, he is more than capable to fight for you and protect you with his life. A man with sharp instincts, sense of humor, who is intelligent, competent, loves his family, helps people in need, and can cook definitely gets me swooning over him!From the very first meeting, Marissa and Lacon are drawn to each other. The chemistry is there, their minds connect and their temperaments are alike, they recognize each other's as equals and admire each other's capabilities. "Body of Evidence" follows Dr. Marissa (Issy) Frasier as she is first confronted by her abusive ex-husband and then framed for his murder- and targeted by the mob. Luckily, she knows someone at the hospital who has enlisted the help of the Colby Agency for her. Lacon Traynor swoops in to help her after she discovers the body of her ex-husband in her bed and sticks by her side from then forward.Marissa is pulled into even bigger plots than she could have imagined, by the head of organized crime- Vito Anastasia. He has decided Marissa is the woman he wants to work for him as a lover and a physician. As Anastasia controls people in powerful places, Marissa is left able to trust only one person- Lacon- and luckily, he will not let her out of his sight. Together, they try to work with the police and stay alive, even when everything seems to be conspiring against them.Overall, it's a solid romantic suspense. I felt like I didn't really get into the mindset of the major characters, particularly Lacon and Anastasia. The motives didn't always feel readily apparent and so I had a hard time getting into the thriller aspects of the book. In terms of the romance, it takes a backseat to the main plot, but when it is brought to the forefront, it's done pretty well. The flow of the book is great, and it's a pretty fast read- I read it in an afternoon easily! I never felt lost in the plot, though I did wish I had more insight into Lacon and Anastasia to really get into it more.Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher through netgalley. I like a book with strong female lead and sexy, strong male characters. Body of Evidence delivers. Dr. Marissa Frasier and Colby Agency investigator Lacon Traynor are exactly that. The type of characters you hope you can keep reading about in future books. I like Debra Webbs style ofwriting.Dr. Frasier, Issy, wakes up to find her ex-husband lying dead next to her. After threatening to kill her the night before he has been murdered in her bed. Knowing someone came into her home, violated her space and shot him right next to her without her hearing terrifies her. She is a light sleeper how could this happen? She hires Colby Agency and they send Lancor Traynor, a highly skilled investigator and protection expert from Texas. It is a bit distracting staying in the safe house with such a viral strong handsome man wearing cowboy boots. Her life as a doctor and her pain after her divorce left her little time or desire to date. When they find out the mob is involved she is shocked. What her ex-husband could have been involved in and why are they now after her terrifies her. Lancor and Issy need to clear her name. Not knowing who on the police force they can trust not to be in the mob bosses pocket. Issy is spunky and let's the mob boss know she won't be pushed around. Knowing she can be makes Lancor very determined to solve this as fast as possible to keep them both alive.
