Dines D'Souza is a good writer, and makes many good points in this book.There is a fundamental flaw in his argument, however. I do not agree with D'Souza that everything that has ever occurred or will ever occur happens according to God's will. In other words, bad things do not happen because it is God's will that they happen.Theodicy is much easier if we take the biblical story at face value. Lucifer rebelled against God, humans followed suit, and our suffering is a direct result of his and our rebellion. As David Bentley Hart, put it, "As for comfort, when we seek it, I can imagine none greater than the happy knowledge that when I see the death of a child I do not see the face of God, but the face of His enemy."A second point I would like to make is that, as a scientist, I find it risky to make sweeping theological statements based on scientific theories. The biggest, most obvious problem is that even highly regarded scientific theories can be undone over the course of a generation or two. Another problem is that, while the anthropic principle and the fine-tuning of the universe may point us to God's wisdom and creative power, we must go to the Bible to understand the metaphysical (as opposed to mechanistic) "why" behind the suffering caused by natural disasters.Ultimately, D'Souza's book is another spin on the old argument that suffering exists because this is the best universe God could possibly create; this argument places the blame for suffering squarely on God. The God I serve is greater than this by far--my God created a perfect universe which has been destroyed by selfishness, and He has promised to restore the universe to a perfect state once again and eliminate suffering for eternity.

In Godforsaken, Dinesh D'Souza takes these questions head on: Does God act like a tyrant? Is God really responsible for the evil in this world? Why is there suffering in the world? For the first time ever, Dinesh D'Souza approaches this topic with historical and scientific proof and presents to the reader why God is truly worthy of our worship and love.Godforsaken was a carefully researched book that really spoke to both the intellectual and emotional side of any person, Christian or otherwise. Dinesh D'Souza broke his book into six parts. The first part is an introduction to the reality of suffering in this world and how all people groups everywhere at some point both experience and struggle with suffering and evil. The second part quickly yet thoroughly analyzes the typical Christian and atheist both approach the conundrum of how a good God can exist and yet the reality that there is evil and suffering in this world. This part also shows how each Christian and atheist argument is flawed and cannot truly satisfy people's questions about evil and suffering. The third part addresses the moral evils that exist in this world as pertains to both people's free will, God's sovereignty, and the consequences of a fallen world. The fourth part of Godforsaken looks at the crimes that occur in nature and how those relate to the power and character of God. The fifth part deeply analyzes the character of God and how the evil and suffering in the world do not contradict the characteristics of God or lead to the conclusion that a loving God does not exist. Finally, the book concludes in the sixth part by emphasizing that we are not godforsaken, but rather, loved and ultimately saved by the God of mercy and grace.Godforsaken is written in a way that is both enjoyable and stimulating. I was able to understand what the author was saying and still think critically about whether or not I agreed with his points. I liked D'Souza's organization of the book and his liberal use of quotes, research, and his experiences to drive home and complement what he was saying. I also appreciated his critique of atheist arguments about God and suffering, and his inclusion of his own experiences debating with world renowned atheists.Overall, I thought Godforsaken was well written, organized, intellectually stimulating, and one of the best arguments and discussion on God, evil, and suffering that I have ever read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants an intellectual yet emotionally resounding explanation of evil and suffering.

"God Forsaken" by Dinesh D'Souza is a brilliant read. I chose to read it as part of Tyndale House Publisher's summer reading program--an opportunity to earn free books! But I'm so thankful for this prompting. I loved this book!The book has multiple purposes, clearly noted throughout and summarized in the concluding chapter. (My high school English teacher would have loved D'Souza's perfect research paper presentation skills. I know I appreciated them; they made the flow of his ideas so easy to follow. But that's beside the point. The content of this book is incredible.)Simply put, D'Souza comprehensively and systematically tackles all of the atheist arguments against the existence of God while also helping Christians understand why bad things happen to good people and how to cope with the resulting suffering all within the pages of one 13 chapter book. He refutes the arguments of atheists such as Nietzsche and Hawking while expanding upon the thoughts of C.S. Lewis and other great Christian thinkers who have written on this topic. His research is thorough and his personal ideas are clear. (He lost me for a little while at the beginning of Chapter 10, but then came at his point from another angle and brought me on board again.)Those who enjoy absorbing new thoughts on these continuing debates, the existence of God and the problem of suffering, will most definitely want to read D'Souza's new book.

Full disclosure: I know Stephanie and Joshua. So of course I bought their book when it came out. That’s what supportive friends do. I had no idea that it was going to be as good as it is. I started reading it (gotta be able to say something knowledgeable when they ask, right?) and I swear, I couldn’t put it down. I read a fair amount of entertaining travel books and this ranks up there with my favorites. I love the format, seeing each experience from both points of view. I love that the stories take precedence but it’s also a useful travel guide. I laughed out loud every few pages and found myself intrigued and interested in both Taiwan and their adventures there. After reading this, I can kinda understand Joshua’s obsession with Taiwan. It certainly made ME want to go. Luckily, I know someone who lives there....

Wow. I picked up this book to glean a little insight into Taiwan, a place that has always fascinated me. Whether you are a newcomer to Taiwan or an old hand, Formosa Moon has a little bit of everything for you. It's written in a very interesting way, alternating between a fresh off the boat female and a Taiwan-loving long timer (ish) male, trying to show why he loves Taiwan. There were plenty of new places they visited that made me want to go check them out, and a lot of interesting tales along the way. When the book was over, I really wanted to know what happened next. I guess I'll have to wait for Formosa Moon II.

I was hoping for more day hikes NOT in Yosemite. The only one listed is devil's postpile.

Great trail descriptions and well organized. Clearly the other knows the trail well and has lots of great tips. However, the major problem with this being a book of section hikes is that most of the sections are so difficult logistically that they might as well be impossible. Many of the sections have you entering on the West Side and exiting on the East or vice versa. This makes it nearly impossible for anyone without a private plane waiting for them to spirit them back over the Sierras. In some places it would've been more feasible to at least connect to two eastern trailheads on some of the stretches. What were the authors thinking?

This latest in the Gray Man series is lacking some of the zest that was in the two previous books in the series. This author started out with pure action - as I wrote in a previous review of those earlier works - think Mack Bolan from the 1970's - this author evolved into something much better - however, he has slipped just a bit with this book, Agent in Place.Also, he barely mentions the gear that the characters in the book use, which he had done a masterful job of in his prior books in this series. Always nice to know what gear is getting the nod from the action boys, that Greaney interviews.In this novel, our Gray Man, has no romantic involvements and his two women from the prior book are mentioned only in passing.To me the plot was a little thin, but with action novels one does not expect a lot, but I had gotten used to more in the last few books in this series.The plot is pretty straight forward - the Gray Man is hired to "rescue" the mistress of the leader of a Middle-Eastern country, so, she can be used to help bring about regime change - which of course goes totally sideways and ends up with "our hero" having to travel to the Middle-East on another rescue missing, plus more.The Gray Man is as close as we can currently get to a real "Matt Helm" type of character, but still it was bothersome for the Gray Man to be moralizing about the tactics used by some of the military contractors.If you are into the series - you have to buy this one, just to stay current. If you are not into the series yet - buy them all and read them in order of publication.

Set for the most part in Syria, the story is not only compelling, it mirrors current events and actually helped me understand the dynamics of the Iran, Syrian, Russian connections. "The Gray Man" series never disappoints. I love Court Gentry because he never takes himself too seriously but conveys the requisite seriousness for an "action hero." Great read. You will not want to put the book down!

The writing was incredible and realistic. “Agent in Place” is the 7th book in a series about the Gray Man, Court Gentry, who was a former Christian-In-Action, who continues to provide services to the Agency, as well as his own contract assignments. His assignments are frequently assassinations.Supporters of the Free Syrian Army are in exile in Paris. They are well funded and are focused on bringing down Syrian President Ahmed Azzam (aka Bashar al-Assad). They learn that Ahmed has a mistress, who is a Spanish model and modeling in Paris. Arrangements are made with Court Gentry to kidnap Bianca Medina, as they know that she knows about a meeting taken in Tehran, that should the Russians discover, perhaps would end the dictatorship of Ahmed.Court is successful in the kidnapping, only that it was not easy and was most certainly bloody. At the same time the wife of Ahmed, Shakira al-Azzam (Asma al-Assad) is having an affair with her Swiss financial advisor, and he is a dangerous man that is wanted throughout Europe. Shakira learns of her husband’s mistress and wants Bianca killed while in Europe. The Free Syrian supporters in Europe learn that Bianca has a son, by Ahmed, in Damascus and refuses to help their cause, unless her son can be brought to Europe.Once again Court is called upon, as they need him to go to Syria and snatch the child. Now, who would be crazy enough to go to Syria and snatch the son of the president? Well, that would be Court Gentry, who is not a typical man, and has abilities that most could only dream about.For this reader, reading this novel, it felt like being back on the streets of Damascus. And, what is most interesting is that this novel is in real time, in that the war being fought by several groups is realistically written. It is today’s news. Prior to writing the Gray Man series, Mark Greaney had coauthored the late Tom Clancy novels. While this reader has thoughts about franchising a dead man’s name for novels, Mark Greaney, in his own name, is simply an exceptional writer of action & adventure novels. Time to go on Amazon and order the six previous Gray Man novels.

While he's waiting for his next assignment with them Gentry takes a job through another group. That's why you will find him sitting in the audience at a top designers fashion show in Paris. Take a deep breath during this sequence of events because from here on out this book is one perilous mission after another.If you are looking for fast paced action, you will have located your target with this story. Greaney has allowed the character of Court Gentry to grow and change over the years so watching how the agent operates in such a hostile environment and yet maintain his values is something I enjoy very much. The political quagmire in the Syria of this novel was complicated to the extreme and yet I'm sure Greaney is using information he gets from his research to let us know what it's like just to survive in a country constantly at war within its borders. As always I learn some great information about the intelligence tradecraft and weaponry from reading one of these novels. I was especially interested in the sniper weapon and shooter capability aspects.While the Court Gentry books are all written to be standalone novels (and this one is no exception) I hope you will enjoy this one so much you will want to go back and pick up the first book (The Gray Man). I have read that first book three times and am still impressed with the intricacy of the plotting. Book seven continues that fine plotting legacy.
