About the Author

Count Leo Tolstoy was born on September 9, 1828, in Yasnaya Polyana, Russia. Orphaned at nine, he was brought up by an elderly aunt and educated by French tutors until he matriculated at Kazan University in 1844. In 1847, he gave up his studies and, after several aimless years, volunteered for military duty in the army, serving as a junior officer in the Crimean War before retiring in 1857. In 1862, Tolstoy married Sophie Behrs, a marriage that was to become, for him, bitterly unhappy. His diary, started in 1847, was used for self-study and self-criticism; it served as the source from which he drew much of the material that appeared not only in his great novels War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877), but also in his shorter works. Seeking religious justification for his life, Tolstoy evolved a new Christianity based upon his own interpretation of the Gospels. Yasnaya Polyana became a mecca for his many converts At the age of eighty-two, while away from home, the writer suffered a break down in his health in Astapovo, Riazan, and he died there on November 20, 1910.Ronald Wilks studied Russian language and literature at Trinity College, Cambridge, and later Russian literature at London University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1972. He has also translated ‘The Little Demon’ by Sologub and, for Penguin Classics, My Childhood, My Apprenticeship and My Universities by Gorky, The Golovlyov Family by Saltykov-Shchedrin and four volumes of stories by Chekhov: The Kiss and Other Stories, The Duel and Other Stories, The Party and Other Stories and The Fiancée and Other Stories.

I love Tolstoy's novels for adults, but discovered a few years ago that he also wrote stories for children. This is a particular favorite of mine that I have seen in several editions. This is, however, the most attractive of them all. In a world in which greed seems to be regarded as acceptable, this little story charmingly and cleverly illuminates why it is indeed one of the Seven Deadly Sins.

Quite interesting generally, but there are some stories I simply don't understand.I found several of the stories to be well written and beautiful, particularly those with a clear Christian/moral basis. I particularly enjoyed the title story and "What Men Live By". These two stories showed a real grasp of human nature and presented memorable insights.On the other hand, the military stories are hard to read and the language is basically 19th century gargon to me. I'd love to see a modern version of "The Two Hussars" for example, where a more current setting and scenario may help to clarify what the story is about. I stopped reading "the Woodfelling" about half-way through because it just wasn't going anywhere in my opinion.I'll buy it again to be honest, because there are a few gems in it...and who knows, maybe I'll re-read the other stories in a few years and be better able to grasp their meaning.

Communicates a powerful lesson and warning that can lead to meaningful reflection and evaluation of one’s life and what we strive for. Facilitates an opportunity to reflect on what we value most in life, whether our actions are aligned with that, and whether we will be able to look back on our lives and say that we did something that mattered. The short story method of delivering the moral message is very effective and memorable and Tolstoy has a real way of hitting you with the imagery to make that lesson come to life.

This book was simple and short, yet powerfully rich in content. I wasn’t expecting the finale. It touched me in a way that has made me rethink my reasons for seeking ambition.

Damn that Michael Connelly. I stayed up reading until 2:30 in the morning because I wanted to finish 'The Concrete Blonde'. In Harry Bosch's third adventure in the series, the detective is standing trial for his actions in killing a serial killer four years earlier. When the police receive a note from the supposedly dead killer, it throws Bosch's world into utter chaos. He's certain that the Dollmaker was the guilty party, but how do they explain the new note with directions to the discovery of another victim buried in concrete?The story takes place in 1994 Los Angeles when the 1991 Rodney King beating by police and the ensuing 1992 riots are still fresh in the city's minds. Police conduct is being held under a constant microscope. It was a time when plenty of people smoked and driving while drunk didn't seem to be that big a deal. Bosch has been a loner most of his life but, in this story, finds himself in an intimate relationship with a woman whose husband was murdered in the previous Harry Bosch mystery entitled 'The Black Ice'. Struggling with multiple murder suspects, the porno industry, a complex romantic relationship, police politics and a gripping court room drama delivers a hard-to-put-down novel. Also, Mr. Connelly's cynical presentation of the legal system would've made Charles Dickens proud. There were times when I thought some of the situations wouldn't have been so stressful in the story if everyone back then had cell phones like we do today.It is not necessary to have read the two previous works entitled 'The Black Echo' and 'The Black Ice' but would help you in getting a better understanding of what makes Harry Bosch tick. The ex-reporter turned author does an excellent job of keeping the reader guessing and on the edge of their seats until the very end. Being a recent reader of the Harry Bosch series, I can see why Mr. Connelly's protagonist is so popular.

I read this a long time ago. It was great then, but it was so much better when I re-read it it order. I got the Bosch bug again watching the series online. I thought that I had all of the books, so I started reading them again from the beginning. The author ties the plotline to real events to provide a real time reference to the plot. The plot is filled with a lot of subtle undercurrents, station politics, department politics, that are thematic and indicative of Bosch's struggle with the establishment and how it operates. If one thing ties all of the Bosch novels together it's the man-on-the-outside struggle against the political powers in the department and LA government. There are others, too, like Jazz. If you've ever been curious about the music Bosch listens to, check it out. I've found tons of it available on Amazon Prime Music.

Connelly is easily my favorite author!!! I have read everything since The Lincoln Lawyer and have dipped back to his earlier works as well. The cover and the title of The Concrete Blonde have intrigued me for years, but I had never quite gotten to it until now.The third in the Bosch series finds Bosch on trial for wrongfully killing The Dollmaker, a serial killler who preyed on prostitutes and porn actresses in Los Angeles. During his trial (four years after the kill), a new victim is discovered that casts doubt on whether Bosch killed the wrong man. From there, the plot twists and turns as the trial continues and a concurrent investigation tries to figure out the truth about The Dollmaker.To say more would be a spoiler, but I can say that this is one of the very best in an excellent body of work from Michael Connelly--the best crime fiction writer ever.

Each one so far is better than the last.You need to read the first one at least so you will really get what Bosch’s Vietnam Tunnel Rat service did to him and how it helps him on the job now.As in real life, there are times when the street needs a gunslinger mentality out there. When" you know what”, hits the "Westinghouse", you want people who can stop it. There is real evil in this world, and there is only a “Thin Blue Line” that prevents that evil from entering the lives of everyday people. I read them all in order and when I finished the last one , I started again at the beginning and read them all again. I've read them all in order three times now.Then I saw the Sharpe's Rifles series on PBS. I started reading all the Cornwell series and independent novels. I read all the Sharpe novels, many several times. I've read them all.I seem to see the TV show especially Brtish TV shows and get started on the book series about the Neapolitanic Wars. What was going on?Now I can relax. Bosch isn't British but i'm totally hooked on these novels. I've only read three so far but I have seen my doom. I will read all of them - probably more than once. Oh well, at least I know where I'll be and what I'll be doing this next year.My advice to others. Get a good chair. Connelly writes 500 page novels and It's very damn hard to keep from reading them in one sitting. I fall sleep in my reading chair and start reading again when I wake up.

I like the overall plot and the characters. What I don't like is that it's a constant uphill slog: almost always under attack, running out of ammo, endless attackers, never time to rest. The characters rarely sleep or eat, or get a chance to catch their breath. There has to be a balance of good vs. bad but this read is mostly bad, and it's given me reader fatigue. Violence drives the story more than logical, thought-out action. Not sure if I'll continue reading this series.

Talk about a wild ride, from page one on and on. The excitement of a rollercoaster as Stacker fights for his life and to avenge his wife's murder. Running with a little luck and a whole lot of muscle he makes it onto a starship and heads for Earth. Bad move as we find him fighting the Trife who obliterated the people of Earth or at least m o st of them. And now they are his enemy along with a whole lot of others he met along the way. Fast paced and full of emotion as well as heart stopping tretchery. Wow I'm still hyped.

Writes a hell of a good book! Great characters, a lot of action and a surprising twist. At least surprising to me, I did not see it coming. Read this author.

Somewhat fun but not a complete book. Clearly, the object is for you to keep reading the next (and next) book to hopefully find out what happens. Not excited enough to take the ride. One and done.

I really enjoyed the Forgotten series (predecessor to this series) and was excited to see that Forbes was continuing the series. The story lines are great with twists and turns that make me keep reading long after I should’ve. The characters are well defined and interesting to follow. I can’t wait for the next book in the series to come out

To bad you cannot string more than a few words together without interrupting the story flow with unneeded, unnecessary, and totally uncalled for vulgarities. You turn what could have been an enjoyable read into a struggle to finish the story and leave your audience wondering if it was worth the effort.

Refreshing change of perspective in a genre that seems to have become generic. Written from the other side of the mirror M.R. Forbes makes us look at ourselves and our motivations in a new light. Highly reccomend this book, heading over to get next, see you all in a bit, if I survive.

This is the most informative and disturbing book I have ever read. It appears to be extremely well researched and documented, though I didn’t check out the accuracy of the footnotes. Some takeaways: (1) The Rothschilds, the Morgans, the Rockefellers, and a few others, control this country, most of its media and its significant politicians, through their control of a cartel deceptively called the Federal Reserve System. (2) The same Rothschilds, and others, control other major economic powers through parallel control of their central banks, media, and politicians. (3) Despite our “Founding Fathers’” vehement opposition to any central bank or government-issued paper money, their efforts to ban it constitutionally have been circumvented. (4) Politicians, with few exceptions, cannot resist the appeal of being able to issue “fiat” (not backed by anything of value, therefore being able to be produced in ever expanding masses until that particular economy eventually collapses) money, because it seems much less painful than levying taxes, and virtually none of their electorate realize that its issuance enables the politicians to spend much more than they could ever raise through taxation while at the same time reducing the value of the citizens’ savings, salaries, pensions, etc. (5) “Fractional reserves” enable banks to loan out close to 10 times the value of their real assets, dramatically increasing the amount of ever-increasing currency in circulation and proportionately cheapening its currency (therefore up to 10 times the country’s recently doubled national debt), and to earn interest on each of those multiples loaned. (6) The Rothschilds and their fellow collaborators have learned that nothing inspires a country to engage in the massive issuance of fiat money like war, and they have therefore helped develop and funded “enemy” powers where none existed, then fostered wars among them, then financed both sides of those wars, then used their control of media to entice the ignorant public into believing in those wars, and reaped huge spoils from those wars, not only in interest on loans, but in lucrative commercial monopolies received for their troubles. (7) Groups of greedy (understatement) “idealists” (of which Cecil Rhodes may be considered a prime initiator) began before World War I working toward a single, socialist/communist autocratic world government which would impose the wonders of the elitist British culture on all the world (including the Fabians and, in the US, members of the Council on Foreign Relations) which they, of course, would control. (8) The economic and military strength of the US makes it difficult to subjugate to such a plan, so they need it (through its banks) to, i.a., make massive “loans” (with no expectation of principal repayment but with government [US taxpayers] guarantees) to less affluent countries, thereby dramatically economically and militarily weakening the US while distributing its wealth (on which they collect interest) to the less developed nations with examples like the US’s recent funding of Mexican drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico, and Brazil’s drilling for oil off its coast, while refusing to allow US drilling in the Gulf for “environmental” reasons, and blocking two pipelines that would have been environmentally far safer and better for the US economy and national security. Of course, this should be required reading in every high school and college, but then, consider the odds that such an idea would even be considered in the US “academic” institutions of today.I just went back and skimmed the 1-star and 2-star reviews, looking for a scholarly refutation of the author's arguments and analysis,. A few said they disagreed, or that the author Cherry picked, but offered nothing more. If all this we're refutable, wouldn't someone have done so?

As a former ex-USSR citizen, I always wondered why wars were fought. Every molecule of my brain refused to believe that people did it for pure altruistic and patriotic reasons. This book puts it right:* Why America fought in WW1* Why Russian revolutions occurred and who benefited from those* Why people in other countries are so gullible when receiving foreign aid.* How the large bankers took advantage of those countries by legalizing smuggling, just for them, not the common folkAnd most importantly:* How the common US folk is paying for all of it out of its own pocket through the hidden tax of inflation.A true eye opener. Gotta love America for letting a writer publish such an indispensable journey into history political deceit. Other countries like Russia would have probably made the author disappear, the way it has always been done.A word of caution:This book may make you angry. However please do understand that everything it talks about happened, happens, and will continue to happen so long as the earth is populated. Just accept it and find a way to be prepared for the future, as the past always repeats itself.

It is anathema to humanity, God, and America. It is the polar opposite of The Constitution, it was warned about in the Constitution, and it is the reason why many including JFK have perished for trying to remove it. America and many other nations will be truly healthy and free until central banking and central bankers are permanently removed.If you are interested in critical thinking and want to really understand why things are happening and who really controls our world, I strongly suggest that you read this book.You will never forget the lessons that it teaches.

If you want to understand what's really going on with our economy, the Fed, and the role of governments in monetary policy, you'll definitely want to make the time investment to read this. I do not find conspiracy theories intriguing - I take no delight in them. In fact, criminals colluding together in secret to commit acts of evil make my blood boil! This book is a well-written expose. It is the farthest thing from conspiracy theory - it's well-documented and insightfully written. In a world where truth is hard to find, this book is a breath of fresh air. If you are a seeker of truth, you will definitely find it in these pages. Just know that the old Bible verse is right - "with much wisdom is much sorrow, as knowledge increases, grief increases." You're not gonna like what you read, but you will better off for knowing this material!

If you don't read this book at least twice you will not have the foggiest idea how our economic system got to where it is. You will not understand how to fix it before the next economic crash occurs. The Federal reserve was created to control the monetary system for the group who came to Jeckyll Island Georgia. Their decendants continue through the Federal Reserve System to control the money supply today.
