About the Author

Alexis Okeowo is a staff writer for the New Yorker and a fellow at New America. Her work has appeared in the New Yorker, the New York Times Magazine, the Financial Times, Time, and Fortune, among many other publications. The daughter of immigrant parents, Okeowo grew up in Alabama and attended Princeton University. She was based in Lagos, Nigeria, from 2012 to 2015, and now lives in Brooklyn.

A Moonless, Starless Sky is a thoughtfully written book, capturing the perspectives of people whose stories needed to be told but hadn’t yet been brought into the light. Alexis Okeowo uncovers the fascinating and unique experiences of those combating extremism, terror, racism, and/or misogyny in four African countries. These include a Ugandan woman abducted by the LRA who marries the former child soldier who raped her; an activist in Mauritania who seeks to bring visibility to and demolish the practice of slavery in his country; a man in Nigeria who risks his life leading a local militia to combat Boko Haram; and a young woman who receives death threats from Al-Shabaab for playing basketball in Somalia. A talented journalist, Okeowo goes beyond the word and stylistic limits of the article to delve much deeper into the lives of the people featured in her book, often to her own emotional detriment. The book is told in two sets of four chapters. The first four chapters end with very beautifully written cliffhangers that leave the reader yearning to learn about the fates of the people whose stories have been captured. The second set provides some semblance of resolution, but these are real people who continue to lead their lives in very precarious and unpredictable circumstances.The book is very accessible for those who haven’t read much about Africa and is a great entry point for those who would like to learn more about a diverse set of countries filled with stories of tragedy, struggle, bravery, and, ultimately, hope. Thanks to Alexis Okeowo for her courage in locating and unveiling some of these stories and for presenting them in such a meaningful way.

For some reason the first 50 or 60 pages of this book went really fast for me. I was totally in to the stories about each of the individuals Okeowo writes about. Then, I’m not sure what happened, the book became a bit of a chore to finish. First, parts of it seemed repetitive. Second, oddly enough I felt like I didn’t care (as much as I should have) about the people in the book. Of course I cared about them in that what they’ve been through is horrible, unjust, unfair, and so supremely wrong there are just no words. So, I cared, but I didn’t identify, which I think is really what the author wanted for the readers of this book, ie, to see themselves in the people of this book.

There are no mutants here, just ordinary humans who have made choices to deny easy victory to forces seeking to destroy them. And the way that Ms. Okeowo approaches them and tells their stories is quite simply humane. Their stories are compelling, but not embellished. This is all a non-fiction reader could want.

Simply transformative. Alexis lifts up the lives and narratives of people that nearly all other journalists overlook, and in so doing restores a part of our humanity we weren't even aware that we lost. Completely breathtaking.

An interesting look at the intimate lives of those who have endured years of turmoil plus historical facts about the evolution of the political environment.

Well written, touching stories of people in Africa confronting injustice. I travel to Rwanda each year to visit friends. I found this book interesting and informative.

Beautiful stories that are beautifully written. Much care was taken in producing this work. A must read for Africanists and general readers alike.

This is the conclusion to Lana and Blake's story. Full of emotional twists and turns. This book shows that once you get your HEA there are more obstacles to overcome. The books title explains it all. Love's Sacrifice. What are you willing to sacrifice to save your HEA, your child, your lover. If you have to make an unbearable choice, can you. I feel the series wrapped things up pretty well and I was happy with it. Did leave some loose ends to create books for other characters you had met along the way and also the possibility to revisit Lana and Blake If their son gets his own book and I hope he does somewhere down the road. Dark, sexy and emotional. It's hard to say goodbye to Lana and Blake.

I have to admit, I am glad to finally reach the end of this series. Or is it? I can still see more to this story. It didn't grab me like others, and at times I struggled to reach the end of the book, but that is not to say it isn't a good story. It is. I just go a little blank when I get an overload of information, and I feel the book gets off track too many times. I do however Love the Lana and Blake characters, I just am unsure how I feel about their story. Perhaps that is what the writer is aiming for?

You've read the first four books - well three, four wasn't Blake & Lana - this one left me wanting. Wanting better understanding of time lines. Wanting a better edited version - chapters 19 & 20 were the same. Things you find at the end of a book were between chapters, twice it had me think that I had reached a very unsatisfactory ending. Wanting more 'true to character' responses. There is no way Blake doesn't find Sorab without Victoria's phone call, NONE. Just didn't do it for me.

Revenge is the poison that some women use to hurt those who spurned them.Be prepared for the twists and turns in this story. Lives are in peril and our lovers will need to stay true to each other in order to survive this last obstacle in their lives.A mother's love is bountiful. She will never give up if one her children are in peril. This is an amazing conclusion to this series.

I really liked the first 3 books, the 4th was an interesting “break”, being told from a friend’s perspective, but this 5th book took some very strange turns that I was not completely on board with. I’m glad I read the entire series, but this last book was really a stretch for me.

I have a love/hate relationship with Ms. Le Carre's stories; the characterizations are fabulous, really fleshed out and the plot is sophisticated enough to keep my attention. Thus author has an...interesting view of the uber rich. It works well for this story.But...Is Geraldine "Gerry" or "Jerry"? Do these people ever use contractions? And finally, why would Julie be privy to the "secret" but not Lana?While I hope that there'll be a fifth installment of these books, it had better reveal more and tie up the loose ends.

I couldn't put these five books down. Georgia is an amazing writer. I'm some stories the erotica just gets boring but not here. You want to find out what is happening next but you will not want to miss a single beautifully written word that she writes. I'm not giving you the plot line. Everyone has written that. What you need to know is that she will soon a spell as you read.

As always Georgia out done herself in this series. The sexy enigmatic Blake's character came out with a vengeance and the sweet Lana became strong willed to fight for her little family. The struggles of human feelings are expressed deeply in this series which makes it more interesting in many levels. Power, greed, love, and freedom are the main factors that surrounds this series and it's basically what we humans deal with in our everyday lives. A wonderfully written story that hooked my five year old grandson. The story is a great introduction to silent e, vowel substitution and compound words. As a former educator, I was delighted!

Wonderful wordplay and delightfully creative artwork combine to make this a favorite of both my granddaughter and myself. Highly recommended!!

I have a niece in second grade that will enjoy reading this book. I enjoyed reading about the way the Word Wrangler wrangled words.

This is a really cute book that also teaches beginning readers in a fun (and funny) way. It also has a nice message. Kids love it and it has become a favorite before bedtime read.

Sayers.The latest release in the Plough Publishing series celebrating the gospel in a range of writers is The Gospel in Dorothy L. Sayers. This anthology curates selections from all genres in chapters focused on particular topics like judgment, equality, creativity, and the cross. In some cases, entire essays are reprinted, like her powerful and satirical essay, “The Dogma is the Drama.” In other cases, the editor has selected a few paragraphs from a novel, or a scene from a play.With the growing interest in Sayers studies, this is a timely and helpful volume. For those who have already come to appreciate her work, The Gospel in Dorothy L. Sayers offers buffet to sample some of her offerings. Also, the book can make a handy reference volume (much like books of quotes by Chesterton and Lewis) since it can be hard to remember just where and exactly how Sayers said something in one the books one has read. The editor has done well to select many of the most significant passages, such that this book may serve as a shortcut for those writing on Dorothy L. “The Gospel in Dorothy L. Sayers” (Plough, 2018) is enigmatic, even cryptic at best. She was a writer of detective novels which seemingly had nothing to do with religion, yet she viewed her essays, critical writings and poetry as reflections of the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. She suggests that the popularity of detective novels among clergy and others exists for this very reason, and likes the idea that “your sin will find you out!”I laughed a lot as I read “The Gospel in Dorothy L. Sayers” published by Plough, because, as a retired clergyman I had come to some of the same conclusions about religion in my generation as she did in hers considering she was born in 1893. It is said that she never emphasized the differences between Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic or Anglo Catholics of which her father was a clergyman in the Church of England, but rather sought out their similarities and that these were evident or implicit in her writings. Her works were compared to those of C. S. Lewis who also wrote “A Panegyric for Dorothy L. Sayers,” a word I had to look up (with thanks to Wikipedia.) Having spent a number of years on the staffs of two state Councils of Churches, her insights brought back many memories as I drifted in and out of all things Protestant and even Roman Catholic during those years following Vatican II. Criticism comes easily from those perspectives.So- what she says to us today has hardly evaporated into history. A treasure. A book to read and reread and ponder. Dorothy L. Sayers—mystery writer, essayist, playwright, apologist, translator—an incredibly talented lady.
