It's filled with paintings and the reference photographs from the Norman Rockwell Museum.Apparently, Rockwell used live models for all of his work. Every model will be meticulously costumed and posed until he could get his perfect composition. Preparing the shot almost seems like an art form itself as he tirelessly puts in all the details required, sometimes to the extend of staging elaborate settings, like deciding the items to display on the table behind models. Every painting is well conceived and composed in his mind even before he lays paint on canvas. If you've read any biography of him, you won't be surprised by his dedication.Included in this book is a great selection of his paintings and the photos he used, put side by side for comparison. The author Ron Schick has done a great job providing commentary to all the illustrations, through interviews with people who have worked with Rockwell. There's plenty of insight and a few lessons to be learned on posing models. You'll see what are the details Rockwell retains and those that he leaves out.This is an inspiring book recommended to all admirers of Norman Rockwell's paintings, and to artists who want to learn more on using references from the master painter.(More pictures are available on my blog. There have been many books on Norman Rockwell over the years, but Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera is the first to shed light upon the reference photographs from which he often painted. Published in 2009 this book features a selection of images from among some 18,000 black and white negatives that are held by the Norman Rockwell Museum at Stockbridge, Massachusetts.Admirers of Rockwell's art should consider this book unmissable, given the fresh ground that it covers. It will also have some appeal to illustrators and portraitists, because of the description and examples provided on Rockwell's working methods.Why did someone with such a sharp drawing and drafting ability take such heavy recourse to use of photography? It should be understood that Norman Rockwell laboured under huge pressure to produce paintings at a rapid rate to meet deadlines of magazine editors and to satisfy other lucrative commercial commissions for his art. To spare time from doing dozens of preparatory drawings for each painting, Rockwell eventually began instead to use photographs and select among them before choosing a final composition. The photos did not displace the need for models, costumes, props or any of the rigour of painting preparation, like sketches and colour studies. But these snapshots did ensure great efficiencies: they saved re-sittings by models, avoided movements of sunlight; and made possible a far more phenomenal output in one man's career than otherwise could have been conceivable.Author Ron Schick, an expert in photographic art, explains the considerable efforts that went into composing the photos and what Rockwell was aiming to conjure up. It is a tale of an artist scouting locations, assembling props, and amusingly positioning and directing the models like actors in a play. This book shows some of the tricks used by Rockwell for getting the best out of life models, including using stacks of books to support the feet of figures as they feigning leaps, running, or other exertions "in motion". We also see how folding screens in varying shades were used to help the artist accurately capture the tones and outline of a model, without distraction from background clutter.The book is well designed. The author and publishers juxtapose paintings opposite source photographs, sometimes showing how several separately photographed models might be assembled on canvas into one composition. It becomes apparent how the artist selectively modified and spliced poses, or added or varied details in clothing and props, to drive the narrative power of his final paintings.The visual extravaganza in this book is well supported by pithy and pertinent stories about the featured artworks, spiced up with quotes from Rockwell, his models and other associates (Rockwell was a little abashed at his use of photography, but he has written several accounts of his working methods for the benefit of fellow illustrators who have sought to learn his secrets). Schick threads the book together with writing of his own that is informative and perceptive. The book is a good length at over 200 pages, but Rockwell was such a prolific artist that it is hard not to wish for even more of his paintings in this enjoyable monograph. I've been a fan of Norman Rockwell's art for many years and collected quite a few books about him and his work. I knew Rockwell took advantage of photographs to prepare his paintings and illustrations, but not to the extent presented in this book. It's a fascinating look behind the scenes at Rockwell's creative process and efforts to be authentic. It's a welcome addition to my library.

It would be hard to find a better candidate for an American Sherlock Holmes than Rockwell, or more Holmesian painter, character wise at least.

Tom is a sought-after speaker who presents internationally for schools and districts. He has worked extensively throughout North America, as well as in Vietnam, Myanmar, China, Thailand, Japan, India, Qatar, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates. He earned a teaching degree from Boise State University and a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of British Columbia. Garnet Hillman is an educator, coach, writer, presenter, and learner. She was a Spanish teacher at Lockport Township High School and currently serves as an instructional coach at Caruso Middle School, both in Illinois. She consults around the country on the topics of assessment, grading, and student motivation. A passionate educator, Garnet values student learning above all else. SUCH a great read! As an educator, I've been looking for a "how to" book that is doable. This is it!

I appreciated that the authors provided the rational for standards based learning and provided practical tips for how to get there. This book doesn't feel preachy, but instead provides options for teachers in the classroom. Wherever you might be on your teaching and assessment journey, there is something in this book for you.

The book is outstanding. We moved to standards-based grading this year so this book is assisting us in our continuous learning process. The first chapter, Standards Based learning in action, is outstanding. I love the section on creating a standards-based classroom: communicating the standards and learning targets, explaining why they are important, and involving students in the learning process. At our school, we wanted to align our instruction, assessment, and grading. This book shows you the way! The next few chapters break down high-leverage strategies like formative assessment, feedback, and self-assessment. The author discusses the research behind each strategy, details each action step, and gives steps to get started. Chapter 8 is about redos, retakes, and reassessment. The gives steps and suggestions for talking to parents, getting started, and questions for learning teams. I love Chapter 9 on Proficiency Scales and rubrics in action. I highly recommend this book.

A well written insightful story that reveals a great deal about the human psyche and how we cope with "belonging". Clearly told, with great reflection, regarding the author's discovery that his dad wasn't his biological father. Quite moving. The story deals with the struggle the author had following the surprise revelation following a DNA test, and how he goes about learning about his newly discovered bio father, all while attempting to be considerate of his 95 year old mother's feelings. A wonderful "human" story. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

I read about this book before it came out. I was excited to read it. I read it straight through at one sitting. As an adoptee who reunited on my maternal side 33 years ago and still seeking my paternal side, I was constantly frustrated with the author. I understand he was stunned, disappointed, grieving and considerate of other peoples feelings. However, I found it exasperating that he didn't actually look at the genetic information right in front on him. He gave a distant cousin a flippant response instead of realizing that a real live person can provide so much more information than geneology records, pictures and locations of relatives. He imagines what a Father's day would be like if he actually got to spend it with his biofather. However, he has an opportunity to communicate, make a connection and possibly a relationship with his siblings and other paternal relatives but he cops out instead. It seemed like a codependent response and doesn't even give anyone else the opportunity to make a choice for themself. Furthermore he is concerned about his Mother's feelings and reputation but writes this book which reveals her "secret" to the world! He never even asks her if it was an ongoing relationship or affair or even if it was consensual! Sorry Mr. Griffeth, you are just at the tip of the iceberg imho of knowing where you came from and who you are! Do more than use your imagination! Take a leap of faith and find out what your paternal family is really all about! Furthermore, you mention how much you enjoy your relationship with your cousin, Doug, who was relinquished and reunited! You are NOT even giving anyone in your paternal family the opportunity to have this with you!

I started reading this wonderful memoir and had to put my life on hold until I reached the end. As an avid genealogist myself I love the way the various strands of the family story are woven together. I wept with empathy and laughed at the twists and turns. Highly recommended!

I could not put this book down. I felt the turmoil and pain, the love and compassion, and ultimately, the acceptance that while one truly never knows what curve balls life will casually toss your way.... that there are treasures to be found, if you choose to look. I was extremely moved by your journey, Bill. You've done your family...all of them...proud.

As a genealogist I found this book fascinating .Good for him to pursue the question. As a nurse I helped with the conception of many children through the use of donor sperm. I wonder how many of their parents fear that DNA will unveil their family secret if they made it so.Thanks to Ancestry an 87 year old cousin who recently found out her aunt was really her mother found me, and was able to fill in family history on the father she never knew..

Well written and engaging tale that was unnecessarily lengthened to fill the pages of a book. I was compelled to buy this book after reading a teaser article in the magazine "American Ancestors". Actually, the whole story could have been told in a few more pages in the same article and it would have probably been better. Although I am an avid genealogist I found myself skipping through the unrelated chapters on his Griffeth family history because I just wanted to get to the rest of the story. This book is NOT a waste of time. It is a riveting story, well told ... but in too many words over too many pages.Despite this... it is a very quick read and I would recommend it to anyone who is genealogically inclined.

It may be premature to review a book I've only read a fraction of (it's very long) but I was delighted to find Woolf's essays as well as her novels, and A Writer's Diary too. I am thrilled to have this rich collection. So far, I've read The Voyage Out, her first published novel, which I've never read, and selections from The Common Reader I, which I read a long time ago. I postpone re-reading my old favorites, but I know I'll get there. Woolf isn't to everyone's taste, but this is a bonanza if she is.

This was a great compilation of some of the world's greatest writings. One of the books I would take to a desert island. I'm using the Kindle version to accompany me reading the book in Italian so I can look up words I don't know in the English version as I go along.

Very informative for single source for photograph history and critique. I particularly like reading the book in Kindle software because it allows me to Google photographer images directly from the text.I would recommend this book to any aspiring photographer.

This book is a must have. It should be in every University library and on every individual's bookshelf. Why does a photographer want an education, formal or otherwise? Alone, there are so many quotable statements here and although there is some referencing, the view points from an eclectic group of experts are priceless.

This book has essays on photography by famous photographers in the mid-20th Century. An excellent read for anyone interested in the history of photography.

Esoteric... at best.

Solid and thorough writing

This book contains articles written by many photographers and critics. As a result there is a wide variety of quality.

Excellent collection of extracts and excerpts from established photographic practitioners, essayists, and educators, a great book for a beginner's photography course. Touches on a number of related issues including the image-making process, the role of photography in the arts and society, photography criticism, fundamentals of successful art practice, and the role and function of the educator, among others. Weaknesses of this collection include several frustratingly short extracts, the absence of images to support or exemplify the text, and the near total absence of opinion from anywhere outside the borders of the USA.

If a photographer might think that a picture is worth 10,000 words, why would one need a book of words about photography? Wouldn't a few well chosen photographs have obviated the need for this book? Probably not, because the aforesaid major premise is probably wrong, or at least overstated. There are some concepts that are so complex that they can't be expressed in pictures. That presumably was the thought of the editors.In his introduction Charles Traub, who is the chair of the School of Visual Arts' department devoted to photography, says that the world of photography has changed in recent years and that the writings included in the book are designed to prepare the fine arts student to enter into the world of contemporary photography. In order to do this the authors have divided the book into four parts: "Reflections on the Medium: What It Means to Photograph; How Others See Them: Considering the Photographer; Finding an Audience: Working with the Professionals; and Guide for the Uneducated: Higher Education and Photography. Each Section contains several short essays ranging from less than a half page to 11 pages. Although the editors disavow any idea of providing photographic instruction, the piece by Henri Cartier-Bresson comes the closest to instruction. On the other hand, the piece by Dave Eggers, in which he describes the thoughts running through the mind of a young women waiting to take a gritty but artistic photograph might be interesting to a creative writing student, and while a bit of fun, does not seem to be useful to a photographer. The interview with Charlotte Cotton, a museum photography curator, seemed the most accurate and insightful description of the current photographic art market. For me the most useful piece was an outline of how to critique a photograph by Ralph Hattersley.The Amazon star system is not useful in the evaluation of a book like this. The readings in this book are a mixed bag. I suspect that most photographers, including those earning a living from their work, will find little to benefit them here, although they may find some of the articles of interest. On the other hand, for the individual earning a Master of Fine Arts in Photography, and interested in entering into the contemporary art photography market, the essays may prove useful.If they have not done so already, those who want to read more about photography, with an emphasis on its history as well as its philosophy might do better to read an old classic, "Photography in Print: Writings from 1816 to the Present" by Vicki Goldberg.

Guide worked fine, gave good info on the major sites and took us to several "lesser" sites that turned out to be deeply enjoyable (Royal Tapestry Factory and Berlin Park, to name a couple). Pretty good info, but skimps a little on things like how & where to get a car to get out of town, and more detail on neighboring sites. For that, we used the Rick Steves mini-Madrid guide, which requires more reading/pondering but gives great insights into how to get around and also appreciate where you're at. The two together worked beautifully to make for a great trip.

This DK Top 10 Guide on Madrid is well done and will serve you nicely if you are planning a trip to Madrid. I used it for a short 4-night stay and between the restaurant and bar recommendations, the local sights, and other hints it was more than enough. I also like that these guides contain detailed maps and all of it fits nicely in your jacket or back pocket. I buy these for all my trips abroad where I'll have some time for sightseeing.

Book didn't include the crucial most current info that taxis from Barajas Airport to all of Central Madrid are 30 Euros fixed, so... who knows what else was missing? Returned.

I was engrossed in this book from the very start. There is little introduction character building. Instead, we get right into the action with the unfolding of the story itself acting as the characterizations. The story itself is exciting and tense. The author isn’t afraid of some losses as well. I also found a good deal plausible there with one generalized exception.There’s one character that’s the focus of the book. When the survivor group breaks into separate parties, we only get to follow this character’s actions. Likewise, we only get to read about his interactions with others in the party rather than what turns out to be NPC’s interacting with each other.My final complaint is simply that the hero is too heroic for me to have suspended belief. He’s also bizarrely lucky. I can’t list the reasons without major spoilers so I’ll leave it at that.In sum, this is an exciting, tense, light read with easy to root for protagonists with the jungle itself standing in for a real bad guy and it’s a serious foe to this bunch of unprepared teens. I’d prefer it done as an adult novel so to include subtleties inappropriate here as well as some adult themes. I’ve been dreaming of a re-make of The Admirable Crichton and if this were an adult book, it could have been that since it brushes along that theme persistently. However, it never tackles it head-on.Definitely a worthwhile read for both YA and A.

This novel's story is on two levels. One level is the simple prima facie survival story. At another level, is an allegorical story of the world's current sociopathic leadership. From my perspective both stories are synchronous and the symbolism is as in-your-face as the sociopathic corporate media's propaganda coverage.First off, the author does something very clever in his prologue, epilogue and at the conclusion of his acknowledgements. It's the first time I've run across it; and it is amusingly & pleasantly artistic.The prologue sets the stage of chaos; whose hand is at play throughout the novel. The author's epilogue, ingeniously wraps up an obviously loose end in a artistic chaotic completed package. Then in the acknowledgement, he lets loose this tightly wrapped package, right into the reader's hands.The novel starts off with thirty-nine students, three teachers, and one teacher's wife on their way to Costa Rica on a two week environmental high school field trip. After the reader gets to know some of the students and teachers the action speeds up with the plane doing a nose dive into the jungle. Not all survive, but those that do now face an environment that rarely gives second chances.The story centers around Tom Calloway, an outsider who really didn't want to go on the trip but got roped into it. Soon the allegory takes shape as Joel Aspinall, a student rep on the school council, son of some local politician, assumes leadership. Tom, and others soon realize that he's making decisions that are not in the best interests of everyone. The structure of decision making and the auto-pilot submissiveness of the majority of students are at odds with Tom and a few others who have different views on how to manage their survival.The story is set for a young adult audience; but it's themes are more along a Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm backdrop. There's plenty of action twists, turns, surprises and survival tactics. Readers who have watched survival shows will have their share of: been there, there done that moments.I like the message being hammered into young adult minds, to continuously question their leaders actions and policies. That's why I bumped up the rating on this. That message is for everyone one of us.Continuously question authority; or, live to regret it.

This is in the "teen" fiction section of Amazon but I think it is more for middle school age teens than high school or Young Adult. The characters are all in high school but it doesn't feel edgy or realistic enough for older teens. There is no swearing and no sex and the violence/death is fairly tame and not described in grisly or graphic detail. Even the plane crash is not very scary. So parents of younger teens (and even tweens) should feel comfortable with it.Tom is the third party narrator of this adventure story. He is an outsider at school and it is unclear whether that is because he naturally is an introvert or because his parents died several years earlier and he is being raised by someone who isn't very parental. The story opens as Tom and a large group of his classmates are flying down to Costa Rica for an eco-educational trip. The plane crashes with only the teens as survivors and the story takes off.On one level, this is a straight forward survival adventure. But there is a second story about how being in a lief or death situation can change people. Now this is no Lord of the Rings. It is much tamer than that. But you have kids who want to lead but make bad decisions and you have kids whose knowledge isn't put to use by those who appointed themselves as leaders. And you have Tom the outsider in the middle of them all.I thought it was an entertaining read and think both boys and girls will enjoy the adventure.
