Recently I was reminded of the birthday (October 14th) of one of my personal/professional influencers John Wooden. It caused me to pause and reflect on him, his life, and the legacy he left behind through his teachings. For those of you asking, “who is John Wooden”, here is a brief bio.John Robert Wooden (October 14, 1910 – June 4, 2010) also known as the "Wizard of Westwood," was the men’s basketball coach during UCLA’s dynasty years. Over his career he won ten NCAA national championships in a 12-year period, including a record seven in a row, and his team won a record 88 consecutive games. In 1960 he was the first to be enshrined as both a player and a coach in the Basketball Hall of Fame. ESPN named Coach Wooden the Coach of the Century.But at his core, Coach Wooden was a teacher. The life lessons he taught and his quotes, known as "Woodenisms", have become legend. Fortunately, he shared his philosophy, credo, witticisms, and his pyramid for success with us all and with generations to come through lectures and books.I was introduced to Coach Wooden’s teachings years ago and then reintroduced to them again when a manager of mine gave me a copy of the book, “Wooden, A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court”. I devoured it and once again I was hooked. In it, he lays out his philosophy on life, leadership, success, and personal fulfillment. He teaches through short simple inspirational messages that strike you as both common sense and deeply profound at the same time.So I pulled out my copy of “Observations and Reflections” full of post-it’s marking key pages and re-read it. My objective being to honor him, but as usual I ended up once again learning from him.Coach Wooden credits his father (as I do mine) with giving him the foundation for his life. In “Observations and Reflections” he refers to the two sets of threes – direct and simple rules from his father about how you should live your life that his father gave to him on a card.Set 1:• Never lie.• Never cheat.• Never steal.Set 2:• Don’t whine.• Don’t complain.• Don’t make excuses.On the back of the card was his father’s creed, titled “Seven Things to Do”. I’ll let you do some research or read the book to learn them.I am always struck by how similar his basic life lessons are to those I learned from my own father.My father a man of few words (or who as my oldest son referred to in the eulogy he gave at his funeral - “a man of few words who somehow could give a one-sentence answer to any question about life no matter how complex”) had his own “rules” or as my children came to know them as “Poppa-isms”. He had many of them, some serious and some funny – but in each one there was a lesson.Like Coach Wooden my father seemed to have an innate understanding of life that he could express in the simplest of terms. My Father passed away this past year, so I guess when I was reminded of Coach Wooden’s birthday I somehow subconsciously connected the two men in my mind.Over the years I have gifted Coach Wooden’s “Observations and Reflections” book to friends, to young people graduating from High School and College, and to managers that I have coached (using it as a developmental tool) in my career - - and yes, it was required reading for all three of my children.Take a moment to acquaint yourself with Coach Wooden and allow the teacher to teach. You might be surprised how familiar some of it sounds. In today’s complex world where at times overthinking things tends to happen, sometimes simplicity is the best medicine. If you’ve been present in the twenty-first century you know days have vanished for when coaches were respected as much for their off-court performances as for their success on the court. One of my very favorite parts of this book is the quote, “Always try to be the very best you can be. Learn from others, yes. But don’t try to be better than they are”(Wooden 92). My gymnastics coach uses this idea from the quote a lot during practice. He tells us not to compare ourselves to others but to focus on our success. When you waste all your energy trying to become someone else, you won’t become what you could be. This is what Wooden expressed in the quote, and it struck out to me because of how raw and true it was. If your into books that help create a new sense of confidence or books that can help get you out of something tough, this book is for you! Wooden’s book, A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections on and off the Court, plays more into mental survival rather than physical. He expresses the lessons he’s learned while coaching, and raising a family. He takes what anybody could be struggling with and shares how he handled it and what he learned from it from his personal experience. It has helped others to get through there rough patches. Wooden’s book is full of different lessons he has learned, but in a style where each excerpt is only 3-4 pages long. So if you’re like me, and don’t like to read long passages, this book is for you! Wooden was a very influential person, and that was shown very clearly in this book! So if you are struggling with anything, he may just be your solution.

This did not meet our needs. It seemed to be written more for people visiting the Saint John area. We we're pretty disappointedthe book did not really cover all of Newfoundland. The visitors guide that is free from the province was much more useful.

Great up to date info. Maps have little detail. Cannot follow in different areas due to lack of routes or locations.

Small and nice and concise with lots of goodies inside

Frustratingly, there are few guides just to NL. Unfortunately, this one doesn't do the job. Much of the background info is just cut and paste from their Atlantic Canada guide and not Newfoundland specific. Somehow, they manage to make NL sound not so great to visit--and we had a terrific time going around the province. We didn't find it helpful planning or during our trip. Go with Fodor's or LP instead (latter I think excludes NL from title even though it's in the book).

Although the book does create and environment abundant of useful knowledge pertaining to relevance problems within the search domain, it falls short in the majority of chapters by focusing too much on the organizational benefits of focusing on search relevance rather than on the applied problems that it tries to solve. I feel like the book would have been a better read had it been condensed to a thoughtfully organized 5 chapters instead of the broad stroked attempt at encompassing all things related to relevance. A majority of the readers will choose this book in order to unlock the potential that Elasticsearch and Solr have for modeling relevance within a search application. To that endeavor, this book excels in many ways. Its description of signals within documents and the emphasis on correct tokenization and analysis before indexing are great lingo and concepts to have when taking on the role of a search engineer. The examples and explanations are great and the authors do a good job of highlighting the importance of debugging relevance problems with the features available in the technologies used. As far as the concepts presented regarding how to build queries that run against an index engineered with relevance in mind I was enthralled by the content presented. And although the book was at times verbose and riddled with fluff pieces meant to sound joking and entertaining, they were mostly passable and one could still enjoy the thoughtfulness of the examples and code presented. However, at the end of the book, the content became increasingly unrelated and unfocused. The last 3 chapters could all be condensed into one "putting it all together" chapter. Not only that but the mention of the iterative cycle of relevance and collaborative filtering feel completely out of place within the intended goal of the book. The mentions of machine learning are appropriate but feel incredibly "hand-wavy" and some of the writing feels like it lacks depth. The organization of the book could have benefited from a larger and deeper focus on "term-centric" vs "field-centric" queries and the features available in the search engine to support those types of searches. Although the book is a decent introduction to the field I feel like it loses its focus at times and the end of it is a total miscalculation on it's target audience.

I expected more technical depth in how to build complex queries and understand what Lucene is doing with those queries "under the hood". This book barely touched on that, only briefly discussing indices, distributed computing and doc values, and not going into say how queries are compiled (are they even compiled? I don't know after reading this book). I also expected some discussion on how to combine several different types of rankings. I didn't really get that either, since the authors kind of stop after discussing how to combine 2 or 3 factors in simplistic ways. If you need to use lots of advanced function scores, scripted scores, and nested document types, this probably won't be more helpful than stack overflow. As a basic primer, it is a bit better than the elasticsearch intro book, though that is free online.

Very informative book about Search Technology !

I found this book on the MEAP program (Manning Early Access Program) and avidly read it as the chapters were released. It was, for me, an incredibly timely and valuable book because I had just landed a job building SOLR search for the local branch of a large multinational corporation. Although I had SOLR experience in my previous position, it was unique in that the whole idea of "relevance" didn't really apply - but it applied in spades in my new gig.Relevant Search (the book) was the next step in my education about what search is "really" about - finding the relevant "things" the user really wants to see. NOT about matching certain words. The book made a huge, positive difference in the results I was able to produce for my new employer and if you're going to be playing around in the "Search" space, you owe it to yourself to get this book. Reading it and using the suggestions and approaches in the book made a huge difference in how I approached the work, as well as providing incredibly useful "patterns" for discussing the whole problem of Search and Relevancy with my Product Manager, my SME's and upper management. I received a number of compliments for my knowledge - much of which I owed to reading this book.This book is not about the nuts and bolts of installing and running SOLR or ElasticSearch -- it IS about the important concepts (and some useful tricks and traps) for building Relevancy into your search tools. You will learn how to build better searches (and there are some included examples of actual query syntax).Think of it this way:Search is really not what you are after in a search application. Relevancy IS what you want. Relevancy is about getting the search to produce results that thrill your users - because it appears to match their needs and expectations. It is easy to match every instance of the word "maverick"... What users want is an application that "knows" the difference between "Maverick" the car, "maverick" the wild stallion, and "Maverick" the iconoclastic, anti-establishment hero of that famous early 60's TV show.. THAT is relevance.If that matters to you, buy this book.

Robert Moss is a highly gifted story teller, very educated, just a joy to read. Learning so much! Highly recommended! I'm also reading Only Three Things, Secret History of Dreamers, and just got Dreaming True, which I have not read. IF you are interested in the power of dreams, while asleep and awake, highly recommended!

FYI- "Conscious" dreaming is lucid dreaming. I didn't realize that until well into the book. It approaches lucid dreaming in a down to earth, practical way that makes is accessible to anyone. Moss selects his words carefully, so he ends up saying a lot with one sentence (vs. those who have a lot of words and say nothing). It's easy reading, but it's dense. I am having to take my time to absorb it all. It's well worth it though. It's really got a lot of great, easy to implement ideas that will help you to make the most of your dream life. After reading this, dreams will become your friend and guide to your inner experience.If you don't want to think and go slow, this is probably not the book for you. It IS heady, but it doesn't feel intellectual at all. Anyone can access this, but it will require you to slow down, think, and apply what you read if you want it to be meaningful.

During the past several years, frequent, recurring nightmares have disturbed my sleeping dreams. A co-worker and healer suggested that dreams recur because they are trying to get a message through and that I might enjoy reading CONSCIOUS DREAMING.Enjoy is not the descriptor I would use for how I interacted with this book. Words more like absorb or consume might be better. I was mesmerized.The writer, Australian born American Shaman, Robert Moss is a dreamer, workshop leader, and author. His voice is authentic and speaks from personal experience and vicarious experience sharing his own dream worlds and those of others.He gives practical and impractical, but workable advise about how to be present to the dreamworlds while waking, sleeping, or journeying, giving examples of how one might hear or see the message being sent. Among these possibilities are incubating a dream (asking for an answer to a specific question to come to you in the dream state before going to sleep) and a special way he shares for recording the dream story upon awakening and processing the dream.The writer also gives many examples of dream stories told in dream-groups or workshops and how the dreams came to be understood by the dreamer.His most important point: you are the master interpreter of your own dreams.For me, this book and one particular other, (JOURNEY OF SOULS, Michael Newton) informed my own dreamworld study over a two-and-one-half year period following the deaths of my parents in 2009, especially focused on the nightmares I mentioned.I am profoundly changed for the better, and further am currently working to finish a full-length manuscript of poetry born out of that study, messages from the ether I continue to process and integrate into my world view and understanding.I own this book. I will keep and revisit this book. I highly recommend it to you, the dreamer seeking consciousness and connection with the dreamworlds.

I chose this book because we are trying to win custody of our two precious grandchildren. I felt like we needed advice on this very important subject. This book has answered many of my questions. I feel much more confident in the outcome of our case. If you are wanting custody of your children or grandchildren, then I suggest you buy this book.

This is a very quick read. It gives you information that you need to have about what a guardian ad litem does and how you should interact with one. I found the information to be useful.

I am a GAL and if you were going to use a GAL this book would explain perfectly what you need to do to work wellwith the GAL. I plan to purchase this book for all my clients going through divorce and trying to find an equitablechild custody agreement.

Very helpful to understanding what the GAL does and wants from me and my child. I think it gets straight to the point.

This was easy to read and had good advice. I would like to note that the GAL programs vary by state such that in some states the guardian is a lawyer but on other states the guardian is a trained volunteer from the community. This is a distinction that I think should be known. Volunteers don't get paid whereas some of the lawyers that do GAL work do.

Great information and help to knowing how you can be prepared. A good book to read or even scroll through

Simple terminology and recommendations that can be found in many Blogs online. The "attorney" in the recommendation to buy this "brochure" is a marketing tool.

Please, for the love of god, buy this book instead of fighting your child custody case with legal information gleaned from sources found on the internet. This book was written by an attorney, with experience and an actual education, unlike Google, Esq.
