I've learned more from this book than from other books that are 5 times as thick. I've been secretly watching videos on YouTube of 3dEx doing his speed modeling. Up until reading his book, many of the techniques he's using have been a mystery to me. How did he do that??!! Now, I feel a little more in the know. The book is very short and does not go into a lot of detail, but for me it was just enough. He goes through the most used modeling tools and what you'll use them for. From there it's up to you to use your creative powers to make stuff. I only hope he makes another book covering Substance Painter basics.

As I have grown older into my senior years I have developed more of an open mind to reading about unusual and even strange topics. As a scientific minded person for most of my life I disregarded mystical and pseudoscience subjects; however, I did find this 268 page hardcover book (The Field: The quest for the secret force of the universe by Lynne McTaggart) very interesting and well researched. I purchased this volume at a bargain price on Amazon. This book covers the results of various experiments in Quantum Physics, both early research and contemporary research studies. This book is organized in three parts with 12 detailed chapters covering the following subjects: The prologue gives us a look at “the coming revolution.” Part one (The resonating universe) covers light in the darkness, the sea of light, beings of light, the language of the cell and the resonating with the world. Part two (The extended Mind) explains the creative observer, sharing dreams, the extended eye and the endless here and now. Part three (Tapping into the field) covers the healing field, telegram from Gaia and the zero point age. This book is thought provoking and explores the relationship between all of us and the universal energy fields. Some scientists believe that in the future science will look like magic. It seems some of the spooky things discovered through research in quantum physics are becoming more interesting every day.Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Seated Zen Karate for seniors and the physically challenged).

Some have called it the Causal plane, the Monadic plane, Adi, or Buddhic Plane, but Lynne discusses it as "The Field", from the quantum physicists Zero Point Field. The tag line "The Quest for The Secret Force of the Universe" says it all.Read it with a sense of journey and wonderful possibilities.Lynne covers such topics as The Zero Point Field, Coherence, Psychokinesis, and the connections between Consciousness and Healing, and Intention. The Field discusses and connects research from such scientists as James Clerk Maxwell, Fritz-Albert Popp, Michael Faraday, Jacques Benveniste, Max Planck, Karl Pribram, David Bohm, Russel Targ, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, and Rupert Sheldrake. With 35 pages of cited research and interview footnotes, a reader will appreciate the rock solid homework she's done on this quest, so WE don't have to.Here's a few thoughts from The Field that really poked the fires in my own brain.•By tapping into the Field, Consciousness has been shown to affect plant growth, bacteria growth, rodent behavior, cats and dogs, enzyme activity, crime rates and even Healing in strangers.•Could this Zero Point Energy Field explain why "when closely packed together, atoms and molecules exhibit a collective behavior, forming what scientists have termed 'coherent domains'." This collective behavior can also be seen in crowd mentalities, or the beauty of schools of fish or flocks of birds as they instantly all change direction as one entity.•Seeds, or the water used for those plants, when held (or thought about) by depressed people repeatedly showed suppressed growth. Contrary, holding or thinking of the seeds or water in a positive manner - showed a statistical difference in growth.•As quantum physicists continue to study the "Zero Point Field", even for sources of fuel, we are beginning to connect the sciences in the HOW of "Universal Connectedness".•Molecules can respond to the vibration of another molecule in the same way AS IF it had actually touched the original molecule. Yes, biological chain reactions were initiated when just the Frequency was relayed. "Cells don't rely on the happenstance of collision but on electromagnetic signaling at low frequency electronic waves." (This explains how on average, some 100,000 chemical reactions per second in each cell in your body, could happen, rather than "blindly bumping into each other" like little solid billiard balls.)Rarely does a book inspire such thought as this one. It's a definite Must Read, and was an enjoyable and equally as inspiring Re-Read years later for me. Most importantly it has Inspired my own imagination, a reaching for my own understanding of MY experience. That's all any author could ever really hope for, I'd think. As most people know, new ideas can always seem heretical. Mostly due to the Momentum of the old thoughts and politics and feelings of insecurity. The Field helps orchestrate a new momentum. Congratulations Lynne!

I had read this book once, quite a few years ago, and just like that time, it changed my view of the life process. While my views of how life seems to work have been evolving, Lynne McTaggart's descriptions of the scientific process, her discoveries, and her thoughts on their meaning prompted me to revisit some of my own. I loved her descriptions of the interactions between scientists, and how they met wish such resistance from those in the mainstream of the scientific community.I would highly recommend this book to anyone beginning to look into field medicine, energy work, or wanting to see how science really works.

I wish more books were as progressive and ahead of their time as this one. The author correctly points out that most scientists are "subtracting God out of their equations"; for almost the entire book I thought she was doing the same thing, until the very end where she revealed that she was not doing that. Interestingly enough I think my favorite parts were the end, but also the preface. I like how she rightfully questions Darwinism and Newtonian physics. This book has a lot of useful information on Consciousness research. She also said that it seems clear that consciousness resides in our entire bodies; I think that was proven decades ago in fact. How else can a bacteria be alive, when all it is is a jelly bean with an RNA strand inside(no brain). Lots of organisms do not have brains but they are fully alive and have their own free will.I also really liked when she was talking about how this Zero Point Field could be used, in the future, for an endless energy source and for space travel. And I agree that everything that happens in our Universe is recorded in The Field as information.I think this book would benefit everyone, and I hope I can live to see the day when the notion that we live in a random, meaningless Universe dies a very hard and permanent death.

I've only read Ch 12 - Designing Web Applications and Servlet Patterns, via PDF online at the authors site. It's worth the price alone - I went to my local bookstore to purchase it last night - but alast the isles are full of MS C# and .NET books. However on to what I learned from Ch 12 - the patterns that are put into action are wonderful! I've used MVC in the past - but adding the 'Command & Controller' to MVC is a real boon! I've not been successful with pattern books in the past, because they typically do not provide code examples, which I find a great learning tool [ I'm a "visual" learner ]. This book includes great code examples, the graphics are very professional, and helpful also.4 of 5 stars - I've not read the whole book - I've got to reserve total commitment til then.

Another great book from Wrox's Professional Series.A more concise (700 pages) book than other in the 'Professional' range that I feel benefits froma great choice of chapters that not only provides you with the basics of Java Servlets but also those topics often skipped over elsewhere.Covering the new Servlet 2.3 API, deployment issues, filtering, scaleability techniques etc, this book provides a comprehensive insight to the use of Servlet Technology and best practices in the real world.Aimed at the profesional Java developer this book is an excellent resource for anyone currently working with Servlets/JSP/Webapps or any one wishing to learn Java Servlet Technology.I worked as a Technical Reviewer on this book and can personally vouch for the excellent array of chapters each packed with easily adaptible, real world examples.

Hiya All,I have this book for sometime now, and I think, you can't have a better book to learn Servlets 2.3 API. Specially, the Chap on MVC pattern was very good. I liked the way the book has been written. There are lots of practicle examples in the book. The Patterns have been explained in a very good manner. But my favourite is Chap 8. Its downright interesting that how you can combine a database with a JSP page to create a Web Apps. I had some problems in Running the code and had to take the help of Wrox People, But I managed it with there help. Overall, a dependable book.

This is a very good book.It is a must have for any serious web-application devloper. It explains well all the subjects you need to know about servlet programming.Buying this book saves you lot of learning-by-step time.I really suggest this title. Finally one book that i'm glad to pay. This is my forst wrox book but, if all worx books are like this one, for sure not the last.

Amazon.com Review

Coach Wooden's remarkable 10 national basketball championships in 12 years at UCLA speak for themselves. In Wooden, the coach--quiet, thoughtful, and introspective throughout his distinguished career--finally speaks forhimself, and he's well worth hearing. Wooden is a modern chapbook of inspiration and good sense that reveals the hard-court philosopher behind it as a man of character, conviction, decency, and straightforwardness. There are no complex ideas, just little beams of light filtered through anecdotes that project the kinds of simple, immutable truths that in the end touch nothing but net.

From Library Journal

As stated in the introduction, this book is "neither a conventional narrative, a biography, nor a how-to book on basketball." It is instead a compilation of the tenets and teachings of arguably the greatest basketball coach of all time. Wooden's codes are of the traditional kind, centering on family, faith, friends off the court and organization, dedication, and preparation on the hardwood. Still, he is not stuck in the past. His observation that basketball is first and foremost a game of quickness revolutionized the tactical approach to the sport. The former UCLA coach is above all a teacher, and the lessons he imparts here are derived from a lifetime of learning and achievement. Recommended for adult and young adult collections.?William H. Recently I was reminded of the birthday (October 14th) of one of my personal/professional influencers John Wooden. It caused me to pause and reflect on him, his life, and the legacy he left behind through his teachings. For those of you asking, “who is John Wooden”, here is a brief bio.John Robert Wooden (October 14, 1910 – June 4, 2010) also known as the "Wizard of Westwood," was the men’s basketball coach during UCLA’s dynasty years. Over his career he won ten NCAA national championships in a 12-year period, including a record seven in a row, and his team won a record 88 consecutive games. In 1960 he was the first to be enshrined as both a player and a coach in the Basketball Hall of Fame. ESPN named Coach Wooden the Coach of the Century. But at his core, Coach Wooden was a teacher. The life lessons he taught and his quotes, known as "Woodenisms", have become legend. Fortunately, he shared his philosophy, credo, witticisms, and his pyramid for success with us all and with generations to come through lectures and books.I was introduced to Coach Wooden’s teachings years ago and then reintroduced to them again when a manager of mine gave me a copy of the book, “Wooden, A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court”. I devoured it and once again I was hooked. In it, he lays out his philosophy on life, leadership, success, and personal fulfillment. He teaches through short simple inspirational messages that strike you as both common sense and deeply profound at the same time.So I pulled out my copy of “Observations and Reflections” full of post-it’s marking key pages and re-read it. My objective being to honor him, but as usual I ended up once again learning from him.Coach Wooden credits his father (as I do mine) with giving him the foundation for his life. In “Observations and Reflections” he refers to the two sets of threes – direct and simple rules from his father about how you should live your life that his father gave to him on a card.Set 1:• Never lie.• Never cheat.• Never steal.Set 2:• Don’t whine.• Don’t complain.• Don’t make excuses. On the back of the card was his father’s creed, titled “Seven Things to Do”. I’ll let you do some research or read the book to learn them.I am always struck by how similar his basic life lessons are to those I learned from my own father. My father a man of few words (or who as my oldest son referred to in the eulogy he gave at his funeral - “a man of few words who somehow could give a one-sentence answer to any question about life no matter how complex”) had his own “rules” or as my children came to know them as “Poppa-isms”. He had many of them, some serious and some funny – but in each one there was a lesson.Like Coach Wooden my father seemed to have an innate understanding of life that he could express in the simplest of terms. My Father passed away this past year, so I guess when I was reminded of Coach Wooden’s birthday I somehow subconsciously connected the two men in my mind.Over the years I have gifted Coach Wooden’s “Observations and Reflections” book to friends, to young people graduating from High School and College, and to managers that I have coached (using it as a developmental tool) in my career - - and yes, it was required reading for all three of my children.Take a moment to acquaint yourself with Coach Wooden and allow the teacher to teach. You might be surprised how familiar some of it sounds. In today’s complex world where at times overthinking things tends to happen, sometimes simplicity is the best medicine. Happy Belated Birthday Coach, and thanks Dad.

If you’ve been present in the twenty-first century you know days have vanished for when coaches were respected as much for their off-court performances as for their success on the court. However, in, A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections on and off the Court brings to light the timeless wisdom of the extraordinary UCLA basketball coach, John Wooden. In honest and telling passages, Coach brings to light his Reflections and Observations about virtually every aspect of his life. Wooden shares his personal philosophy on family, achievement, success, and excellence. Raised on a small farm in Halls, Indiana, he offers the lessons and wisdom he’s learned over the course of his journey through life, being a coach for UCLA, and what he’s as a husband, and being the father of two kids. These lessons, along with personal letters from Denny Crum, and Kareem Abdul-Jabber, have made Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections on and off the Court, a book for the ages. One of my very favorite parts of this book is the quote, “Always try to be the very best you can be. Learn from others, yes. But don’t try to be better than they are”(Wooden 92). My gymnastics coach uses this idea from the quote a lot during practice. He tells us not to compare ourselves to others but to focus on our success. When you waste all your energy trying to become someone else, you won’t become what you could be. This is what Wooden expressed in the quote, and it struck out to me because of how raw and true it was. If your into books that help create a new sense of confidence or books that can help get you out of something tough, this book is for you! Wooden’s book, A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections on and off the Court, plays more into mental survival rather than physical. He expresses the lessons he’s learned while coaching, and raising a family. He takes what anybody could be struggling with and shares how he handled it and what he learned from it from his personal experience. It has helped others to get through there rough patches. Wooden’s book is full of different lessons he has learned, but in a style where each excerpt is only 3-4 pages long. So if you’re like me, and don’t like to read long passages, this book is for you! Wooden was a very influential person, and that was shown very clearly in this book! So if you are struggling with anything, he may just be your solution.

"Happiness is in many things. It's in love. It's in sharing. But most of all, it's in being at peace with yourself knowing that you are making the effort, the full effort, to do what is right.""Did I win? Did I lose? Those are the wrong questions. The correct question is: Did I make my best effort? That's what matters. The rest of it just gets in the way.""In classic times, the courageous struggle for a noble cause was considered success in itself. Sadly, that ideal has been forgotten. But it is well worth remembering."~ John Wooden from WoodenJohn Wooden's awesome.According to ESPN, he's the greatest coach of the 20th century and some would say he's the greatest coach *ever.* A super humble, inspired man, Wooden led his UCLA basketball team (Go Bruins!! :) to 10 NCAA championships in 12 years, including an 88-game winning streak. As a coach, he was all about the *process* of becoming a better and better player (and human being) rather than an obsessive focus on the *outcome* of winning. As an author he shares this grounded, super practical old-school wisdom in a wonderful way. Here are some of my favorite Big Ideas:1. Become A Little Better - Every day.2. This did not meet our needs. It seemed to be written more for people visiting the Saint John area. We we're pretty disappointedthe book did not really cover all of Newfoundland. The visitors guide that is free from the province was much more useful.

Great up to date info. Maps have little detail. Cannot follow in different areas due to lack of routes or locations.

Small and nice and concise with lots of goodies inside

Frustratingly, there are few guides just to NL. Unfortunately, this one doesn't do the job. Much of the background info is just cut and paste from their Atlantic Canada guide and not Newfoundland specific. Somehow, they manage to make NL sound not so great to visit--and we had a terrific time going around the province. We didn't find it helpful planning or during our trip. Go with Fodor's or LP instead (latter I think excludes NL from title even though it's in the book).

Although the book does create and environment abundant of useful knowledge pertaining to relevance problems within the search domain, it falls short in the majority of chapters by focusing too much on the organizational benefits of focusing on search relevance rather than on the applied problems that it tries to solve. I feel like the book would have been a better read had it been condensed to a thoughtfully organized 5 chapters instead of the broad stroked attempt at encompassing all things related to relevance. A majority of the readers will choose this book in order to unlock the potential that Elasticsearch and Solr have for modeling relevance within a search application. To that endeavor, this book excels in many ways. Its description of signals within documents and the emphasis on correct tokenization and analysis before indexing are great lingo and concepts to have when taking on the role of a search engineer. The examples and explanations are great and the authors do a good job of highlighting the importance of debugging relevance problems with the features available in the technologies used. As far as the concepts presented regarding how to build queries that run against an index engineered with relevance in mind I was enthralled by the content presented. And although the book was at times verbose and riddled with fluff pieces meant to sound joking and entertaining, they were mostly passable and one could still enjoy the thoughtfulness of the examples and code presented. However, at the end of the book, the content became increasingly unrelated and unfocused. The last 3 chapters could all be condensed into one "putting it all together" chapter. Not only that but the mention of the iterative cycle of relevance and collaborative filtering feel completely out of place within the intended goal of the book. The mentions of machine learning are appropriate but feel incredibly "hand-wavy" and some of the writing feels like it lacks depth. The organization of the book could have benefited from a larger and deeper focus on "term-centric" vs "field-centric" queries and the features available in the search engine to support those types of searches. Although the book is a decent introduction to the field I feel like it loses its focus at times and the end of it is a total miscalculation on it's target audience.

I expected more technical depth in how to build complex queries and understand what Lucene is doing with those queries "under the hood". This book barely touched on that, only briefly discussing indices, distributed computing and doc values, and not going into say how queries are compiled (are they even compiled? I don't know after reading this book). I also expected some discussion on how to combine several different types of rankings. I didn't really get that either, since the authors kind of stop after discussing how to combine 2 or 3 factors in simplistic ways. If you need to use lots of advanced function scores, scripted scores, and nested document types, this probably won't be more helpful than stack overflow. As a basic primer, it is a bit better than the elasticsearch intro book, though that is free online.

Really well written

Great book

An excellent book which weaves the process of building a great search application with the tools available to do so.

Very informative book about Search Technology !

I found this book on the MEAP program (Manning Early Access Program) and avidly read it as the chapters were released. It was, for me, an incredibly timely and valuable book because I had just landed a job building SOLR search for the local branch of a large multinational corporation. Although I had SOLR experience in my previous position, it was unique in that the whole idea of "relevance" didn't really apply - but it applied in spades in my new gig.Relevant Search (the book) was the next step in my education about what search is "really" about - finding the relevant "things" the user really wants to see. NOT about matching certain words. The book made a huge, positive difference in the results I was able to produce for my new employer and if you're going to be playing around in the "Search" space, you owe it to yourself to get this book. Reading it and using the suggestions and approaches in the book made a huge difference in how I approached the work, as well as providing incredibly useful "patterns" for discussing the whole problem of Search and Relevancy with my Product Manager, my SME's and upper management. I received a number of compliments for my knowledge - much of which I owed to reading this book. This book is not about the nuts and bolts of installing and running SOLR or ElasticSearch -- it IS about the important concepts (and some useful tricks and traps) for building Relevancy into your search tools. You will learn how to build better searches (and there are some included examples of actual query syntax).Think of it this way:Search is really not what you are after in a search application. Relevancy IS what you want. Relevancy is about getting the search to produce results that thrill your users - because it appears to match their needs and expectations. It is easy to match every instance of the word "maverick"... What users want is an application that "knows" the difference between "Maverick" the car, "maverick" the wild stallion, and "Maverick" the iconoclastic, anti-establishment hero of that famous early 60's TV show.. THAT is relevance. If that matters to you, buy this book.

Conscious Dreaming: A Spiritual Path for Everyday Life, by Robert Moss

From Booklist

This is more and better than just a book about how to remember and understand dreams, although it is that kind of book and as good as any such recently published. Moss covers all the expected terrain, from how to train the mind to recall its nightly narratives, through how to unravel meaning from them, to how to start and sustain a dream group. But his book excels because he extends its purview to include shamanic dreaming, dreams of dead loved ones, healing dreams, angels, and spirit guides. Moss explores these more esoteric matters with great skill. Taking his cue from ancient and tribal traditions that see in dreams more than a set of symbols connected to individual psychology, Moss offers evidence that in dreams we connect with the transpersonal. Thus, an angel in a dream could be the dreamer's better self--or a real angel, come to help the dreamer through life's challenges. Moss' unusual approach to a perpetually intriguing subject is likely to appeal to a wide spectrum of readers. Patricia Monaghan

From the Back Cover

In Conscious Dreaming, Robert Moss details a unique, nine-step approach to understanding dreams, using contemporary dreamwork techniques developed from shamanic cultures around the world. Conscious Dreaming shows you how to use your dreams to understand your past, shape your future, get in touch with your deepest desires, and be guided by your higher self. Moss explains how to apply shamanic dreamwork techniques, most notably from Australian Aboriginal and Native American traditions, to the challenges of modern life and embark on dream journeys. Moss's methods are easy, effective, and entertaining, animated by his skillful retelling of his own dreams and those of his students - and the dreams' often dramatic insights and outcomes. According to Moss, some shamans believe that nothing occurs in ordinary reality unless it has been dreamed first. In the dreamscape, we not only glimpse future events, we can also develop our ability to choose more carefully between possible futures. Conscious Dreaming's innovative system of dream-catching and transpersonal interpretation, of dream re-entry and keeping a dream journal enables the reader to tap the deepest sources of creativity and intuition and make better choices in the critical passages of life.

Robert Moss is a highly gifted story teller, very educated, just a joy to read. Learning so much! Highly recommended! I'm also reading Only Three Things, Secret History of Dreamers, and just got Dreaming True, which I have not read. IF you are interested in the power of dreams, while asleep and awake, highly recommended!

FYI- "Conscious" dreaming is lucid dreaming. I didn't realize that until well into the book. It approaches lucid dreaming in a down to earth, practical way that makes is accessible to anyone. Moss selects his words carefully, so he ends up saying a lot with one sentence (vs. those who have a lot of words and say nothing). It's easy reading, but it's dense. I am having to take my time to absorb it all. It's well worth it though. It's really got a lot of great, easy to implement ideas that will help you to make the most of your dream life. After reading this, dreams will become your friend and guide to your inner experience. If you don't want to think and go slow, this is probably not the book for you. It IS heady, but it doesn't feel intellectual at all. Anyone can access this, but it will require you to slow down, think, and apply what you read if you want it to be meaningful.

During the past several years, frequent, recurring nightmares have disturbed my sleeping dreams. A co-worker and healer suggested that dreams recur because they are trying to get a message through and that I might enjoy reading CONSCIOUS DREAMING.Enjoy is not the descriptor I would use for how I interacted with this book. Words more like absorb or consume might be better. I was mesmerized. The writer, Australian born American Shaman, Robert Moss is a dreamer, workshop leader, and author. His voice is authentic and speaks from personal experience and vicarious experience sharing his own dream worlds and those of others. He gives practical and impractical, but workable advise about how to be present to the dreamworlds while waking, sleeping, or journeying, giving examples of how one might hear or see the message being sent. Among these possibilities are incubating a dream (asking for an answer to a specific question to come to you in the dream state before going to sleep) and a special way he shares for recording the dream story upon awakening and processing the dream. The writer also gives many examples of dream stories told in dream-groups or workshops and how the dreams came to be understood by the dreamer. His most important point: you are the master interpreter of your own dreams. For me, this book and one particular other, (JOURNEY OF SOULS, Michael Newton) informed my own dreamworld study over a two-and-one-half year period following the deaths of my parents in 2009, especially focused on the nightmares I mentioned.I am profoundly changed for the better, and further am currently working to finish a full-length manuscript of poetry born out of that study, messages from the ether I continue to process and integrate into my world view and understanding.I own this book. I will keep and revisit this book. I highly recommend it to you, the dreamer seeking consciousness and connection with the dreamworlds.

Fantastic read. If you are a conscious dreamer and wish to enhance your skills whilst dreaming this is a perfect book to guide you into conscious dreaming. Robert Moss is an expert and has wondered through many dreamlands to be able to provide his readers with detailed knowledge of what to expect and what not to miss. Better to read this book than the commercialized dream dictionaries. You can learn how to analyze your dreams yourself depending on your own beliefs, because all symbols have different meanings for every individual. Every dream is important even if it seems insignificant and every dream holds a symbol, a key or a message to a question sought.

Conscious Dreaming presents Robert Moss's methodology for exploring and understanding dreams. This is not a book that gives you a fix interpretation of dreams, but instead, helps you find your own. It's a journey full of personal stories that help you flesh out the inner working of what dreaming is really about. This book is organized as follows:Introduction: Summoned by DreamPart One Active Dreaming1. Becoming A Dream Catcher2. Nine Keys to Your Dreams3. Exploring Dream with Partners4. Conscious Dreaming5. Shamanic DreamingPart Two Dreams of Power6. Using Dream Radar7. Dream of the Departed8. Dream Guides and Guardian Angels9. Dreams of Healing10. The Creative Power of DreamsFrom the introduction, you get a glimpse of the author's experience with dreaming. This work is obviously influenced by his shamanic experience.
