This is an excellent book for somebody just starting out using troubleshooting tools. NETSTAT, IFCONFIG, IPCONFIG and WINIPCFG, ARP and PING are the utilities that are described and included in the book and more. .

If you only have the time to read or money to buy one book on TCP/IP troubleshooting, then make it this one! Chapter 5 alone is worth it's weight in gold!

I have been involved with networks and networking for over 12 years and I am always looking for new ways to make sure the network is running at its best, this book has provided me ideas that I hadn't thought of before and the information is easy enough to understand.The author packs a serious amount of information in the 325 plus pages. Well documented and well laid out the author begins by showing you how to troubleshoot and what steps you'll have to take in the problem resolution process.Using NETSTAT, IFCONFIG, IPCONFIG and WINIPCFG, ARP and PING are some of the utilities that are broken down and included in the book. Working with Windows, Windows NT/2000 and UNIX networks is the focus of the book.Other topics included are working with and the breakdown of cables and cabling, use of TRACEROUTE or TRACERT, analyzing traffics and packets through filtering and SNMP. Checking out the performance of the network is also an essential item and the author shows what traffic and bandwidth tools you can use.Finally FTP and TFTP servers and utilities are covered as well as troubleshooting planning. Overall for the network technician of all skill levels should be able to benefit from something in this book - well done.

Eh, book was okay, but didn't really flip my burger. If you want a nice primer on some of the software tools and commands that you can use for monitoring system performance, this book would probably be just fine. Could have used more graphics. Good for reading at bedtime or in your time off, but just a little too wordy looking if you're in the field actually trying to get something done.

I bot this book for a friend who is a Jr-Mid level network (Unix) admin., who needed advice on this topic. This book does cover all the necessary topics. It's understandable, not overwhelming, and, as the TOC shows, covers lots of useful, relevant topics. It's also very practical. Worth buying!

This might be a decent reference book if it contained more detailed information. I am a junior in college and was required to read this book from cover to cover and it was extremely boring. Anything the author discussed could easily be learned from help files or a quick glance at the website the product came from. THe author uses the phrase 'this is beyond the scope of this book' just when he begins to talk about something you may not have already known.In conclusion, this would probably be an excellent book for somebody just starting out using troubleshooting tools, but if you have had more then 6 months experience in the field you already know most of the topics he covers.

4 stars -- I'm often loathe to read books that are so highly regarded by so many people, b/c I'm always worried I will be the black sheep. And I sort of am in a way for this book, in that unlike my friends, this was not a full 5 star read for me. In fact, part 1 was not super compelling for me. Ms. Harmon's writing is really beautiful, but it's not always my favourite style personally. It's really...lyrical? Or you know, just more formal and literary-like than is usually my bag. I just end up enjoying more straightforward writing sometimes. Ms. Harmon is actually one of the few authors that tends to break me from my norm b/c her storylines are just very heartfelt and emotional, and they are worth taking me outside my comfort zone.I was so glad that a few of my friend's reviews mentioned that this story had a paranormal aspect, b/c I would have been really surprised otherwise. Not that I don't love a paranormal touch, but I hadn't expected it from this story when I bought it so long ago. But it was really intriguing, and I loved the way it was woven into the story, and the way it was described. And how it changed and molded Moses, and how it affected his relationship with Georgia.So why did Part 1 not compel me? It was Moses. He was kind of a dick. I mean, I could sort of understand why he was the way he was, and I sort of understood how he became that way and why he acted the way he did towards Georgia...but at the same time I needed something to pull me in, and I don't feel like I got enough from his perspective to really have me give him enough benefit of the doubt.And Georgia was definitely more interesting of a character, but I couldn't always understand who she was all the time either. But I think that's my failing, not the failing of the book. I enjoyed how different she was, how spunky and straightforward and how she saw something special in Moses.I didn't expect all the different aspects to the story...not just the paranormal aspect, but the mystery as well. And while I could see that the mystery was going to come into play, I can say that I didn't predict the outcome to that at all. And while I knew this book was going to slay me, I don't think I knew in quite what way and so it still really got me. I'm definitely glad I packed my pockets full of kleenexes for the end of this story, b/c I used them all.So in the end it was part 2 that really made this book for me. It was full of heartache and beauty and growth and just sucked me in and made me feel and gave me exactly what I was looking for. And now I'm definitely going to have to read Running Barefoot. Super intrigued. And that's my distracted review.

I will start by saying that I have had weird experiences with books over the years, but not one book has caused me to cry and just pray to God, and every other deity there is, that this book would not cause me to come undone. It is such a powerful story, and everyone – everywhere – should read this book. I don’t care what age (maybe not those of you under 14), color, gender, sexual orientation, etc…. This book makes you believe in something other than what’s in front of your face. It’s about pain and love and all things in between. There is no religion motives behind this story. Though, some may think otherwise. Choose how you walk away from reading it. It’s touching and tragic, but most of all, it’s healing. I didn’t think I would be able to type this review without crying. I was right.Moses Wright is the most unique character that I have had the pleasure of reading about. His gift (or curse, if you want to say that) is something out of this world. God, I need to sit down with Amy Harmon and ask her some questions. If I tell you about Moses, the story will be ruined for you. So, I will not. I’ve read of troubled characters, but nothing could have prepared me for his story. NOTHING! I am so glad that I purchased this book after reading a review a couple of months ago.Georgia Shepherd. What to say about this young lady? She’s not one of those whiny, promiscuous girls that roam so many young adult novels. She is far from it. And though she does tend to follow Moses around and make him talk to her, I felt that it was more of that therapy creeping in. She wanted him to unleash his troubles unto her and heal him. Somewhere along the way, the feelings and longing took over. By the time I hit 20%, I thought that I knew what was coming. How wrong was I. It’s more than love at stake here – it’s life or death.I’m not familiar with horses, and the therapy that is used in this book. From a readers standpoint, the author did an amazing job of bringing that into the story. With the paranormal elements spanning the whole book, I was mesmerized by what each page revealed. I swear I highlighted so many phrases on my Kindle while reading. There are other characters that hold the key to some jaw dropping moments. I can’t say I was surprised by who the perpetrator was. I started assuming as soon as that character was introduced. And my my my, Tag needs to be my BFF (Best Friend Forever or BoyFriend Forever – I can’t decide which). He and Moses came a long way and I’m so glad that they became such good friends. He is just awesome (and hot if I’m being honest). Hell, Moses is hot!Long story short, this is just THE most amazing story. As much as I cried, there were some great moments in here as well. It’s dark at times, but don’t let it steer you from experiencing this amazing writing. I HIGHLY recommend this book. I will pimp it until I die!

There's exploration of love and the human condition, mystery, star-crossed lovers, small-town dynamics and throughout, an element of the supernatural.The characters jump off the page as they tell their stories that come together to shape this unique and unforgettable tale. There's real heart, demonstrating what it is to truly love and the value of forgiveness, family and practicing gratitude, come what may. There's no place that drags, the story unfolds beautifully. The ending is perfect. I am 100 percent satisfied and recommend to any who love a great book, a thriller/mystery that is told with subtle deftness and a work of great heart and art. Brava!

McKay Jenkins did a wonderful job of capturing the the bittersweet of the one who climbs. As a sister of Raymond Martin, I can tell you I was deeply moved by the words and his expertise at keeping my eyes on the pages. I could not put the book down. I regret only that my mother, Ruby, didn't get to see the final piece of work. She related to us the kindness and empathy that Mr. Jenkins expressed during the interviews. I stood at that mountain floor many times since the tragedy and am still in awe of the great beauty which Jenkins painted so poetically in his book. The spirit and courage of the climber is known only to the spirit of another climber and sometimes to those who were fortunate enough to love him/her. Mr. Jenkins has obviously felt the pain and the exhilaration of reaching the heights and the defeats while exploring the masterpieces in nature. Many thanks for his talent and for his informative understanding of the powers of nature. I am eternally grateful for the many people who opened their arms to my family and for those people who spent time on the mountain in search for the boys. Mr. Jenkins depicted their integrity and courage very well.

Riveting reading.

Compelling story of a mountain tragedy.

This book does a great job of blending snow science and the history of human avalanche experience with a compelling personal story of five unfortunate young climbers. If the scientific and historical perspectives in this book had been available to these climbers, their story would likely be a different one. Anyone interested in skiing or climbing in mountainous backcountry should find this book to be informative, intriguing, and, if not for the tragedy, enjoyable. This book presents the dry text of snow science in a package that will hold your interest. Though flawed in its accuracy regarding personal history, details of mountaineering and local geography, it provides knowledge about the nature of snow and its metamorphosis that any mountain adventurer should be aware of. I am sending a copy to a friend who teaches avalanche awareness classes, as I know he'll thoroughly enjoy it...in spite of the tragedy.

I found this book to be well written and engaging throughout. The story revolves around a 1969 tragedy on Glacier National Park's Mount Cleveland. The author delves into to the background and character of each young man involved and some of the rescuers as well. The whole is interwoven with scientific and historical information regarding avalanches. I almost gave this book five stars but for the lack of detail surrounding the final attempt on the mountain. This through no fault of the author, there simply remains a great deal of mystery surrounding the events retold.

This book is a must read for anyone who likes books about mountaineering, and outdoor adventure, or for that matter, anyone who has ever set foot on a snow covered mountain. It is the story of five young men who perish in a huge avalanche while trying to climb the yet unscaled north face of Mount Cleveland, in Glacier National Park. But it is much more then just this story. Jenkins skillfully weaves within his book the history of avalanches and the grim effects they can have upon those who seek to conquer the mountains. And he will convince you that beneath the beauty of a snow-covered mountain lies a living and breathing monster in waiting. In the author's own words, "Hiking or skiing in avalanche country is like walking around in a valley you know to be inhabited by grizzly bears." It is a chilling reminder of the fury Mother Nature can wreak upon us. Buy this book, but read it in the confines of your warm home far away from any snow covered mountain. --Paul S.

Like "Into Thin Air", "The Perfect Storm" and almost any book by McKay's mentor Peter Matthieson, The White Death both grips you and informs you. McKay spins out the story of five boys on a mountain slowly, letting the suspense build as he provides more information on avalanches than could be found in any one place. He pitches the book at a level that flatters the reader's intellect. You get it, but you never feel he has watered it down for that purpose.A footnote: I met McKay last summer in Nicaragua. I like him personally and hoped the book would be good. I was up until 1:00 AM to finish it. That's more than friendship -- that's a good read.

I recently read The White Death, and I can tell you, its a fantastic book. There's a wealth of information about the science of snow and avalanches, interwoven with a story of the highest drama that's both compassionately and conscientiously told. Furthermore, I appreciate Jenkin's perspective. As an outsider to the sport of mountaineering, he makes the world of climbing understandable to those of us who prefer to remain at lower altitudes. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
