I don't usually write reviews, but I feel I owe this to Tim Richards for giving me what I've always wanted--someone to show me how to really play the piano. I am 68 years of age. I have never had piano lessons, and never wanted to play classical piano. I taught myself to play the chords and follow the melody line of a "fake" book. But I've always wanted to just sit down at the piano and kind of improvise and play the blues or boogie woogie. I've worked with the book now for 26 days-almost 4 weeks for approximately an hour a day. I am on Page 37. This book is like the Blues Bible. Tim takes you just at the right pace to learn what you need to know. And I can take his book at my own pace. I have learned from his book that it's all about the chords, and how to work them with the left and right hand to get the rhythm, harmony, and melody you desire. I couldn't do this by myself without the book because I wouldn't have the confidence to know I was doing the right thing, but now I know. I have tried learning from other books, but they were nothing like this one. This is the one. I downloaded all the demos he provided on the CD to my iTunes. They are great because they show you how the piece should sound, and that you are doing it correctly. I am really playing piano now! Thank you Tim.

God this is a great book!I can't say enough about this book if you're looking to make your way into the world of Blues and New Orleans style piano playing. This book is a direct pipeline to that world.I'm primarily a guitar player who has been spending a good amount of time at the piano in the last couple of years. I'm also a music book junkie. I've collected a personal library of music books, guitar books, piano books, etc. And of all the innumerable books I've collected, this one might be the best. Not just because of where it aims to take you, but because of its layout. I own books that contain much more musical information than this book contains, but none of the other books I own come remotely close to providing a layout that takes you from the most basic form of a style to exercises that are cool and very much akin to the foundation blocks that all the great players used to build their masterpieces, as quickly as this book does.I had some previous piano experience before starting in on this book, but by no means was it extensive. So although I wouldn't consider this book the best place to start for somebody that was starting piano or music exploration from scratch, I would consider it a great place to start for somebody looking to get to the the aforementioned piano styles that had at least a little bit of prior experience. Essentially a late beginner or early intermediate player. Or if you're like an unleashed pit bull and you DO want to start here from scratch it is doable if you're ready to really put the work in. The provided CD gives you a recording of almost every example and exercise in the book, so armed with that, it makes the knowledge in this book very accessible. The bottom line is that this is a great, great book. I highly recommend it not because it has more information in it than any other book but because of the way that information is presented. It reconstructs blues piano from the ground up, and encourages you to understand all the building blocks so that you can start playing something pleasing and even improvising quickly. It also lays the material in front of you in such a way that you can quickly understand how all the building blocks fit together to construct the music. I've seen a lot of books that have more information but at the end still leave you wondering as to how all that information really fits together to make something "musical". This book does a superior job at giving you the knowledge to make something musical in the blues piano idiom right from the beginning.Tim Richards deserves to be commended for the amount of work, insight, and vision that went into making this book. After I got my hands on this book I soon after got every other book that Tim Richards wrote based on how great this one was. I got all of his other books despite the fact that I will be using this book for years to come, and who knows when I'll have the time to get into his other works.

This is probably the best blues piano book out there. It starts out fairly basic, but quickly expands to an intermediate or advanced level. It's a very comprehensive book printed on high-quality, glossy paper. I also like the blues biographies that are included with each section. My only complaint might be that it isn't spiral bound, but a book this size would be difficult to produce in a spiral-bound format. If you are an absolute beginner, this may be too advanced and you might consider starting out with something like Faber & McLean's "Blues Improv" book. But, after working your way through that (short) introduction, this book by Tim Richards will take you the rest of the way home. Highly recommended.

This book is recommended for intermediate-level pianists. I have some previous experience self-learning the piano, and I also have some knowledge of how to read music. But I am far from what I would consider to be intermediate-level pianist. I took a chance and bought this book anyway, and I'm really glad I did. I find the beginning lessons to be totally accessible to my skill level as basically a raw beginner. Now in saying this I don't mean that I can just sit down and play these pieces fluently. But they are certainly within reach with practice. In other words, they are pieces that I can actually play, but not smoothly without much practice. And this is mostly due to finger training and getting a feel for what Tim Richards calls "On-Off" rhythm timing. So I'm really pretty much starting from scratch here, yet I'm finding these beginning lessons in the Triads section of the book to be quite accessible.I really like the way he has his lessons laid out complete with many comments, tips, and special assignments to expand upon using improvisational techniques. So even as basically a raw beginner I find the book to be very accessible and useful. I'll be in the very early chapters for quite some time to come, so I can't comment on the more advance parts of the book. But for me, even just these early chapters are well worth the price. It's a super fantastic book, just filled to the brim with advice, explanations, assignments, and comments on every page. No wasted space in this book.Like some others have said, Just buy it. You can't go wrong.

Like Alex's mother, I am a Mensan and an experienced climber. In fact, I run the Mensa Climbing Group in Kansas City. And like Alex (at least in the beginning), I am a gym climber. But unlike Alex, I don't climb 5.14d routes. My maximum is 5.12a, and that's top-roped on a fairly short pitch. He would also smoke me on bouldering problems (V7 is my current max). This book is very well-written, and Mark Synnott clearly understands climbing. He shared some insights that were new for me, and I appreciate that. Synnott seems to take a long time after Chapter One to get to the actual climb up El Capitan or to much about Alex Honnold at all. For most other kinds of books, I would consider this a defect. But this book is different. First, all that prelude is just darn good reading. It also has strategic value in understanding Alex Honnold, especially in relation to other elite climbers. The insight you get into other climbers, including the author, allows you to correctly place Alex in the pantheon of climbers. Without that background, it would be hard for most readers to understand just how spectacular this feat was.Second, I believe the primary audience for this book is climbers. Synnott spends little time explaining climbing, and that's probably a good thing. The book is already long due to all that prelude, no sense in making it tedious too. But isn't the length a problem? I would say not for a climber. A key characteristic of climbing is it is a sport of intense focus and concentration. Another characteristic is it is extremely hard to become proficient in climbing. It takes hundreds of hours of practice to become proficient enough to smoothly send 5.10 routes or V3 problems. Flailing up (and/or across) the wall or muscling your way through the problem does not constitute climbing. It takes dozens or maybe even hundreds more to move from5.10 to 5.11 and from V3 to V4.I see a huge drop-off at V4. Probably only 20% of the people who can consistently send V4 problems can send a V5, and maybe 20% of those can send V6. I climb V7 now, and though I climb at 4 different gyms I know very few people who climb V9 or above. The last time I top-roped, the hardest problem set at that gym was a 5.12a (there were two of them). So if you're writing a book whose target demographic is people who are known for intense concentration and for putting in hundreds of hours to develop their climbing skills, you had better not write a thin puff piece. Now that I have covered what may be a common complaint about this book, let me cover what is the least common complaint about any book. Like the other Mark, I am a professional writer. Who better to judge what other people write? I often cringe at grammatical gaffes, because they are so common. They just don't show up in this book. It seems the other Mark pays as much attention to getting writing right as he does to getting climbing right. As we climbers say when someone does a gnarly move well, "Nice!"On to some particulars about the book's content. It runs 403 pages (in the pre-release proof copy I have), including the Prologue (a really good read), Author's Note, and Acknowledgements.Sometimes movies are structured with an opening scene in which we see the hero in predicament. Then there's some text that says "One week ago" or something like that, and a story unfolds from there. We get back to the opening scene, after which the story picks up where we first came in and the hero solves the dilemma. This book is structured like that. Chapters Two through Five provide an important, and well-told, back story.Part One, "Youth," consists of four chapters. Chapter One is half a dozen pages long, and it sets the stage for the titular free solo climb that is about to happen. Then Chapter Two takes us back to Synnod's beginning as a climber.Part Two, "The Professional World," consists of four chapters. In Chapter Five, we read about the elite climber Alex Lowe and Synnott's adventures with him. We also read about Lowe's death. In Chapter Six, we catch up with Alex Honnold again but we're not picking up where we left off with Chapter One (that will come later). An important dynamic here is Honnold chides Synnott for being too cautious, teasingly calling him "Mr. Safety."Part Three, "Topping Out," consists of four chapters. Now that we have gotten to know Alex better via the previous three chapters, we find in Chapter Nine there is serious exploration into how he controls his fear when climbing. This includes a scan of his amygdala, and an analysis of the results. And Part Three includes the final chapter, in which we read about various moments of the historic climb.I found this book deeply entertaining and informative. I hope it inspires more people to take up climbing. The sport has come a long way from its renegade days when Synnott got started. With climbing gyms popping up all over the country, there is plenty of opportunity for people to take up this demanding sport and fit their climbing into a normal life and normal schedule. It isn't necessary to do dangerous climbing to enjoy climbing. The reportable accident rate among USA climbing gyms is 0.07 per 1,000 visitor hours. Compare that to the 2.3 injuries per 1,000 visitor hours of cross-fit gyms. Climbing is almost 3300% safer! In fact, serious accidents in climbing gyms happen less often than falls while hill walking. And of course, climbing is far safer than texting while driving.People have asked me if I'm content to limit myself to gym climbing, and sometimes say, "Are you going to do real climbing some day?" In answer, I send them to my YouTube channel (search "Mark Lamendola climbing) and encourage them to visit a gym and try one of those. Honnold learned climbing at climbing gyms, not because it is fake and easy in those settings but because it is hard and in a controlled environment. Where he took it from there is amazing.New climbers are challenged by a 5.6, breathing hard and finding their arms pumped out after only one climb. That's on a fairly short pitch, maybe 20 or 30 feet. The ceiling for most "weekend warrior" climbers seems to be about 5.10b. Climbing several long pitches back to back when they are as hard as 5.14d is superhuman, and that's what I want people to understand about this achievement. It was so far beyond the abilities of most climbers, it's awe-inspiring.Thanks, Mark Synnott, for this book.

It’s pretty dang awesome. Highly recommended. Alex Honnold, the world’s greatest climber, went 3000 feet up shear mountain face, alone with no ropes. An achievement so incredible that the New York Times called it “one of the great athletic feats of any kind, ever.” And since free solo climbing involves life and death risk management at altitude, we all can both marvel and learn along the way.Writing about his friend Dean Potter’s death flying a wingsuit down a mountain, Alex says:“No one spends 20 years at the cutting edge of their sport by being an adrenaline junkie all the time. Most people had only seen his climbing and flying through short YouTube videos and never got a glimpse of the years of training behind them. Dean actually had a thoughtful and conservative approach, building up to things slowly over time as he became physically and psychologically prepared.”Good stuff. But what’s great about this book is most of it shows us this process, rather than being Alex safety lectures. It’s written by his friend and climbing companion, an insider who has climbed El Cap over 20 times, who also has written for magazines like National Geographic, Climbing, Skiing, Outside, etc. Smooth easy style. It goes deeper. For example, on risk, some argue that the risks of wingsuit flying or free solo climbing are immoral. But Alex saw these people as hypocrites because many of them risked their own lives on a daily basis by sitting on the couch eating potato chips:“I was 19 when my father died from a heart attack. He was a 55-year-old college professor and had led what was by all appearances a risk-free life. But he was overweight, and heart disease runs in our family. No matter the risks we take, we always consider the end to be too soon even though in life more than anything else quality should be more important than quantity.”In addition to his life, and his life climbing, this smart readable book covers some bigger ideas. What is climbing? Is Alex’s brain not right? Does social media and GoPro help or hinder? And is there Zen at the top of mountains? It covers Alex’s history, his girlfriend, his other climbs. It’s not too technical, but enough that we get the real feeling of modern climbing techniques. It covers his first attempt at El Cap, and the later victorious assent, four hours of life-and-death flow. It cycles back to the what is climbing question. Or rather why?“My own awareness of being on a stage … precluded the Zen I had always found in climbing.”For such an ambitious book of climbing, climbing ethos, and insight into climbings greatest triumph, it's quite, well, grounded. Readable. Relatable. Hope this review helps you.

From Booklist

The clever and inventive Lunch Lady along with her protgs, elementary-school students Dee, Hector, and Terrence, take on the titular bad guy in another satisfying episode of schoolwide politics, derring-do, and a bit of appealing fantasy, culminating in the attack of the villains supercharged Buszilla. A know-it-all fellow student, a crusading health teacher, and a maniacal bus driver are among Krosoczkas funny and over-the-top red herrings. The high action of the yellow-washed, black-and-white cartoon panels is echoed in the narratives pacing. The end clearly sets up the gangs next adventure. Grades 2-4. --Francisca Goldsmith

I read this...to make sure it was appropriate for my great nieces and nephews. At first I was a little dubious but re-read and second time and decided there wasn't anything really bad and it was in comic form which would appeal. My goal was to get a 9 and 12 year old interested in reading for the fun of reading. This does the trick. I keep them at my house so the kids have something to read when they're here. It took them two visits to finish one of the books...and the big clue that they were a success was that I didn't have to remind them about the books on the second visit. They started looking for them when they walked in the door. Thanks Lunch Lady! You did the trick!

My son loves this series. He has read the whole series more than once, he is eight. I lent them to his friend who has a type of ADHD and he loved them. His mother loved the fact that he sat down and read the whole book and couldn't wait to read the rest of the series. I have found that sometimes it is hard to get little boys to read, these are comic style, but at least they are getting used to finding entertainment through reading/books vs. electronics

I bought a bunch in this series for my class library but the humor I find in Baby Mouse and the Squish series just isn't there. I read this series with my child. They were popular in the school library but I didn't find them that engaging as far as purchasing and reading these in comparison with some of the other series I bought. Good concept but needs to be funny!

bought this for our school library. didn't realize right away that one section of 8 pages is duplicated twice at the end of the book. one of our students just told us about it. sadly, we will probably need to pull the book because it is missing the ending!!

I gave this to my best friend's 6 year old daughter for Christmas. She already had the first few books and she was excited to get more!

Great books

The book provides a familiar setting for young readers. The reading level is about second grade. The reader has both pictures and words to draw them into the story.

My niece put this on her Christmas list and when I purchased it I looked at it to make sure it was age appropriate and it certainly is and very entertaining

I generally like Haynes manuals for cars and motorcycles. I don't like to see lots of advice comments like "take it to the dealer", which this issue seems to favor. IF you have the Bentley product and for some reason you want more info, and you find this one at a bargain, go for it.

I found that there were many things to read in this book, that will help the avid BMW driver. If you need to find out how to find the functionality of your BWM, this is the book for you!

As a drug policy expert, I have to admit, I wasn’t sure how well I’d do reading this book. I have a harder time getting into non-fiction books these days — I spend most of my time reading things online, and I’ve read so much about the war on drugs that it’s hard to get excited about reading a book about it.But less than halfway through the first chapter, I couldn’t put it down – it’s an amazing read. Johann has done something really phenomenal with this book, by combining compelling storytelling with the factual highlights of the abominable history of the war on drugs, plus an undeniable blueprint for replacing that war.For drug policy experts like me, it’s a great read with some fascinating personal perspectives, while filling in a few historical knowledge gaps. Definitely a reading highlight. But if you're an average politically-aware reader who doesn’t know all that much about the drug war, I think you'll find it even more valuable. Here, in one book, you get good stories with all the verified information you need to become informed on this critical issue. I plan on buying a few copies to give to friends to read.Additionally, you'll learn through detailed analysis that much of what you think you know about addiction is wrong.Hari starts with the biggest villain of all — Harry Anslinger — by researching through all his diaries and files stored at Penn State University. I’ve known mostly about Anslinger’s war against marijuana, and now learned a few more things about what he did to get the war on drugs started in full force in the book.Johann Hari provides us, throughout the book, with incredible access to individual players in the drug war. For the history, in addition to Anslinger, his research provides detailed insights into:-- Billy Holiday, a jazz singer and drug user whose paths crossed with Anslinger’s, and-- Arnold Rothstein, who invented the modern drug gang, and was the first major figure in organized drug crime in the United States. And as Hari moved us to the present and future, these personal stories came from actual extensive interviews with an amazing array of individuals, including:-- Chino Hardin, a drug dealer for years in Brooklyn, who started his business when he was 14 years old.-- Leigh Maddox, a state trooper who later turned away from the drug war.-- Rosalio Reta, a killer for the Zetas in Mexico, who resides in a prison in Texas.-- Marisela Escobedo, who refused to accept her daughter’s murder by drug traffickers, and led protests in Mexico, until she was assassinated in front of the government palace (interviews were with family and friends).-- Gabor Maté and Bruce Alexander, who developed new ways of looking at addiction, while working with addicts in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.-- Bud Osborn, a poet and homeless addict who helped transform that area of Vancouver and bring about the notion of rights for addicts.-- Ruth Dreifuss, former President of Switzerland, who supported and promoted harm reduction approaches, including heroin clinics.-- João Goulão, who helped lead a revolution in drug policy in Portugal.-- José Mujica, president of Uruguay, who brought marijuana legalization to his country.… and we learn about the players in the very different legalization approaches in Washington and Colorado.Good stories, compelling arguments, and powerful facts (all fact-checked by the author and editors, with over 65 pages of notes, and a website with actual audio tapes of the interviews for those who want more).I think this is the most important book about the drug war and addiction out today.

I won't repeat what others have said here about the basic content of the book. I agree with its overall message, the writing is brisk and compelling overall, and it is a message many people need to hear in a format many people will be able to appreciate. In general this a courageous and heartfelt look at the war on drugs and the disaster that has ensued everywhere it has been waged, and I would recommend it to pretty much anyone. But I do feel I need to put a bit of a damper on all the glowing 5-star reviews here. As a neuroscientist and someone who has thought about drugs, drug policy, and the drug war a lot, there are some serious issues here that I haven't seen pointed out in some other reviews.First, Hari is neither a scientist, nor a historian, nor a physician - and it shows. The book is essentially one long anecdote, and hard numbers and statistics are few and far between. It could be argued that this isn't the point of the book, but nonetheless it is a shortcoming when an author purports to be documenting the facts and real-world outcomes of decriminalization/legalization.Second, I found that despite his 3-year, 30,000-mile odyssey to explore the war on drugs, ultimately Hari still seemed naive and poorly informed about it all. By nearly page 300, he is still dumbfounded and incredulous at the idea that alcohol might in fact be among the most harmful substances in use today - it all seems so "counterintuitive" to him. These are the kind of numbers/findings that anyone who takes this topic seriously should have found in week one, not the kind of thing that one should be doubting with a gut reaction after years of research into the topic.A similar example is Hari's hand-wringing and agonizing over the idea that his precious nieces and nephews might be harmed by smoking a joint (as if they aren't doing it anyway). Here Hari cites a deeply flawed and widely criticized scientific article claiming that marijuana use in adolescence "damages IQ for life" and brings up the example of a friend who smoked a lot and now thinks it harmed him for life. There just doesn't seem to be any context here - as David Nutt (interviewed in the book) has pointed out, horse-riding causes way more brain damage than drugs in the UK, but no one thinks of it as a scourge of the youth that should be fretted over. Here in North America it's concussions from football and hockey, which again hardly raise an eyebrow. And look at the way we let our children eat, for crying out loud, and the ensuing obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. That anyone who has thought about these issues in depth is actually wasting time worrying about young people smoking a joint is shocking to me.Third is the snide treatment of Timothy Leary. Hari spends page after page treating everyone he comes across in his journey with the utmost compassion. Whether they have lived as thieves, murderers, torturers for drug cartels, etc., all of them are portrayed as victims of an unfair system, unfair childhoods, unfair what-have-you – and this is a fair enough viewpoint with much truth to it. But when it comes to Timothy Leary, Hari's bleeding heart is suddenly dry. Leary is dismissed in less than a page as a psychopath who scared all the 'normal' people and ruined the whole decriminalization party for everyone else. No matter that Leary himself suffered from alcohol addiction and the traumatic suicide of his first wife; no matter that without his proselytizing it's very unlikely any of us would be having this conversation today; no matter that he originally advocated gentle decriminalization and a licensing system so that everyone could use substances responsibly and is pretty much the grandfather of the modern movement; no matter that for these altogether minimal actions he was hounded by the government for years and incarcerated in a maximum security prison under a life sentence for possession of a trivial amount of marijuana. In short, when it came to the material I knew best (certain aspects of the neuroscience and history), Hari seemed grossly uninformed and/or naive - and this makes me question how much I can trust his reporting and assessment of other issues about which I know less.Overall, I definitely recommend this book and it is well worth reading for the compelling stories within. But I disagree with the majority opinion here that this is some kind of flawless masterpiece. It's a great read, and full of great stories, but this is not scholarship by any stretch; it is at best journalism, and probably better described as a personal memoir. That doesn't necessarily detract at all from its value but the reader should know what they're getting into.

I really think this author can write and I would have been an avid reader of her work but I will not support cliffhangers. I want to pay for a good book not one that takes you to the heat of the story and leaves you hanging. I'm not falling for that gimmick for more money. There are to many authors out there with great books that are complete why waste my time on this. 's. Woodbury you have loss an david read with these tricks for money. Your talent is something you should be proud of, enough to let it make the money without th err gimmicks to lure your audience. What a was

Was very disappointed when the first book started with two star crossed characters and they abruptly ended and started over with siblings whose journey also abruptly ended in the book. After that, I was not interested in more short lived tales. However, the book did refer you to your local book store to get more information on the characters started in this book. Do not recommend at all.

While each of these stories are definitely good beginnings, it was extremely disappointing to find out that they are not stand alone stories. The reader is left hanging unless he/she buys the next book and then the next.......... So, while Ms Woodbury is a compelling storyteller, I will try a different author and get the whole story.

I had read daughter of time before. It is an excellent book. Actually it is an excellent series. The other 3 stories are good but I dislike 4 cliffhangers.

History fascinates me, and when you add personal journeys I'm hooked. Even if you don't know anything about Wales, you will still be drawn into the its ancient history. You'll fall in love with the characters, and hate to leave them behind in the pages of the book.

incomplete. Stories untold. Scattered. Story lines that are inconsistent, non conforming to the plotline. I want to know where the help the vehicles disappeared to in both time travel plots that never were explained, nor the story line expressed or expounded upon. Time I will Never Get Back. Thought of looking at more books, read reviews and realized, but my losses now! There's only so much readers pissed off I can get before it becomes self abuse.✌💋

I am not a history person, but I do love the way it is presented in these books. I thought that Sarah Woodbury did not have much passion or love in Daughter of Time, but I had to continue the series to see what happened. The other books, as this Prequel, did not have the display of passion between the couples, but there was enough passion for Wales that made up for this.As an alternate history, she wove quite a tale!

Romance is the name of the game in this book. This book delivers what we all want more romance and excitement in our life. Overall I am very well pleased with this book and the excitement it has brought me. This book had me unwilling to put it down until I turned the last page as I was so enthralled with the plot. The author of this book knows how to deliver the good in this romance novel. Would I recommend this book to other people? Yes I would including friends. I absolutely think this is great book. All opinions are my own and they are not influenced by anyone but myself. If this review helped you at all please vote yes below.

#213,807 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This got me started in running which is great and I'll always be grateful (from couch to a half marathon!) but I guess he's one of those freaky flexible people that doesn't need to stretch and doesn't think it's great for anyone (I married one of those people, but I'm the opposite). So I didn't stretch and ended up in (very expensive) physical therapy due to pain from lack of flexibility. If I had any friends that wanted to start running, I think I would steer them towards Runner's World Run Less, Run Faster: Become a Faster, Stronger Runner with the Revolutionary 3-Run-a-Week Training Program instead. I also really liked Daniels' Running Formula-3rd Edition. It's not a light read, but running at the paces he recommends based on my race times did huge amounts for my overall fitness (although I never got faster on his plan).

As someone who is preparing for their first half-marathon, I have never used the Galloway method, although there are several people on the training team who do use it. I wanted to get the book first just to determine the best way to handle my once-weekly long runs over 10 miles. Based on his advice, I was able to get through the first 10-mile run feeling better than the prior week of 8 miles without hitting the wall like I did the week before. That was without even doing any walking. With that said, once I finish this event, I want to try his method in future to see if it helps me feel better, decrease my overall time, and get through the training cycle for another half marathon. The book is well written, easy to understand, and hopefully will help me with that goal. I would recommend this book as it has works for thousands of folks. Have an open mind and see what happens.

I really enjoy this book with the plans and suggestions. Jeff Galloway makes training seem 0% stressful and all about enjoyment. I highly recommend his methods. My 5 star rating is for the methods. The book itself is a bit...unedited. If I had to rate the writing of the book then it would be around 2 stars. It bounces around from point to point, hitting on topics incompletely without telling the reader about the full chapter about the topic later. Also, there are several typographical and conversion errors. A few times the text refers to 'something' later in the chapter (more text, a graph, sections) that never happen....the chapter just ends. Very strange.I wish it had a full marathon training plan too. But, whatever. Its a good plan and I bought his full marathon book as well (arriving today!). I would rather have a book full of good, sound, enjoyable ideas than a perfectly edited book full of technical-intimidating information.

In my opinion, the best book I have read in this sport, but it can be improved by inclusion of:1. marathon programs.2. The magic mile trial.I like the scheme used for shelter publications to present the information in this book. If Mr. Galloway include in this book the two points indicated above in other edition, he doesn't need to publish more about the topic. Period. Higly recommended reading. Combine this book with "Marathon you can do it!" and you'll have all the information about theory of run-walk-run method.

"Galloway's Book on Running" by Jeff Galloway has become a running classic, providing the basics about running, training, and racing for years.Galloway does not presume the runner is a casual "New Year's Resolution" jogger who will likely quit in a month. Instead, he looks to build a foundation of sensible workouts, leading to genuine fitness, endurance and speed. He gives instruction of every detail important to new and intermediate runners, from stretching to hydration, from injury management to weight loss, from running for kids to running after age 40.Especially useful for runners looking to transition from running occasionally, to running as a lifestyle. Whether for fitness or for racing, there is enough here to progress through to the next stage. Galloway presents training charts, for example, for those looking to run a 5K. If your goal is to finish the 3.1 mile race, or to run about 17:00, there is a chart customizing the necessary training -- four charts per distance (5K, 10K and half-marathon).Shoes are a key part of a runner's uniform, and there's a chapter on that. There are also sections focused on women's running, the mental aspects of running, and proper form.Jeff Galloway's credentials as a runner are topnotch, but he has years of experience training runners at all levels. I am convinced this book will provide all a runner needs at those crucial early levels and beyond. I fully recommend "Galloway's Book on Running," and am giving it as a gift to a friend this Christmas.Anthony Trendl[...]

I have beenb working with a trainer for over a year and mentioned one day that I had always wanted to be a runner. Slowly I began to jog and then decided that I wanted to go faster. At 69 years of age one has to be careful and cofident. My trainer and this book has be jogging/ running two miles !

This book is perfect for those who have just discovered running and would like a primer on how and how not to train. It's main stregnth is its well-rounded nature, containing everything from historical anecdotes to nutrition and tips for older runners.Galloway's voice is humane and humble. At least in this book, he practices what he preaches: an oversized ego is an obstacle and running is done for the joy it brings. After reading sections of this book, I did some late-night running at the campus track and I could see where a lot of runners were going wrong. They were trying so hard to run that after a few minutes they were exhausted.Galloway's book is more well suited to people who want to take the long and slow road, built on slow and long runs, to greater speed and eventual marathon competition. It might also be a bizarre, yet inspired, gift to your favorite couch potato (Just make sure he or she's not the type to get pissed at such a suggestive gift).
