I was hoping for more day hikes NOT in Yosemite. The only one listed is devil's postpile.

Great trail descriptions and well organized. Clearly the other knows the trail well and has lots of great tips. However, the major problem with this being a book of section hikes is that most of the sections are so difficult logistically that they might as well be impossible. Many of the sections have you entering on the West Side and exiting on the East or vice versa. This makes it nearly impossible for anyone without a private plane waiting for them to spirit them back over the Sierras. In some places it would've been more feasible to at least connect to two eastern trailheads on some of the stretches. What were the authors thinking?

This latest in the Gray Man series is lacking some of the zest that was in the two previous books in the series. This author started out with pure action - as I wrote in a previous review of those earlier works - think Mack Bolan from the 1970's - this author evolved into something much better - however, he has slipped just a bit with this book, Agent in Place.Also, he barely mentions the gear that the characters in the book use, which he had done a masterful job of in his prior books in this series. Always nice to know what gear is getting the nod from the action boys, that Greaney interviews.In this novel, our Gray Man, has no romantic involvements and his two women from the prior book are mentioned only in passing.To me the plot was a little thin, but with action novels one does not expect a lot, but I had gotten used to more in the last few books in this series.The plot is pretty straight forward - the Gray Man is hired to "rescue" the mistress of the leader of a Middle-Eastern country, so, she can be used to help bring about regime change - which of course goes totally sideways and ends up with "our hero" having to travel to the Middle-East on another rescue missing, plus more.The Gray Man is as close as we can currently get to a real "Matt Helm" type of character, but still it was bothersome for the Gray Man to be moralizing about the tactics used by some of the military contractors.If you are into the series - you have to buy this one, just to stay current. If you are not into the series yet - buy them all and read them in order of publication.

Set for the most part in Syria, the story is not only compelling, it mirrors current events and actually helped me understand the dynamics of the Iran, Syrian, Russian connections. "The Gray Man" series never disappoints. I love Court Gentry because he never takes himself too seriously but conveys the requisite seriousness for an "action hero." Great read. You will not want to put the book down!

The writing was incredible and realistic. “Agent in Place” is the 7th book in a series about the Gray Man, Court Gentry, who was a former Christian-In-Action, who continues to provide services to the Agency, as well as his own contract assignments. His assignments are frequently assassinations.Supporters of the Free Syrian Army are in exile in Paris. They are well funded and are focused on bringing down Syrian President Ahmed Azzam (aka Bashar al-Assad). They learn that Ahmed has a mistress, who is a Spanish model and modeling in Paris. Arrangements are made with Court Gentry to kidnap Bianca Medina, as they know that she knows about a meeting taken in Tehran, that should the Russians discover, perhaps would end the dictatorship of Ahmed.Court is successful in the kidnapping, only that it was not easy and was most certainly bloody. At the same time the wife of Ahmed, Shakira al-Azzam (Asma al-Assad) is having an affair with her Swiss financial advisor, and he is a dangerous man that is wanted throughout Europe. Shakira learns of her husband’s mistress and wants Bianca killed while in Europe. The Free Syrian supporters in Europe learn that Bianca has a son, by Ahmed, in Damascus and refuses to help their cause, unless her son can be brought to Europe.Once again Court is called upon, as they need him to go to Syria and snatch the child. Now, who would be crazy enough to go to Syria and snatch the son of the president? Well, that would be Court Gentry, who is not a typical man, and has abilities that most could only dream about.For this reader, reading this novel, it felt like being back on the streets of Damascus. And, what is most interesting is that this novel is in real time, in that the war being fought by several groups is realistically written. It is today’s news. Prior to writing the Gray Man series, Mark Greaney had coauthored the late Tom Clancy novels. While this reader has thoughts about franchising a dead man’s name for novels, Mark Greaney, in his own name, is simply an exceptional writer of action & adventure novels. Time to go on Amazon and order the six previous Gray Man novels.

Book seven in this high octane adventure series has Court Gentry back on the good side with the CIA but now as a freelance operative. While he's waiting for his next assignment with them Gentry takes a job through another group. That's why you will find him sitting in the audience at a top designers fashion show in Paris. Take a deep breath during this sequence of events because from here on out this book is one perilous mission after another.If you are looking for fast paced action, you will have located your target with this story. Greaney has allowed the character of Court Gentry to grow and change over the years so watching how the agent operates in such a hostile environment and yet maintain his values is something I enjoy very much. The political quagmire in the Syria of this novel was complicated to the extreme and yet I'm sure Greaney is using information he gets from his research to let us know what it's like just to survive in a country constantly at war within its borders. As always I learn some great information about the intelligence tradecraft and weaponry from reading one of these novels. I was especially interested in the sniper weapon and shooter capability aspects.While the Court Gentry books are all written to be standalone novels (and this one is no exception) I hope you will enjoy this one so much you will want to go back and pick up the first book (The Gray Man). I have read that first book three times and am still impressed with the intricacy of the plotting. Book seven continues that fine plotting legacy.

I recently completed ready this book as part of a seminary course on Biblical Foundations of Leadership. This is very well written and give excellent insight into the characteristic of what makes great leaders. From my extensive experience in the high tech sector this has applications in the secular as well as the sacred space.

This has become one of my all-time favorite books on the subject of leadership (and I've read books by some of the most well-know leadership experts).Usually I run into two problems with other leadership books. First, some of them are just boring to me. Sometimes I have felt like I'm reading through some dry, academic work. This is not too fun--it seems counterintuitive to try to sharpen your skills with a dull book. Secondly, some leadership books are too repetitive and vague. The information kind of runs together, with one chapter looking suspiciously like the previous chapter.McNeal's book is different. It was a joy to read, and each of the 7 disciplines made a lot of sense to me. Practicing Greatness is more about being a leader than "doing" leadership roles. Reggie McNeal is an excellent author. His material is insightful and practical. This book did not disappoint, even though he his held to a high standard. He goes over seven disciplines that will help a minister practice greatness for God. In the church today, there is a great need for godly men to help with the mission of God in the local flocks. There is a culture that sometimes seeks to destroy talented men for God, but this book will help a leader to practice that which is most important. The author looks at self-awareness, self-management, self-development, the disciple of mission, of decision making, of belonging, and of aloneness. All of the chapters provide insightful advice on the role of the minister in being a man of God that is leading other people to the blessings of the Lord. Being a spiritual leader is different from being a business leader, there are some shared dynamics, but there are also some major differences. I highly recommend this book. Read it slowly, read it during some off time to recharge. You need to allow the words to sink into your heart. This book will make you a better minister.

I'm within a year of retirement from 35+ years as a Senior Pastor. This book contains a lot of practical applications and lessons I had to learn the hard way. So it’s a “must read” for young new leaders (and not just pastors) of today. Now that I'm looking at a change in direction for future ministry, this book and Reggie McNeal’s book, THE PRESENT FUTURE: Six Tough Questions, gives me the courage to take the next step and make the paradigm changes necessary to be an apostolic leader that our new culture and world demands. Now maybe I’ll be free to do what God has really been calling me to!

I fully agree with the above review in all its positive points. This book is superbly researched and superbly written, and it is well worth the very inexpensive price. It is by far the most detailed examination of the architectural history of the U.S. Capitol building that I have come across. However, the actual physical quality of the book leaves a great deal to be desired, which is why I have given this four stars instead of five. The printing job is lousy. Many words are struck out or compressed into the space of one letter. The illustrations look as if they were copied on an old and dirty photocopy machine. This is a particular problem with the photographs, some of which are almost undifferentiated black rectangles. Also, the captions indicate that some of the illustrations were obviously in color, although they are copied in black and white.I would recommend this book for anyone with an interest in the architecture of the U.S. Capitol, but I also would recommend that it be read with other books on the Capitol that have better quality illustrative material.

This is an amazingly complete history of the Capitol, which will give you an overall view of how it, like the country and government it represents, is a patchwork of personalities and compromises. However, there are more than one printing of this book; I highly recommend the hardback if you care about photo reproduction; if you are on a budget, the softbound has all the text, but the reproduction is black & white and can verge on the terrible.

I used to think that the United States Government Printing Office was responsible for putting out lots and lots of documents only politicians and lawyers might find interesting, as well as pamphlets on home canning, fallout shelter design, and other arts. I was thus delighted to find that this government branch has produced a quite beautiful volume, _History of the United States Capitol: A Chronicle of Design, Construction, and Politics_ by William C. Allen. It even has a publication note: "106th Congress, 2d Session / Senate Document 106-29 / Printed pursuant to H. Con. Res. 221," but don't be put off by this. It may be an official US Government publication, but it is a large format book of almost five hundred glossy pages, it is well illustrated, and it is written with no touch of bureaucratese. Cynics alert: the government can do some things very well.Of course, that is what the book itself is about. The Capitol is a real triumph, a gorgeous building that does everything architecture can do to inspire hand-over-the-heart patriotic feelings. Underneath that magnificent dome are wings that are beautifully proportioned and decorated, and it comes as a surprise to learn just how much the building consists of additions that were never anticipated when its first stone was laid in 1793. Indeed, the splendid dome we see now was before just a smaller spherical cap without decoration, and the building consists more of additions than it does of the original structure. We may now think of the building as essentially finished; indeed, historic preservation activists have in recent decades prevented any major additions or changes, but for most of its history, the Capitol has been tinkered with and pieced together. In 1827, Representative Charles Wickliffe of Kentucky addressed the house to complain that the building was not yet finished, and that old men from his district who had worked on it were now amazed to find out that the work was incomplete. Almost ever since, elected representatives within the building have criticized the Capitol, bothered its funding, politicized the selection of architects, and in general acted like politicians. The building remains symbolic in this way: a magnificent outcome has arisen despite the arguing and shenanigans.The book describes the placement upon Jenkins Hill of the "Congress House" within the famous plan of the city drawn up by Pierre L'Enfant. It was Jefferson who insisted that that it be called a "capitol," with roots deep in the Roman republic, emphasizing ancient principles of citizenship and self-government. There was a competition for the design of the original building, but there is not really one original architect, as it was built by compromise between various plans. George Washington insisted on a dome "for beauty and grandeur," but thought it might be a good place to put a clock or a bell. It was the classicist Jefferson who advised Washington on the final design, and who worked intimately with B. Henry Latrobe to produce the initial structure. Prominent within it was the rotunda, with proportions taken almost directly from the Pantheon in Rome. The Jefferson - Latrobe partnership was enormously productive, but not without some conflict. Latrobe, for instance, was in favor of a "lantern" to be raised upon the dome as a means of covering it and allowing for light to enter, but Jefferson was clearly bound to classical precedent; he knew of no such lantern on classical buildings, terming them "degeneracies of modern architecture." By the time the dome was really to be erected, the British had in 1814 burned much of the original building, and Charles Bullfinch designed a relatively low, spherical dome close to the desires of Washington and Jefferson.Latrobe was the first of the architects to deal with the Americanization of classical influence. For instance, the sculptors of the enormous eagle above the Speaker's rostrum produced a weird bird that was distinctly un-American. The Italian sculptor modeled the bird from memory, and it was only after shipments of anatomical parts of a bald eagle to the sculptor that we got an eagle whose inauthenticity would not "be detected by our Western Members." Latrobe also designed novel columns for the inside of the building, capped by magnolias or graceful tobacco leaves rather than the classical acanthus. His most popular feature, however, were the corn columns, the body of which resembled stalks of corn tied together (rather than plain fluting), with a cap of ears of corn. Everyone liked them, and they enabled him to get extra appropriations.The architect who has most to do with the appearance of the Capitol as we know it was Thomas U. Walker, who entered the competition for the expansion of the building, once the old Senate and House chambers were acknowledged as too small. His design of wings for new chambers on either side of the old ones, and connected to them by narrow corridors, was approved by Millard Fillmore in 1851. Walker worked on the creation of the new chambers even though for most of his term the building project would be transferred to the War Department. It is not clear who had the idea for a vertical extension of the low dome into the splendid one we now see, but by the time a certain Representative addressed his colleagues about the fire hazard of the mostly wooden Bulfinch dome, Walker was already designing its replacement. Many of Walker's beautiful drawings and plans for the dome are reproduced here. The dome is of fireproof cast iron, painted to look uniform with the stone of the rest of the building. Miraculously, the colossal and ornate dome exceeded in weight the original, much smaller, masonry and wood dome by only twenty percent. It was not without controversy; there were many in architectural circles who insisted that buildings and materials must be honest and iron should not imitate stone, but this was never a controversy entered by the politicians. The dome had been started by the beginning of the Civil War, but the firm with the contract for the cast iron had over a million pounds of it on site, and kept working even though the government admitted that the war would postpone all payments. During the war, the Capitol was used as a bakery, a barracks, and a hospital. With the confusion of war, the grounds became trampled by hogs and goats, and they rubbed against and discolored the ironwork waiting installation. But the great dome was completed by the time the war was over.There have been extensions to all four sides of the Capitol, and many changes to the interior. While many of the historic decorations have been deliberately retained, a few (and it seems significantly few) changes have done serious damage to what went before. The author notes that the 1950s update of the Senate and House chambers took out all of the high Victorian decoration and replaced it with "pastiches of vaguely classical designs." He sniffs, "Few connoisseurs today look upon the designs with satisfaction, nor has any student of Federal period architecture discovered either authenticity or wit among the details." However, such dismissals are few in this gorgeous book. Allen is himself the architectural historian in the office of the Architect of the Capitol, and so his enthusiasm for the structure is not only obvious but it is exceedingly well informed. He has included the controversies, personality clashes, funding debates, and political bombast here, but nothing can obscure the success and the beauty of this remarkable building, a superbly American temple.

Scott Shupe began his naturalist career in 1971 at the famed Ross Allen Reptile Institute in Silver Springs, Florida. “It’s so pretty” has been my saying every single time that I see my bible. I can’t believe how beautiful and colorful it is. Is it heavy.....yes. Is it big....yes. Did I still take it to church this morning...... you better believe it! Haha! You won’t go wrong with this purchase and I received it a day earlier from what the seller suggested. First of all, I never write reviews even though reading them usually determines my purchase. I received this on Saturday at the 25% discount. Praise God for Christmas prices. This is my second journaling Bible. My first was the Creative KJV, and I am so so glad that I waited for this LARGE PRINT edition. If you like me have difficulty with smaller print, this will not disappoint with the font being at least 11 font.When the package arrived it was heavy. Once opened, I was surprised how heavy the Bible; this will be your stay at home Bible unless you have a Bible journaling group and you will have this in a rolling cart.This is so exciting. I absolutely love the purple cover and how the edging has purple flowers. The inside front and back covers have beautifully prints to color. While the pages are not tissue thin, I would not use watercolor unless you test with Gesso firsr. I would stick to pencils and gel pens. There are plenty of print pages for coloring, and blanks for those who are more creative. What I love is that the publishers listened to suggestions from previous editions with no back to back prints. The only one's are the last page of a book and the first page of the book. My only complaint is they did not include the pocket with the freebies. This will make a great gift whether you're a newbie or seasoned in journaling. I will add more after further investigatiion.

Love, love, love. This is the most beautiful bible I have ever owned. It is big, it lies flat, the pages aren't too thin but I will use coloring pencils. I own a few bibles but for me this is pretty perfect, it would be great if this also came in the English Standard Version, but never-the less, this one is just pure JOY.

I love this Bible. Very heavy didn’t realize it was going to be so heavy and bulky but it is. Easy to read I enjoy doing the coloring. My granddaughter has a smaller one and we colored a lot this weekend in it. The print is a little bit smaller than what I was hoping for I hoped it would be a bigger print but I guess the book would’ve been happier if the print had been any bigger than what I have..

I won this bible for myself from Tyndale in a contest. I was over the moon when it arrived in the mail. Prior to that I also purchased 3 of the large print original inspires as gifts for my daughters to customize for them as well as a small print inspire for myself and the psalms and proverbs books. I came back to Amazon recently to purchase the inspire praise for a friend at church. I brought my bag of inspire products for her to look through and she fell in the love with the Praise. The purple is just so lovely. Definitley would recommend this or any of the inspire Praise bibles or Palms and Proverbs books as well. You will not be disappointed. I was not sure how I would feel about the NLT as I really leaned to the CSB and ESV translations prior. But I've really enjoyed this translation very much and found it's my go to for reading. If you are thinking of this for yourself or someone as a gift, you will not be disappointed. Would make a great gift for yourself or anyone in your life looking to spend time in the word while coloring beautiful artwork. Also love the space for writing notes as well.

The large print is wonderful!! Beautiful colors and love the vellum inserts.

I love this bible. It's in a different version than I am used to. The context is the same or similar to NASB or NIV. Its beautiful. I am enjoying taking notes and coloring in the margins. I love reading God's word.It's a big heavy bible. The purple cover is gorgeous.

Absolutely beautiful. I got the big size one. Pages are a bit thicker - yeah. Have also the smaller blur hard cover. Glad I have both. Type size in the large purple is wonderful for older eyes. Different art work than the blue one so this Praise one is net new.
