I was fortunate enough to be one of Karen Karnes' students at Hunter College in the mid-seventies. At first I was not educated enough to really appreciate a ceramics department that boasted Karen Karnes, Susan Peterson, and John Mason as instructors. I was a painting major who accidently discovered Karen's wonderfull teaching techniques when I attended the class of my best friend. The following semester I signed up for Karen's ceramics class, and stayed with clay for the rest of my life. That was 40 years ago! Yikes!Karen exemplified the sharing qualities that are often associated with potters. She was an excellent advisor to handbuilders as well as wheel throwers. Patient, kind, softspoken, and oh so talented and wise, I find that I am still influenced (consciously and unconsciously) by Karen's style, forms, and excellent craftsmanship. Often, when I asked for advise by my own ceramics students I will automatically say, "I'd like to suggest..." rather than coming on like gangbusters. (I must also admit that John Mason and later, in graduate school, Doris Licht, were also true mentors.)"The Chosen Path" is a beautifuly realized tribute to one of America's living treasures. The essays are interesting and imformative, the photos are well chosen, and, in particular, Karen's stunning works are handsomely photographed and presented through out the book. I was given a copy of the book for Christmas about four years ago and then, a few months later, Karen sent me a signed copy. That one I keep home while the other is on my desk in school to share with my students. So...even today, Karen shares her talents with others though her actual work and through Mark Shapiro's excllent book. My only regret: when Karen and her partner, Ann Stannard, were invited to my wedding 37 years ago, I told Karen not to give us her pottery; knowing her, being her student, and receiving recommendations for graduate school, were more than enough. Karen complied with my wishes but still gave a lovely book about love and committment. Years later, I wish I had kept my big mouth shut. :)

I recommend this book for any person who wants to know what it would be like totrain and become a professional in the field of ceramic pottery and sculpture. Few youth get the opportunity to find out what it is really like to be a professional, talented, dedicated artist. This is something that is covered in this book. As a former high school art instructor, if I could I would give this book 10 stars. I feel it is especially suited for college age group considering a life as a professional artist.

This book has been carefully crafted to open the reader to the world of this wonderful ceramic artist. Written by people who know her and her history plus an important section by Karnes herself. Illustrations and other material of interest. This is a catalog of Karen Karnes retrospective that is traveling the country.Book arrived promptly in excellent condition.

I leafed through this book when we saw this show at the Asheville Museum of Art. A gorgeous book, from a very gorgeous show. As a whole her output surveyed makes a stunning impression: deft, confident, and somehow avoiding the inherent "craftiness" of pottery. Even when, in the seventies pieces, they look like every other piece of seventies pottery you have seen, but only twenty times better. Most amazingly, her most recent works are the best. The bluish-gray pieces with oblique tilting appendages on the sides are a seeming summary of the anthropomorphism of pottery itself. And the devastatingly beautiful ceramic chairs or seats in a group are so much greater than any "installation art" you will ever see. For once with those amazing chairs or seats all the usual talk about art evoking "loss" and "absence" has a concrete and so beautiful evocation which is palpable, seemingly (even though you can't touch) and not imaginary. Yet, are a vindication of the imagination and its link with human hands.

If you have a friend that needs a perk up from life, this is the book for them! I was so happy when I heard the laughter through the phone. I wish I had bought one for myself. The book is good quality and well constructed.

I love this author's (Marciuliano) books, and this one was no exception. If you have cats you definitely can relate to some of these, and others are just really funny. The book is small and cute, good for short reads. I read this to my mother and she commented many of them could relate to me (I'm not sure how I felt about that statement, I guess I'm cat-like). I would encourage anyone who likes cats to read it.

Adorable photos with very funny paragraphs about the cats' opinions. A great little book for a gift or just to have for any cat lover. I cracked up over many of the writings.

I think my cats help to write the e-book “You Need More Sleep: Advice from Cats.” The pictures are cute, and a lot of the sayings tend to be spot on when describing the behavior of some of my past cats. If you like cats, you will enjoy this e-book.

Julia Garstecki is an experienced teacher and author of dozens of nonfiction books for children, including Science in a Jar; Pick, Spit & Scratch; Sniff, Lick & Scratch; and Burp, Spit & Fart. Told in dual-narrative, Afterworlds, the title of this book is actually the title of the book that Darcy Patel, the protagonist is working on. Darcy, eighteen years old, has landed a two-book contract for almost a quarter million, and her life, as she knew it, changes overnight. From someone who has never lived alone, she moves from Philly to NY, and is thrown into the rigmarole of what goes into the few months leading to the big debut. It was absolutely delightful to read about everything you have always suspected being a blogger, about how the life of such a debut author would be. So I guess a part of it was wish fulfillment, to see it all on page, even if it felt slightly exaggerated and surreal – all the YA author parties, gatherings, pre-pub tours, the discussions about what makes a good book, “originality” versus writing what sells, the brainstorming during editing and rewrites and so on. Then you also have Darcy’s friends, through whom you see yourself on page too, as they are yapping on about how they have read or heard about most of the not-yet-published books because of their well-connected school librarian who always got hold of the latest ARCs.The entire book, i.e Darcy’s book “Afterworlds” is within this book. It is interspersed with Darcy’s story every alternate chapter and right off the bat you know that everything works out okay and atleast the publishing goes without a hitch, because you are practically reading the finished book within this book. But Westerfeld manages to make it interesting, especially by showing Darcy’s inexperience at pretty much everything – as an author, a lover and well, as someone terrible with her finances. Darcy can’t stick to her own schedule, is caught up with the bling of a new city and you just get a feeling that she has a “I will just wing it in the end” attitude sub-consciously. All the self-doubt about whether she was even a real author was done pretty well. At one point she wonders whether she is a fluke as she finished first draft in 30 days but she is taking months to rewrite the final chapters.I personally felt that some of the Indian rep was done well. There were so many little things – about Darcy’s parents being believers but not that religious, her sister Nisha being great at math and hence looking over the family’s tax filings, her engineer dad, her mom’s story about how they didn’t spent any money on clothes when they first came to US and got everything from India, Darcy being naïve and clueless about a lot of things in NY because she has never lived alone, screwing up the budget allocation Nisha planned for her .. and so on.. It was a good balance between atypical and stereotypical .. because hey, there is no one “true rep” and the truth is always somewhere in between. And gosh, I loved all the moments when Darcy was searching for an apartment and ended up going atleast 500$ over-budget with the final monthly rent. She pretty much tears Nisha’s financial planning to shreds, it was a bit of a trainwreck tbh - Darcy paying 3500k per month in NY without taking in any roommates and then casually blowing up money on food every eating outside frequently instead of, well, spending on setting up her kitchen so that she can cook at home. I think she finally does that (?) through her aunt gifting her some stuff and her dad driving over with some items(? I am not sure) but she continues to blow up money anyways. Nothing extravagant, but frugal or budgeted living is definitely not her cup of tea. She did give the impression of someone who knew she has a safety net of a stable loving home and a reasonably well-off family to return too if her writing career doesn’t take off as early as she expected.Darcy ends up falling in love and living with another writer with Imogen and I thought the author contrasted the difference in their personalities pretty well; some of it due to their age difference. Imogen has been in atleast one relationship more than Darcy, and also has a markedly different work style when it comes to her writing. All this sort of manifests into challenges they have get through while living together, especially with Darcy struggling to give Imogen her space and privacy. Imogen, in turn worries about how Darcy will handle Afterworlds’ success (or failure). In some ways, Imogen takes charge of their present by making some difficult decisions so that they have the promise of a better future to look forward to.I think what I struggled with the most as a reader is getting through the entire book (within the book) Afterworlds. I loved the idea TBH; Yamaraj is someone I am familiar with since I am Indian. But gosh, Yamaraj was made to be such a watered down and bland representation. Westerfeld might have as well written Twilight 2.0. Lizzie and Yamaraj’s love story was THAT kind of Hot YA commonplace. Look, I get it, the author’s intention was to show how so many stories publicized as “epic” YA romances are finally clones of one another and that so many authors have those breakthrough debuts with such stories (?). After reading Darcy’s novel, you do wonder – How on earth did THIS book get her a hundred grand in advance? The most interesting function of this book is however the conversation it generates regarding cultural appropriation. It raises questions with no definitive answers; but just further questionable topics for debate? Under what terms is “cultural appropriation” acceptable? Is there even such a thing as acceptability? Does Darcy being Indian exclude her from the criticism of getting the “essence” of her cultural history wrong when translated to paper? Considering she isn’t even that religious, can she be considered an “authentic” source of authority over the “correct” representation of Hinduism? So much of this brought up in the book, and in between Darcy is shown doubting herself. But, Darcy’s internal conflict doesn’t manifest into any real, tangible consequences.I wasn’t a huge fan of the world-building in Darcy’s book. It was a pile of confusing mess, like Inception on steroids, except that you have ghosts and your ghostly selves on different astral projections. It was hard to keep track of the different worlds (Overworld, Afterworld, Underworld) along with the permutations and combinations of time, space, visibility and travel constraints in different worlds. So yea, definitely not my kind of fantasy novel. But if is something you enjoy reading, and can get past the slightly simplistic (deliberate?)plot stretched across half the book, then I think you would definitely enjoy Westerfeld’s Afterworlds in totality.I quite enjoyed it for its unique idea. I might have liked it more if we didn’t end up getting Darcy’s entire novel and instead got snippet like say, Simon Snow’s fanfic in Fangirl, just enough to get an idea (and enough to drive discussions about appropriation). But I really all the “real” characters – be it Imogen, Nisha, Darcy or her friends. And I definitely enjoyed reading about Darcy more than Lizzie.

Though at points too brilliantly meta for me to handle, this book was incredibly well thought out and cost me far too much sleep because I had to finish it. You know those literature classes when you had to figure out what the author was thinking? Here, you know what the author was thinking. And it's superb.This book was written with two stories told in alternating chapters. The two stories could have stood well on their own separately. Darcy's tale wouldn't have been as compelling, but Lizzie's tale, the book Darcy wrote, would have still been wonderful. However, as someone who adores reading with all her being, I absolutely LOVED seeing the process Darcy went through as an author. Though I've been interning with a few agencies and have quite a feel for the industry, I think sometimes publishing is such a mysterious concept for readers and as such seeing the writing process live for a book I was reading was just so much fun! I always love to hear what authors changed and improved from their first drafts to the final copies, and seeing it as it happened was the best.I kept getting frustrated because each chapter left me wanting more and as such, I couldn't stop reading and just didn't sleep though I kept promising myself I would after one more chapter (which of course turned into two because I wanted to know what happened to the other girl!) This is really a credit to Westerfeld's writing--but then again, he's Westerfeld. What did I expect?Props for having non-binary sexualities. (I wish we lived in a world where this was a normal thing, but we don't, so many props.) Also, Darcy totally wrote her book during NaNoWriMo. Thank you, Westerfeld, for validating so many NaNoers' dreams.Darcy's story on the surface wasn't as exciting as Lizzie's--no evil forces sewing souls or anything--but it was brilliantly clever. There's a part where characters are asked which of the five parts of storytelling is most important and the answers are brilliant. There are parts where subtle fun is poked at authors and the writing process. I love how much attention she pays to respecting her religion and how she uses mythology in a way. There's a regular teenage girl who happened to write an awesome manuscript and make it, and if you're an avid reader, you've probably wanted to be there for at least a millisecond, making Darcy a fabulous character to relate to.Lizzie's story was intriguing and I loved the world that Darcy/Westerfeld built. It was easy to believe and very vivid in my mind. I would have liked to have seen more substance to Lizzie's romance, but then again, I'd be more excited to read this book in a literature class and analyse how there is little substance because Darcy hadn't experienced any romance before she wrote it. This is so meta. So brilliant.I'm going to be raving about this concept for months. And this book doesn't deserve all of the stars just for the concept, but also for how brilliantly executed this was. I'm crazily impressed by this one.

I loved Persuasion. There are so many things to learn on how to be persuasive and make people listen to you. This book will teach you everything you need to learn how to be influential and persuasive. It is a first rate Jane Austen novel. As it is written in a form of older English language some sentences require a second read for full comprehension. But all in all a very enjoyable read.I heartily recommend the reading of this book to anyone who will understand and appreciate it. In other words, anyone that is a "teenager" should be able to read this novel with delight. Guys, you may not read it with delight, but, no doubt, you still will enjoy it. And I do so recommend you read it. It is not a sappy love, as foretasted it is a wonderful analysis, story, and work of art. Yes, I think effective storytelling is a work of art.This book taught us many methods to persuade people in a positive manner, this is a very knowledgeable book and the author really did a great job. A must read highly recommended.

Exciting and powerfully written book with an array of examples depicting the methods employed to persuade your subjects to compliance.I even practiced a few of the examples given in the book and it was fun to find that this Robert character actually knows what he's talking about. I definitely recommend this book, rather your looking for a first read, if you are already a genius in this theme then I cant assure you anything, rather than if your looking to see what themes a book should have for someone who asks you to recommend their first book about persuasion of the minds, this is a really good one.

This stood out from my search for persuasion books; #1 best seller and also within my desired price range.Hahaha, I would gladly recommend this book to all those marketing salespeople. They really would need this to improve their ‘persuasion’ *performances*.Though I hate to admit, I believe I am one of those people who had persuasion confused with manipulation (I have never done either to anyone though ;) ). The first paragraph of this book opened my eyes to that fact.Personally, I don’t really understand the reciprocity part, since I buy goods with bonus offer just because they are bonus! And not because I want to reciprocate, nor have I ever felt like I should return the favor. Anyways good points. This book will certainly be fascinating for many people, since it’s pretty much revealed in here how the marketing minds work. I think the part “marketing strategies” should be added to the title as well.

This book is well written and very helpful. By the help of this book I have learned some techniques to become master of manipulation and mind control. Inside of this book the author has described about persuasion psychology and compliance management very clearly. By reading this book I have learned about the basic techniques about persuasion. Actually, I needed to learn about how to develop my persuasion skills easily and quickly, for that reason I purchased this book a few weeks ago. This book guided me about how to influence human behavior. I have also learned mind reading secrets and mind control strategies. I got my question answered from this book and I am really glad to read this book.

I love how the book was written with the techniques and how these were presented in real life situations. What caught my attention is the first part which stated the true purpose of the book which says "to persuade you need to have a common purpose". As a business course degree holder, I can agree to the methods listed relating these on how to achieve higher sales and how to effectively present your product. Not only do the techniques apply to business but to life as a whole. You need to think and strategize when and how to lure other people and not to deceive them and most importantly you need to perfectly deliver these strategies if you are aiming at a target. Perfect organization of ideas and thoughts and the book was easy to read.

It was interesting to think about and learn about some of the motivations behind actions, and how they apply. The book served as a personal insight for me to determine best influence tactics based on certain situations. I feel that the information I've gained from reading this will give me a lot more confidence and will enable me to influence a wider range of people. I think it can do the same for anyone. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who was wanting to learn communicate great ideas but communicate influential ideas.

This is an excellent book to become a master of manipulation, influence and mind control. This book is written on important things of Persuasion. Inside this book you can find the basic technique of Persuasion and how to develop these techniques, how to influence human behavior, mind reading, the persuasive power of fear and other important things which are very useful for us. All topics are helpful.

This was a fun read, it talks mainly about human behaviours and reactions. Most of us probably have done some of the things that have been mentioned in this book even if unintentionally. It was very interesting for me to think of those situations from a different perspective. And also, very important to learn other possible reactions to certain behaviours. Highly recommended.
